Lawrence Dowler
Lawrence Dowler,librarian of the Houghton Library at Harvard University and special assistant to the director of Houghton since 1985, has been appointed associate librarian for public ser- vices in the Harvard College Library.
Dowler joined the College Library staff in 1982 as associate librar- ian with administrative responsibilities for rare books, manuscripts and special collections and general oversight of col- lection development. As part of his new position he will oversee the im- plementation of an online catalog in the Houghton Library.
Before coming to Harvard, Dowler was acting director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and associate librarian of the Sterling Library at Yale University. He was instrumental in the planning and development of the AMC format that has become standard for machine-readable bibliographic control of manuscripts and archives, and directed the Harvard-Radcliffe Manuscript Survey and Guide Project, which covered 48 repositories.
Professionally active in research library forums and special collections concerns, Dowler serves on a number of collection and access-related committees at Harvard and elsewhere. In the summer of 1987 he conducted research at the University of Michigan in the uses and users of special collections as the recipient of a Mellon Fellowship.
Dowler is a scholar in American history who holds a Ph.D. (1974) from the University of Maryland.
JamesF. Williams II, associate director of libraries at Wayne State University, has been named director of libraries at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Williams began his career at Wayne State in 1968 and was appointed associate director in 1981. He has served as a member of the U.S delegation to the People’s Republic of China on Exchange of Biomedical Communications, Presidential appointee to the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine, delegate to the Michigan White House Conference on Libraries and Information Science, and director of the Kentucky-Ohio- Michigan Regional Medical Library Network.

AnneK. Beaubien, director of the Michigan Information Transfer Source at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, has been awarded a distinguished Alumna Award by the the School of Information and Library Studies at Michigan. Beaubien, who received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University, joined the library staff in 1971 as a reference librarian and bibliographic instructor. In 1980 she was chosen to head MITS, a fee-based information brokerage unit of the library. Beaubien has been active in ACRL, serving on the Board of Directors, as well as on the executive board of the Michigan Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. She is a member of the Michigan Online Users Group, and in 1982 was honored as “Woman of the Year” by the Ann Arbor chapter of the Business and Professional Women’s Club.
RichardM. Dougherty, director of the library at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, since 1978, will step down at the end of the academic year. Pie will maintain his appointment as professor in the School of Information and Library Studies. Before coming to Michigan, where he has been instrumental in the development of MIRLYN, a campus-wide network, Dougherty was university librarian at the University of California at Berkeley
(1972-1978). An editor of the Journal of Academic Librarianship, Dougherty is a member of the advisory board of the Library Review and is the author of numerous monographs, reports and articles. He is a member of ACRL, the Research Libraries Group, and the Association of Research Libraries.
Barbara Kile,director of the Division of Government Documents and Special Resources at Rice University, Houston, Texas, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee for Patents and Trademarks of the U.S. Department of Commerce. She will serve, with the rest of the committee, until December 17 of this year.
Anita Schiller,reference librarian/biblio- grapher at the University of California, San Diego, has been elected to the California Council for the Humanities for the term 1987-1991. Schiller is the first librarian to serve on the Council, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities dedicated to the promotion of the humanities in California life and culture. She came to UCSD in 1970 from the University of Illinois Library Research Center, and was previously visiting scholar at Rutgers University. Schiller has served as a member of the ALA Council and received the ALA Equality Award in 1975.

Retirements
Mae Benne,professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Washington, Seattle, has announced plans to retire in June. Benne specializes in children’s services.
Bette Eriskin,librarian in charge of the Labor Union Collection in the Social Science Library at the University of California, Berkeley, since 1978, retired December 18, 1987. Eriskin began her career at the library in 1955 as a secretary and held various clerical and administrative positions before earning an MLS from Berkeley in 1974.
J. Myron Jacobstein,librarian for 24 years of the Law Library at Stanford University, California, and a professor of law, retired in August 1987.
Dona Lloyd,assistant catalog librarian at North Texas State University, Denton, retired at the end of 1987 after 19 years of service.
Joseph Z. Nitecki,director of libraries at the State University of New York at Albany since 1980, has announced his retirement effective September 1988. He will continue as professor in the School of Information Science and Policy Studies. Prior to coming to Albany, Nitecki served in various administrative capacities on the Milwaukee and Oshkosh campuses of the University of Wisconsin, Temple University, Chicago State University and the University of Chicago. Nitecki has been active in ALA and has served on the University Committee of the International Federation of Library Associations. He has published extensively on the theory of librarianship, library management and technology.
Darrel Pope,assistant media librarian in the Media Library at North Texas State University, Denton, retired January 31 after 23 years of service.
Ginette Rabier,librarian in the Heffner Memorial Library at Stanford University, California, retired December 11, 1987. Rabier served at Stanford for more than 20 years, beginning in the Falconer Biology Library. She oversaw the development of the Heffner Library from a small reading room to an independent branch library serving the university’s applied physics laboratories.
Skaidrite RubEiNE,humanities cataloger at the University of California, Berkeley, retired December 31, 1987, after nearly 29 years of service. Ru- bene began working in the Catalog Department in 1959 while studying for her MLS at Berkeley, which she received in 1961. She worked in all aspects of humanities cataloging in addition to a number of special assignments that included selecting materials in her native Latvian. Rubene also served for many years as coordinator for the Catalog Information Desk.
Roberta Stevenson,head of the Conservation and Preservation Department at the University of California, Davis, will retire effective March 31. Stevenson joined the library in 1955 as a cataloger, later serving as assistant head of the Acquisitions Department (1958-1961) and assistant head of the Catalog Department (1961-1963). In 1963 she became head of the Serials Division, which became a Department in 1966. She became head of the newly-formed Conservation and Preservation Department in 1981.
Deaths
Robert H. Becker,retired special assistant to the director of the library at the University of California, Berkeley, died December 18, 1987, after a long illness. A graduate of the University of Oregon, Becker earned his MLS from Berkeley in 1951 while working in the library, where he became reference librarian specializing in Western American and Latin American holdings. In 1961 he was promoted to assistant director, and in 1970 to associate director, a position he held until 1974, when he became special assistant to the director. Becker retired in 1979. An authority on California land grants and maps, he was the author of four books on various aspects of Californiana.
Marjorie J. Benzinger,associate librarian and coordinator of the Branch Libraries of the Science and Engineering Library of the State University of New York at Buffalo, died December 21, 1987, at the age of 62. Benzinger had served earlier as senior reference librarian at the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library in New Jersey, as mathematics librarian at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and as reference and serials librarian at the Harvard Medical School Library. She was a member of Phi Lambda Sigma and the Special Libraries Association. Benzinger held a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Chicago and an MLS from Syracuse University.
Myrtle Foster,assistant circulation librarian at North Texas State University, Denton, from 1958 to 1970, died December 24, 1987. Foster held a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota (1922) and an MLS from Texas Women’s University (1955), and had worked in Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa before coming to Texas.
Richard Halvorson,user services librarian in the Library Satellites at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, died October 11, 1987, of AIDS. He was 34. Halvorson had joined the USC staff in 1986 following service at the Getty Museum and Pepperdine University. He had been chair of the Professional Development Committee at USC.
MarvinA. Miller, director of libraries emeritus at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, died November 30, 1987, at 84. Miller received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina and his MLS from Columbia University. He worked at the New York Public Library and was director of the University of New Hampshire Library before being named director at Arkansas in 1940. He retired in 1971. During his tenure Miller organized the Special Collections Division, which included an Arkansas collection and the Ozark Folklore Collection, and was instrumental in the planning and design of the new Mullins Library. Miller was active in the Southwest Library Association and other professional organizations and was a contributor to several professional journals.
Everett T. Moore,associate university librarian emeritus of the University of California, Los Angeles, died January 5 following a long illness. He was 78. Moore is perhaps best remembered as the successful plaintiff in a suit against a former California attorney general who interpreted California’s Harmful Matter Statute to mean that individual librarians could be prosecuted for distributing “harmful matter” to minors. In February 1976, the California Court of Appeals ruled in “Moore v. Younger” that California librarians were exempt from the Harmful Matter Statute. A native of Los Angeles, Moore received a bachelor’s degree from Occidental College, a master’s degree from Har-

He joined the UCLA staff in 1946 and was promoted to head of the Reference Department before becoming associate university librarian. Moore was also a lecturer in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. His Issues of Freedom in American Libraries was published by ALA in 1964 and in 1974 he received the Robert B. Downs Award for his contributions to intellectual freedom. Moore served for several years on the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee, the Publications Committee and the ALA Council. A past president of the California Library Association, Moore taught for a year at a university library school in Japan prior to his retirement at the end of 1975. ■ ■
