Margy Kramer,library director at Hocking Technical College, has been named the 1998 recipient of the Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award. The award is given by the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) annually and recognizes a long-time ALAO member who has promoted academic libraries and librarianship, not only on his or her own campus but throughout the state, and who has provided leadership in ALAO. The award is named in memory of Jay Ladd, a former Ohio State University librarian, who was instrumental in forming ALAO. Kramer received the award in honor of her contributions to the organization and for her efforts in promoting two-year college libraries throughout Ohio.
Appointments
Samuel Demashas been appointed college li- brarian at Carleton College in Northfìeld, Minnesota. Before joining Carelton, Demas spent 20 years heading the Collection and Preservation division at Cornell University, specializing in scientific research. His article “The Internet and Collection Develop- ment: Mainstreaming Se- lection of Internet Re- sources,” with co-writers Peter McDonald and Greg Lawrence, won the 1995 Blackwell North America Scholarship Award, as well as an award from the ALA. His immediate plans at Carleton include expand- ing the selection of academic journals and bet- ter serving specific departments.
Samuel Demas
Gerald “Jerry” R. Lowellhas been appointed Kenneth and Dorothy Hill university librarian at the University of California (UC), Berkeley. Lowell was university librarian and associate vice chancellor of Academic Information Technology at UC San Diego. Prior to his five years at UC San Diego, Lowell was associate university librarian and director for Technical Services at Yale University Library (1986— 93), and chief of Cataloging Distribution for the Library of Congress (1984-86). He also served as vice-president and managing director for North America at Faxon, and head of the Serials Division Title II-C Serials Project for the University of Washington Libraries.
James W. Marcumis the now chief librarian at the College of Staten Island, CUNY. Marcum previously served as director of Library Services at the University of Texas, Permian Basin in Odessa, and Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport. Marcum’s background includes serving as a tenured professor of history at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee.
Michael J. McLanehas been appointed director of the Library at Salisbury State University in Salisbury, Maryland. He was most recently director of Libraries and Learning Resources at SUNY at Oswego, and previously served as director of the library at Herkimer County Community College and as associate librarian at LeMoyne College, both in New York State. He has been active in professional organizations including ALA and ACRL, and has served as president of the Boards of the Central New York Library Resources Council, the North Country (New York) Reference and Research Resources Council, and the Onondaga County Public Library Advisory Council.
Thomas Peischlhas been named assistant vice chancellor for Information Services and chief information officer at the University of Wisconsin, Parkside. Peischl was most recently dean of Academic Information Services at the University of Northern Michigan. His prior positions include dean of Libraries at Mankato State University and director of Libraries and Computing Service at SUNY Postdam. Peischl has been active in ACRL and LAMA, most recently serving on the ACRL Board, and chair of the Budget and Finance Committee.

Vera J. Weisskopfhas been appointed director of the James Earl Carter Library at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) in Americus. She came to GSW from Washington University in St. Louis, where she served as head of Access/Circulation Services since 1991. Weisskopf is a member of several professional organizations including ALA and the Georgia Library Association.
Connie Bakker has been appointed associate dean for Information and Instructional Services at North Seattle Community College.
Patrick Baumannis now the audiovisual and electronic media librarian at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma.
Judith Brinkhas joined the Harvard Business School as the collection development officer.
Shi Denghas been appointed catalog librarian at the University of Alabama Libraries, Tuscaloosa.

Daniel Zagerhas been appointed music librarian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Retirements
Ed Hillretired after 30 years of service as the Special Collections/Area Research Center librarian at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. Hill was instrumental in making the Special Collections/ARC into a highly regarded unit. In areas such as the photographic collection of inland river steamboats, the collection became well known, with requests coming from around the world. Hill also served as a mentor to many students who worked in his department.
Thomas L. Kilpatrick,access services librarian at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (SIUC), has retired after 34 years of service. Kilpatrick joined the SIUC Library as assistant education and psychology librarian in 1964. In 1972 he was appointed head of the Interlibrary Loan Department and he became head of Access Services in 1992. He served as president of the Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries (1991-92); he served for three years on the Illinois Library Association Executive Board; served on the Interlibrary Loan Committee of ALA’s Reference and Adult Services Division (1988-92) and chaired the subcommittee to review the National Interlibrary Loan Code (1990-94). His most recent publication is Illinois! Illinois! An Annotated Bibliography of Fiction: A Twenty Year Supplement, 1976-1996. In 1995 Kilpatrick received the Library Affairs Outstanding Faculty Member Award, and in 1998 he was named the Illinois Academic Librarian of the Year at the annual conference of the Illinois Library Association.
Sue Matson,assistant cataloging librarian at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, has retired after 20 years of service. She made significant contributions to the Illinois Library Computer Systems Organization (ILCSO) and its member libraries through her membership and leadership on various catalog maintenance committees and substantial training activities. She has conducted many training workshops and focused her efforts on creating training programs for the new DRA system. She served as the library liaison to the linguistics, foreign languages, and speech communications departments. She received the 1998 Library Affairs Outstanding Faculty Member Award.
Deaths
Robert L. Keel,retired circulation and assistant interlibrary loan librarian at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, died on October 12, 1998, in Huntsville, Alabama.
Judith D. Webster,longtime head of Acquisitions and Processing at the University of Tennessee (UT), Knoxville, died of cancer at her home December 14, 1998. Webster enjoyed a national reputation in her specialty of acquisition issues and practices within academic librarianship and had attained the rank of tenured professor. Webster began her career at UT as a nonprofessional employee in 1969 and was appointed as a member of the faculty in 1978, after completing an MLS. She prompted many initiatives during her career, including automation of the library processes for purchasing materials and accounting for them. ■
