Vol 78, No 7 (2017)

Cover Page

This month’s cover features a 1912 photograph of three engineering professors at West Virginia University (WVU). While the subjects appear to be prepared for a deep sea dive, their gear is actually mine disaster recovery equipment for use in the depths of the earth. Mine engineering developed as a discipline out of WVU’s land grant mission, which included agriculture, military science, and engineering.

The image is part of the photographs collection at the WVU Libraries West Virginia and Regional History Center. WVU celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. For more information on the center’s special collections and archives, visit http://wvrhc.lib.wvu.edu.
