The Special Collections Department of the Gelman Library acquires, preserves, interprets, and makes available materials and information in support of the teaching and research mission of George Washington University (GWU).
The two main areas of collecting activity are the history of Washington and the history of GWU. Washington history collections include the Charles Suddarth Kelly Photographic Collection with more than 6,000 images of the city, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority History Project, The Greater Washington Board of Trade Records, and the personal papers of D.C. political figures, journalists, and political cartoonists. Significant collections on other topicsj_riclude the 7,200 item Carnegie Peace Pamphlet Collection with items dated from 1817-1950, the Event Management and Marketing Archives, and the Ecotourism Society Collection.
