February

Cover Page

This month’s cover features Mother and child, De Fremery Park, Oakland, CA, photographed by artist Ruth-Marion Baruch. When Baruch chose to document California’s Black Panther Party in 1968, she launched a photography project that would prove as controversial as it was popular. The now-iconic photographs she and her husband Pirkle Jones exhibited nationwide of the Panthers were both celebrated and criticized for their sympathetic portrayal of a maligned community.

Black Panthers, 1968 is one of many projects revealing the photographers’ commitment to art and social change that are preserved in their photographs and papers in Special Collections and Archives at the University of California-Santa Cruz.
