Welcome to the June 2013 issue of C&RL News. As we near the close of another year of committee appointments and association activities. ACRL President Steven J. Bell takes a look back at his term in office in this issue’s New Thinking for Leadership column and discusses the abundance of grassroots leadership efforts he encountered as he worked with ACRL members over the past year. Speaking of ACRL offices, complete results of the 2013 election are available on page 296.

With summer approaching, many libraries are looking at starting or completing major projects. Doug Way and Julie Garrison outline a past summer project from Grand Valley State University in their article “Developing and implementing a disapproval plan.”

Trina J. Magi and Patricia E. Mardeusz provide insight into “What students needs from reference librarians,” pointing out relevant skills, knowledge, and experience gathered through their “field notes” from individual research consultations.

Two articles in this issue examine the use of special collections and archives as tools in development and fundraising. First, Eddie Woodward uses as the work of the Florida State University Heritage Protocol as a base for excellent advice on “Building a donor base for college and university libraries.” Then Kay Wall and Eric C. Shoaf discuss Clemson University’s “Orange Glove events,” a special collections roadshow for potential donors.

In this month’s Scholarly Communication column, Scott Lapinski, Heather Piwowar, and Jason Priem take a journey “Riding the crest of the altmetrics wave” and provide tips on how librarians can integrate information about new scholarly impact measures into library instruction and outreach services.

Make sure to check out the other features and departments in this issue, including timely Internet Resources on “Marriage equality” by Martha E. Hardy and a The Way I See It essay on jazzing up library instruction sessions by Trisha Prevett.

Thanks as always for reading the News.
