Allen B. Veaner, adjunct assistant professor of library science at the Graduate School of Infom1ation Resources and Library Science at
the University of Arizona, is 1the 1998 ACRL Academic/Research Librarian of the Year.
Veaner's distinguished career ii1cludes service at Harvard, Stanford, and the University pf California, Santa Barbara. His pioneering ef­forts in automation led to the establishment of RLIN. Veaner cited two proverbs as useful in guiding his career, "The more things change, the more they will never be the same" (cover of early Datamation) and "A ship in harbor is safe-but that's not what ships are built for" (Salt from my Attic by John Shedd [Portland; Main, Mosher Press, 1928]).
