Strategic Area: Higher Education and Research

Goal Area: Learning—ACRL and its members are recognized internationally as collaborative leaders and partners in ensuring that students leave with lifelong learning skills, improving techniques for assessing learning outcomes, and in creating environments for discovery.

The ACRL Board of Directors confirmed its virtual vote of September 16–23, 2009, which approved the new composition of the Professional Development Coordinating Committee to include the following component committees: Annual Conference Programs, Midwinter Workshops and Annual Preconferences, Scholarships, President’s Program, and Virtual Institutes, and revised Professional Development Coordinating Committee charge. Goal Area: Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity—ACRL and its members are recognized internationally as authorities on the integration of content, tools, and services into the evolving workflows of scholars and creators at all stages from initial discovery, to individuals organizing their own resources, to the creation, sharing, publication, aggregation, and preservation processes, including associated intellectual property issues.

The ACRL Board of Directors directed its councilor to support the proposed statement on Traditional Cultural Expressions (should it come to a vote at ALA Council) with the acknowledgement of concerns raised by some ACRL members. A motion to endorse the proposed statement on Traditional Cultural Expressions was defeated.

The ACRL Board of Directors confirmed its virtual vote of September 16–23 2009, which approved the newly revised final version of the “Guidelines Regarding Security and Theft in Special Collections,” available on ACRL’s Web site at www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/standards/security_theft.cfm.

Goal Area: Advocacy—ACRL has greater influence on the higher education and research environment.

The ACRL Board of Directors confirmed its virtual vote of November 2–9, 2009, which approved the liaison appointment of Ann Paprocki to the American Anthropological Association for a two-year term.

Strategic Area: The Profession

Goal Area: Continuous Learning—ACRL provides continuous learning opportunities enabling members to strengthen their effectiveness and achieve recognition as valued contributors to their academic and research communities.

The ACRL Board of Directors confirmed its virtual vote of September 16–23, 2009, which approved the establishment of the Numeric and Geospatial Data Services in Academic Libraries Interest Group. The group’s statement of purpose is available at www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/about/committees/roster.cfm?committee=ACR-IGNGDSAL.

The Board approved the Immersion program coordinator selection process as outlined in ACRL Board Midwinter 2010 Document #11.1. This process is now included in the ACRL Guide to Policies and Procedures as Chapter 7.7, available online for member reference at www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/resources/policies/chapter7appointments.cfm. The Board also approved a limit of three consecutive terms for the Immersion program coordinator position.

In order to align implementation with the approved timeline, the Board extended the terms of Immersion Program faculty co-coordinators Craig Gibson and Susan Barnes Whyte through Annual Conference 2011.

The ACRL Board of Directors charged the Immersion Program (IP) Committee to:

1. amend the faculty selection process to change language from Immersion dean to Immersion coordinator;
2. modify the faculty selection committee to include a member of the ACRL Board of Directors;
3. make an open call and widely distributed announcement to the ACRL membership for applications for new IP faculty;
4. submit a report detailing the outcomes of the faculty selection process to the ACRL Board of Directors.

The ACRL Board of Directors approved Portland as the official location for the ACRL 2015 National Conference on the dates of March 25–28, 2015, pending receipt of all letters of support.

The ACRL Board of Directors approved Nashville as the official location for the ACRL 2017 National Conference on the dates of March 29–April 1, 2017, pending receipt of all letters of support.

Strategic Area: The Association

Goal Area: Membership—ACRL’s membership growth builds on retaining core membership while recruiting from new and diverse communities.

The ACRL Board of Directors approved the restructuring of the Membership Advisory Committee to include a Membership Coordinating Committee and the following four component committees: Membership Promotion, Membership Recruitment, Membership Retention, and Section Membership, and, as a pilot project, the Membership Recruitment Committee will be a virtual committee. The Membership Coordinating Committee will provide the Board a report no later than the 2011 Spring Executive Committee meeting, reviewing component committee charges and any recommended changes as well as a report assessing the pilot project of the Membership Recruitment Committee working as a virtual committee and recommending whether to continue the group as a virtual committee.

Goal Area: Organizational Vitality and Effectiveness—ACRL will have the fiscal resources, staff expertise, and organizational structure to advance the association’s strategic plan by deploying data-driven decision making to drive entrepreneurial activities.

The ACRL Board of Directors approved a change of the name of the “ACRL/DLS Haworth Press Distance Learning Librarianship Conference Sponsorship Award” to the “Routledge Distance Learning Librarianship Conference Sponsorship Award,” effective immediately.

The ACRL Board of Directors confirmed their virtual vote of August 12–19, 2009, dissolving the Assessment Skills Task Force.
