This photograph of Holling Clancy Holling's model of Paddle-to-the Sea, arranged in front of the watercolor illustration for his book of the same title (Houghton Mifflin, 1941), depicts just two of many toys, games, books, and art works from the Children's Book Collection (CBC), Department of Special Collections, UCLA Library, which were on display this spring in "Picturing Childhood: Illustrated Children's Books from University of California Collections, 1550-1990." This extensive exhibition of more than five hundred items was curated by staff of the Gmnwald Center for the Graphic A1ts, UCLA. The Children's Book Collection, established at the Department of Special Collections, UCLA Library, in the 1940s, amounts to more than 25,000 titles. The strength of the collection resides chiefly in English and American publications before 1840. However, this is augmented by moveable books and modern juvenile books. Manuscript collections supporting the CBC include the papers and drawings of Lucille and Holling Clancy Holling.
