Child Abuse and the Law: A Legal Primer for

Social Workers, by Barbara A. Caulfield and Robert M. Horowitz (61 pages, 2d ed., 1987), is a guide to the legal processes a social worker must deal with when pursuing a case of child abuse. This new edition covers recent changes in child abuse laws and legal procedures, such as the use of closed circuit televised testimony. The major elements of the legal process and court procedure are summarized pragmatically. Ten chapters cover such topics as professional ethics, personal values, academic freedom, copyright, civil rights, religious education, plagiarism, educational malpractice, admissions, science and ethics, and educational reform. Invest in the American Collection: Edited Proceedings from a Regional Forum on the Conservation of Cultural Property, edited by Jane Sennett Long (51 pages, 1988), includes the remarks of 21 speakers at a forum held June 16-18, 1987, at the Art Institute of Chicago. The speakers, who included Lynne V. Cheney (chairman of NEH), FrankHodsoll (chairmanof NEA), JamesN. Wood (director of the Art Institute of Chicago), Lawrence W. Towner (president of the Newberry Library), and museum directors, conservators, and archivists, addressed current issues in conservation and preservation. A companion piece to the proceedings is the keynote address by Librarian of Congress James H. The National Forum of Applied Educational

Research Journal, vol.l, no.l (1987-88)- , includes original articles by theoreticians, educational researchers, and practitioners on a variety of viewpoints for those who are interested in applied educational research. Edited by William Allan Kritsonis and Annette Marchand, the first issue contains articles on research assistance, teacher efficacy, group interaction, and supervisory behavior. • The Nineteenth Century,an extensive microfiche collection of significant scholarly books printed in England and the Commonwealth in the 19th century, will be issued on a subscription basis over thirty years by Chadwyck-Healey. Open Doors 1986/87, edited by Marianthi Zikopoulos(187 pages, 1987), reports on the annual census of foreign students enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities, a survey carried out by the Institute of International Education with the financial support of the U.S. Information Agency. It provides data on enrollment patterns, national origin,academic level, financial support, fields of study, and other areas of interest. • Performance Appraisal in Research Libraries,

SPEC Kit #140 (100 pages, January 1988), contains the results of an ARL survey on policies for evaluating employee performance. Peterson’s Directory of Software Sources for

Higher Education, compiled for the EDUCOM Software Initiative by Peggy Seiden (January 1988), describes the producers, reviewers, and cataloged of software used in college and university settings. Roth commercial and non-commercial sources are listed, along with vendor directories, evaluation sources, journals, and professional associations. Each software source description includes a summary of the types of software available, the machines on which the packages run, licensing terms, and price ranges. The Relationship of Library User Studies to Per-

formance Measures,by Ronald R. Powell (41 pages, January 1988), has been published as Occasional Paper number 181 by the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science. The author argues that one of the most meaningful ways to judge the quality and effectiveness of a library’s services is to measure user satisfaction. Slavic and East European Collections at the

Stanford University Libraries, by Wojciech Za- lewski (1987), has been issued as the first volume of Russian and East European Studies, sponsored by Stanford’s Committee for Russian and East European Studies. This brochure presents an evaluative assessment of Stanford’s Slavic collections, placing them in a national and Bay Area context. A list of Czech, Polish, and Russian pre-19th century imprints is appended. It is a companion piece to Za- lewski’s earlier book, Collectors and Collections of Slavica at Stanford University (1985). Standards for University Map Collections, developed by the Committee on Standards of the Special Library Association’s Geography and Map Division (13 pages, 1987), contains standards for services, collections, personnel, facilities, administration, and finance that address the specific requirements of map collections. English-language transcripts of Vremya

(Time) and I Serve the Soviet Union, two Soviet television programs, are now available on microfiche from Research Publications. Vremya is the official Soviet evening newscast with an audience of 150 million, and I Serve the Soviet Union is a weekly one-hour show featuring topics of military interest. Worldview, Inc., based in Oakdale, Iowa, is providing same-day English translation of these shows. The microfiche transcripts will be issued quarterly with an index/abstract.
