Appointments

Susan Macall Allen has been named director of the California Rare Book School (CalRBS), succeeding Beverly Lynch, CalRBS’s founding director. Allen was chief librarian of the Research Library at the Getty from 1999 to 2009. It was during this period that she became involved in CalRBS, first as a member of the Advisory Committee and then as a faculty member. Between 2006 and 2010 she taught “Introduction to Special Collections Librarianship,” “Donors and Libraries,” and “History of the Book, 200–1820.” Previously she was head of the Department of Special Collections, Young Research Library, UCLA; and director of Libraries and Media Services at Kalamazoo College from 1993 to 1997. Prior to 1993, she held several posts in the libraries of the Claremont Colleges, including head of special collections. Allen was chair of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Standing Committee of the International Federation of Library Associations. She also served on the Council of the Bibliographical Society of America, the board of the American Printing History Association, and the Board of Visitors and Governors of St. John’s College. Currently she serves on the boards of the Book Club of California and the Zamorano Club of Los Angeles and on the Steering Committee of the California Preservation Program. She has spoken often and published extensively on undergraduate use of rare books and manuscripts, the future of research libraries, history of the book topics, rare book theft, and library security. She has taught regularly at Rare Book School at the University of Virginia as well as at CalRBS.

Phil Vandermeer is the new head of branch libraries at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC). In this position, Vandermeer will oversee the system’s subject-based branch libraries, and he will continue to serve in his capacity as head of UNC’s Music Library. Vandermeer has been head of the music library since 2001, and served as interim associate university librarian for collections and services from August 1, 2010 to November 30, 2010. He has been an adjunct associate professor in the UNC Department of Music since 2001 and previously held professional librarian positions at the University of Maryland in College Park and the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Tiffany Allen is now director of library human resources at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Library.

Jacqueline Bronicki has accepted the position of project coordinating librarian at the University of Michigan Library for a two-year research project sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Howard S. Carrier has joined the faculty of Valdosta State University Odum Library as reference librarian.

Leslie Farison has been named business reference and teaching librarian at the University of Louisville Libraries.

Justin Joque has accepted the spatial and numeric data librarian position in the Clark Library for Maps, Government Information, and Data Services at the University of Michigan Library.

Barbara Krupa has been named project manager for a newspaper collection project at Stanford University Libraries.

Elizabeth McCraw has been appointed special projects cataloger at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Library.

Diana Reid has joined the University of Louisville Libraries as serials/acquisitions librarian.

Theresa R. Snyder has been appointed librarian of the College at Haverford College.

Vida Vaughn is now the hospital librarian at the University of Louisville Libraries.

John Vincler has been appointed rare book research librarian at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Library.
