Ann Christe Galloway

George Frizzell, head of special collections at Western Carolina University’s Hunter Library, is the 2013 recipient of the Thornton W. Mitchell Service Award for outstanding service to the archival profession in North Carolina. Established in 2003, the award from the Society of North Carolina Archivists recognizes people who have promoted public awareness, appreciation, or support of cultural heritage institutions; preserved historical and cultural resources; provided leadership in archival organizations or associations; or taught, trained, or mentored new members of the profession. His professional career has been devoted to Hunter Library’s special collections. He joined the staff in 1982 as a research assistant and was named head of the department in 1989. The award, which honors the late Thornton W. Mitchell, who served as the North Carolina state archivist from 1973 until his retirement in 1981.

Carmelita Pickett, director of collection development operations and acquisitions services at Texas A&M University, has received the Association of Former Students Distinguished Librarianship Award. The award recognizes exceptional achievements and leadership in librarianship. Pickett has been instrumental in gaining access to countless print and electronic journals, databases, media, and print and electronic books that can be accessed and checked out by students and faculty. As a champion of diversity in collection building, she pioneered the ProQuest Comprehensive program that quadrupled the content available to users at the university libraries.


Bruce Keisling has been named associate dean and director of University of Louisville’s Ekstrom Library.

Kate Conerton has been appointed distance learning librarian at the University of Wyoming Libraries.

James Crocamo is the operations and undergraduate coordinator in the Science and Engineering Libraries at Columbia University Libraries/Information Services.

Adam Dodd has been appointed head of the web developer group at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Marie Elia has been named processing archivist in the poetry collection at the University at Buffalo-SUNY University Libraries.

Esmeralda Fisher has joined the University of Houston Libraries as director of communications.

April Grey has been appointed catalog librarian at Adelphi University Libraries.

Gary Hausman is the South Asian Studies librarian at Columbia University Libraries/Information Services.

Starr Hoffman is the journalism and digital resources librarian in the Social Sciences Division at Columbia University Libraries/Information Services.

Yolanda Hood is now head of the Curriculum Materials Center at the University of Central Florida

Rachel Isaac-Menard has been appointed reference/web services librarian at Adelphi University Libraries.

Susan Kline is a processing archivist at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University Libraries/Information Services.

Angie Lee is an educational technologist at the Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning at Columbia University.

Rosalinda Linares is now the diversity residency librarian at the University of Louisville Libraries.

Dawne Lucas is now special collections librarian at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Samantha McClellan has been appointed social sciences teaching and faculty outreach librarian at the University of Louisville Libraries.

Chuck Peters has been named head of music library cataloging at the William & Gayle Cook Music Library at Indiana University-Bloomington.

Toccara Porter has been appointed coordinator in Distance Learning Library Services at the University of Louisville Libraries.

Jason Sokoloff has been named business research and instruction librarian at the University of Washington Foster Business Library.

Azusa Tanaka has been appointed Japanese Studies librarian at the University of Washington East Asia Library.

Porcia Vaughn has accepted the position of biology and biochemistry librarian at University of Houston Libraries.

Nicholas Wyant is now social sciences librarian at Indiana University-Bloomington.


Francoise Puniello has retired from the Rutgers University Libraries in New Jersey after 44 years of service. She began her career as an audiovisual cataloger in the Rhode Island State Department of Library Services. She then took a position as a reference librarian at the Douglass Library at Rutgers and subsequently became collection development librarian, associate librarian for public services, director of the Douglass Library, associate director of the New Brunswick Libraries at Rutgers, acting director of the New Brunswick Libraries, acting associate university librarian for research and instruction services, associate university librarian for facilities development and management, and acting director of library advancement. In her role as associate university librarian for facilities development and management, Puniello orchestrated the upgrade of every library building at the university. She led efforts to create a library information commons, many smart tech seminar rooms, a multimedia resource center for the performing arts, and a full-service cafe. She served as an elected faculty member on the university’s Board of Trustees, received the Douglass Medal for her distinguished service at Rutgers’ Douglass College, and was an active member of numerous ALA committees.


William C. Highfill, 77, dean of libraries at Auburn University (1973–95), died July 10, 2013. Under Highfill’s guidance the library collection tripled in size and the Ralph Brown Draughon Library more than doubled in size through an expansion completed in 1991. He was a founding member of the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries and the Southeastern Library Network. In addition, he served in leadership roles within ALA and several other professional organizations. Prior to Auburn, he served as the director of libraries at East Texas State University.
