Appointments

Kitti Canepi is now director of library services for the University of Southern Nevada.

Mary F. Casserly has been appointed dean and director of libraries at the University at Albany (UA)-SUNY. Casserly joined the University at Albany Libraries in 2001 as assistant director for collections. She was subsequently promoted, expanding her leadership to include both collections and user services. Prior to joining to UA, Casserly was head of collection development at the University of Maine and at William Paterson University. Her research, presented in both articles and book chapters, focuses on collection management and scholarly communications. She has served on and chaired various ALCTS and RUSA committees and is currently a member of the Editorial Board of Library Resources and Technical Services.

Carole Ann Fabian is now director of the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library at Columbia University Libraries/Information Services.

Kathleen “Kats” Gustafson has been appointed dean of library and student learning support at the Rio Hondo College Library in Whittier, California. Previously she was at Grossmont College, a campus of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District in El Cajon, California, where she served as dean of learning and technology resources. Over her 16 years at the Grossmont College Library, she built up the library instruction program, developed and coordinated a comprehensive collection development policy, supervised the library and the learning assistance center, managed instructional technologies, and initiated and oversaw the operations of a new technology “mall” that was later combined with the library to become the Learning and Technology Resources Center.

Melissa Just has joined the University of California-San Diego Libraries as director of the biomedical library.

Patrick McCarthy has been appointed head of the social sciences and humanities library at the University of California-San Diego.

Akilah S. Nosakhere has been named director of library services at New Mexico State University Library-Carlsbad. She has 24 years of varied experience in special, academic and public libraries, and currently serves as the African American studies subject editor for Resources for College Libraries. Nosakhere formerly served as manager of the reference and research division at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History, a special library within the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System.

Elizabeth D. Orgeron is now dean of the Van Wagenen Library at SUNY Cobleskill.

J. Robert Verbesey is now executive director of the Southwest Florida Library Network in Ft. Myers.

John Weaver is the director of the Burke Theology Library at Columbia University Libraries/Information Services.

William Andersen is now digital repository assistant in the Center for Digital Research and Scholarship at Columbia University Libraries/Information Services.

Tina Chan has been appointed resident librarian in the learning commons at Syracuse University Library.

Gail P. Clement is now outreach librarian in the department of digital services and scholarly communications at Texas A&M University.

Robin Dale is now director of digital services for LYRASIS.

Nicole Dettmar is now education and assessment coordinator for the Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region, at the University of Washington-Seattle.

Joyce Garczynski has joined the Albert S. Cook Library at Towson University as the new communications and development librarian.

Erin Gordon has been appointed information technology librarian and liaison to the Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia.

Jennifer Johnson is now project archivist for the Stephen Jay Gould Papers at Stanford University Libraries.

Meredith Kahn has been appointed as Art and Architecture Research and Instruction Librarian at the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries.

Martin Kalfatovic has been appointed Assistant Director of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries’ Digital Services Division.

Yolanda Koscielski was appointed as liaison librarian for Criminology, Engineering, and Computer Science at the Simon Fraser University Library in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Wen-ying Lu has been appointed associate professor and continuing resources cataloger at the University of Colorado-Boulder Libraries, starting in January 2010.

Shane Plante was appointed as liaison librarian for Mechatronics, Computing Science, Business and Science at Simon Fraser University in Surrey, British Columbia.

Ashlinn Quinn is the Global Learning Senior Program Specialist in the Center for New Media Teaching and Learning at Columbia University Libraries/Information Services.

Shannon R. Simpson has joined the Albert S. Cook Library at Towson University for a two-year appointment as the first residency librarian.

Mary Augusta Thomas is now deputy director for the Smithsonian Institution Libraries.

Fantasia Thorne has been appointed resident librarian in the learning commons at Syracuse University Library.

Lilla Vekerdy has been named head of the special collections department at the Smithsonian Institution Libraries.

Jennifer Wertkin is reference librarian in Columbia University’s Diamond Law Library.

Retirements

Marion T. Reid, dean of the library and assistant to the president for special projects at California State University (CSU)-San Marcos, has retired after 43 years as a librarian. Since 1989, when CSU-San Marcos was founded, she led the efforts to provide library services while helping develop a campus that today has more than 9,000 students. Within ACRL, she chaired the nominations and appointments committee (1992), sat on the C&RL News Editorial Board (1996–99), and assisted in planning four national conferences. She holds the titles of librarian emerita from Louisiana State University, where she worked 21 years, and dean emerita at CSU-San Marcos.
