ALCTS offers binding institute

The Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) of the ALA will offer “New Directions in Library Binding” in Los Angeles, California, on March 1112, 1999. The institute consists of plenary sessions and small group practica, which are designed to cover the basic administrative and technical aspects of library binding.

Attendees will learn about various binding methods and how to choose among them, current and future binding standards, criteria for developing contract specifications, and options for volumes that can or should not be bound. They will also learn how simple repairs performed before binding can enhance the effectiveness of a binding program. There will be an optional tour of the Kater-Crafts Bookbinders on Saturday, March 13. Faculty include Sally Moyer (Library Binding Institute), Paul Parisi (Acme Bookbinding Company), Fritz James (Library Binding Service), Lynn Jones (University of California, Berkeley), Wesley Boomgaarden (Ohio State University), Carol Eyler (South St. Paul Public Library, Minnesota), and Tom Clareson (AMIGOS Bibliographic Service).

Registration costs $195 for ALCTS members, $245 for ALA members, or $280 for nonmembers and must be paid before February 24, 1999. The optional Kater-Crafts tour costs $35. For more information, contact Yvonne McLean, ALCTS Office, 50 East Huron St., Chicago, IL 60611-2795; phone: 1-800-545-2433, x5032; email: ymclean@ala.org; Web: http://www.ala. org/alcts/events/institutes/lbi.html.

The Systems and Procedure Exchange Center of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published SPEC kit no. 237 entitled Managing Food and Drink in ARL Libraries. Compiled by George Soete, this publication reviews some of the methods utilized by ARL libraries to balance user preferences with protection of collections. Strategies include liberalized policies, as well as user education programs.

Copies are available for $25 to ARL members or $40 to nonmembers, plus $6 for shipping and handling, from ARL Publications, Dept. 0692, Washington, D.C. 20073-0692; phone: (202) 296-2296; fax: (202) 872-0884; e-mail: pubs@ad.01g.

BookLab closes

BookLab, Inc. of Austin, Texas, ceased to do business on November 30, 1998. For ten years, BookLab offered high-quality preservation photocopying and conservation services at reasonable prices. I, and I believe many of its clients, received the news of BookLab’s closing with great regret and wish Craig Jensen, Gary Frost, and all the staff success in their new ventures.
