This early fashion illustration was made for a commercial calendar in 1916 by artist Gordon Conway (1894--1956). Conway was a celebrated designer and illustrator acclaimed for her versatility. Her work included costume, set, and promotional designs for theatrical and film productions, posters and programs, newspaper and magazine advertising, fashion design, and parodies. This watercolor and ink illustration is part of the Theater Arts Collection in the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin. The collection contains archives that emphasize late 19th-and early 20th century American and British design. Books, photos, stage and costume designs, manuscripts, engravings, posters, playbills, and costumes are joined by materials on many forms of art and popular entertainment.
