Appointments

Deborah Margolis, Michigan State University (MSU) Middle East Studies librarian, has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award. Margolis will conduct research in partnership with Tomorrow’s Youth Organization in Palestine, the University of Jordan Libraries American Corner, and in the Digital Scholarship Lab at MSU Libraries as part of a project to encourage youth development and create relationships among college-age youth and among professionals from different parts of the world. The goal of Margolis’s project is for students to work as participant researchers to study their own creative spaces and the creative spaces of others and, in the process, get to know one another. The study will focus on physical spaces and how to make spaces welcoming to young people of diverse identities. Though it was planned primarily as a virtual project, Margolis anticipates that her research will likely evolve due to COVID-19.

Deaths

William “Bill” Garrison, dean of the University of South Florida (USF) Libraries in Tampa (2008–15), has died. Garrison’s career in librarianship took him to Northwestern University, Stanford University, the University of Colorado, and Syracuse University. Garrison joined USF with more than 30 years of cataloging and library administrative experience, and was instrumental in creating and supporting the LGBTQ Collection in Special Collections through several donations. He oversaw the major renovations of the first and second floors of the Tampa library that allowed for increased seating and technological advancements, and laid the foundation for rich collaborations with Academic Success, Career Services, and Innovative Education. He published numerous research papers, books, and chapters, and enjoyed teaching cataloging throughout his career. He was an active member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and the IFLA team that developed the foundation for the Resource Description & Access standard. He served locally on the Tampa Bay Library Consortium Board of Directors and was a member of the Association of Southeast Research Libraries and ALA. During his service in three Association of Research Libraries (ARL) libraries, Garrison was active in ARL programs and was awarded an ARL Leadership Fellow (2004–06).
