Earthquake recovery information
The Library of Congress provides resource pages on its Web site about emergency preparedness, response, and recovery for cultural heritage materials. The resources cover a variety of topics, including recovery from fire, flood, hurricane, mudslide, tornado, and earthquake. Although intended to support institutions in the United States, the resources may be of interest to international cultural organizations.
For general information about emergencies, go to www.loc.gov/preserv/emergprep/prepare.html, and for information about earthquake recovery, go to www.loc.gov/preserv/emergprep/earthquake.html.
Preservation Week
ALA’s first Preservation Week, “Pass It On: Saving Heritage and Memories,” will be held May 9–15, 2010. All libraries and cultural heritage institutions are encouraged to celebrate collecting and preserving our heritage. To facilitate promotion and planning, ALA has mounted a toolkit that contains program ideas, an online speakers’ bureau, examples of marketing materials, and funding suggestions. It contains links to resources in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian, and Arabic. Preservation Week is also supported by the Library of Congress and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The toolkit is available free-of-charge at www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/alcts/confevents/preswk/kit.cfm.
IIPC registry
The International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) has launched a registry of Web archives. Its purpose is to offer a single point of discovery for Web content that is preserved by an organization committed to long-term access. Each entry in the registry lists the collecting institution, start date, interface language or languages, access methods, harvesting methods, and a description of the contents. The registry began with 21 entries, but it is expected to hold more over time.
IIPC was founded in 2003 by the national libraries of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Italy, Norway, and Sweden, the British Library (UK), the Library of Congress, and the Internet Archive. Since 2006, membership has grown to 37 institutions. The consortium has four primary goals: to enable collection and preservation of a rich body of Web content, to foster development and use of common techniques and standards, to advocate for initiatives and legislation that support Web preservation, and to encourage cultural institutions to collect and preserve Web content.
