Frances Benham,director of media/library science education at Delta State University, has been named director of the Leonard H. Axe Library at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas, effective July 1, 1983.
Prior to coming to Delta State, Benham served as public services librarian and research assistant at Florida State University (1977-1980), library director of the University of Houston Victoria Campus (1973-1977), head of the Education Division (1972) and assistant social sciences librarian (1969-1972) at the University of Houston Library.
She holds a doctorate (1981) and an advanced MLS degree (1978) from Florida State University, an MLS from North Texas State University (1969), and a bachelor’s in secondary education from Texas Tech.
Benham has written several papers on library services for the blind and physically handicapped which are available in ERIC.
Frances Benham
Wilma Reid Cipollahas been appointed director of the Undergraduate Library at the State University of New York at Buffalo, effective February 1. She had been head of the Serials Department at SUNY-Buffalo since 1978 and head of Serial Records from 1974 to 1978.
Cipolla holds an MLS from SUNY-Buffalo (1974) and a master’s degree in music literature and piano from the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester (1952). Her research in music literature has led to several publications, including A Catalog of the Works of Arthur Foote 1853-1937 (1980) and an article on music subject headings in Library Resources and Technical Services (1974).

She serves as a member-at-large on the Executive Committee of the RTSD Serials Section and as a member of that section’s Committee on Union Lists of Serials.
Eric L. Ormsbyhas been named director of libraries at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. He succeeds Fred Peterson, director from 1977 to 1982, who is now university librarian at Illinois State University, Normal.
Since 1977 Ormsby has been curator of Near East Collections at Princeton University. He holds an MLS from Rutgers University and a master’s degree and doctorate in Near Eastern studies from Princeton.
Ann Knight Randallhas been named chief librarian of the City College of the City University of New York, effective November 1,1982. Her immediate goals for CUNY’s new North Academic Center complex include implementing a GEAC circulation system, an online catalog, and a collection assessment project.
Randall was assistant university librarian for reference and collection development at Brown University since 1977.
She holds a bachelor’s in political science from Barnard College and an MLS and doctorate from the Columbia University School of Library Service. She was a 1982 CLR Senior Fellow at UCLA, a 1982 ARL Management Consultant trainee, and a 1981-82 member of the Brown Management Development Program. She has held faculty positions in the Queens College and Brooklyn College libraries, and has taught library science courses at Columbia, Rutgers, Pratt, and the University of Rhode Island.
Randall is an ALA councilor at large. She has served as chair of ACRL’s Education and Behavioral Sciences Section (1980-81) and the North Atlantic Health Sciences Librarians Association (1979-80).

Marianna Tax Choldin.assistant director for the Slavic and East European Library at the University of Illinois, was recently awarded a visiting grant at the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, D.C. She and Maurice Friedberg, chair of the university’s Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, have organized a conference on Soviet censorship which will take place at the Institute this spring. During her sabbatical in Washington, Choldin has been appointed visiting scholar in the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress.

Richard A. Farleyretired on February 1 after 8 years as director of the National Agricultural Library, Beltsville, Maryland. Farley began his career as assistant librarian at Beloit College, Wisconsin, in 1941.
Ruth Harrod.head of interlibrary loan at Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne since 1970, retired on February 1.
Frank M. McGowan,director for acquisitions and overseas operations in the Library of Congress Processing Department, retired on December 30.
Lorraine Mathies,head of the Education and Psychology Library at the University of California, Los Angeles, since 1964, retired on December 28 after more than 31 years of service.
Sylvia Lyons Render,specialist in Afro-American history and culture in the Library of Congress Manuscript Division, retired on December 24 after more than 16 years of Federal service.
Linda Vizbaras,serials cataloger in the Serial Record Division of the Library of Congress, retired October 29 after more than 21 years of Federal service.
DEATHS
Mildred Baine Algee,professor emeritus of the School of Library Science, Memphis State University, died on January 22.
KenC. Baumann, former cataloger at the Cornell University Libraries, died on February 12. He was also founder and director of the Ithaca Opera Association.
Donald J. Lehnus,associate professor in the Graduate Library School of Library and Information Science at the University of Mississippi, died on January 8 in Lyons, Kansas.
Bess Lowry,who retired in 1964 from the University of California, Berkeley, as head of the Humanities Graduate Service, died in Berkeley on February 2.
Milada Souckova.poet, literary critic, and Czech and Slovak bibliographer in the Harvard College Library for over 25 years, died on February 1 in Cambridge. She taught at several universities including Harvard, the University of Chicago,and the University of California, Berkeley. Souckova’s publications include twelve volumes of poetry and fiction, numerous scholarly articles, and several major works of literary history.
Jens Nyholm,university librarian at Northwestern University from 1944 to 1968, died on January 27 in Santa Barbara at the age of 82. Danish by birth, Nyholm studied philosophy and comparative literature at the University of Copenhagen and library science at the Danish State Library School. He spent four years as a librarian in Aalborg before emigrating to the United States in 1927.
With a bachelor’s degree in library science from Columbia University in 1928, he moved to Washington for nine years as a cataloger at the Library of Congress. In 1934 he completed a master's degree at George Washington University in English and American literature.
Nyholm moved to Los Angeles in 1938 where he worked as head of the UCLA Library's Catalog
Jens Nyholm
Department for one year. During World War II he served as assistant librarian at the University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley he met and married Amy Wood, then working in the Catalog Department, who was a pioneer in separating the dictionary catalog into author-title sections. In 1944 Nyholm was named university librarian at Northwestern, succeeding Theodore Wesley Koch.
He published two books of poetry, Portal til Amerika (1953) and Amerikanske stemmer (1968), and wrote many articles for C&RL‚ Library Journal, Bookman’s Yearbook, Library Quarterly‚ and the Wilson Library Bulletin. He served on the editorial boards of C&RL, Libri, and the International Library Review.
Nyholm was active in the American-Scandinavian Foundation since 1927 when he received a fellowship, and he served for many years on a bibliography committee for the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study as their Danish specialist. In Chicago he was active in the Caxton Club, serving as president for two terms, and he served on the board of directors of the Center for Research Libraries from 1949 to 1965, with one term as chair in 1955-56.
After his retirement in 1968 Nyholm served as bibliographic consultant for the University of California, Santa Barbara, Library, where he helped to build a major Twentieth Century Collection. ■ ■
