Another school for scanning

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) will present its latest “School for Scanning: Issues of Preservation and Access for Paper-Based Collections” on June 2-4, 1999, at the Chicago Historical Society in Chicago, Illinois. The three-day conference will help managers of paper-based collections understand the appropriate applications of digital technology and the management of digital projects.

Although technical issues will be covered, the focus will not be technical training. Topics include development of institutional infrastructures to support digital initiatives, selection of content for digitization, quality control and costs, copyright and other legal issues related to digital technology, metadata, and how to maximize the utility of digital information. The 18-person faculty is comprised of nationally known experts in digital technology, such as Clifford Lynch of the Coalition for Networked Information, Paul Conway of Yale University, Jan Merrill-Oldham of Harvard University, and Franziska Frey of the Image Permanence Institute.

Registration is $265 until April 14, 1999, and $335 between April 14 and May 12, 1999. Participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging. For more information, contact Gay Tracy, NEDCC, 100 Brickstone Square, Andover, MA 01810; phone: (978) 470-1010; fax: (978) 475-6021; e-mail: tracy@nedcc.org; Web: www.nedcc.org.

NISO distributes draft standard

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has mounted on the Web a draft of its new standard, Z39.79-199X: Environmental Conditions for Exhibiting Library and Archival Materials. This standard recommends suitable exposure levels for temperature, relative humidity, light, gaseous and particulate contaminants, as well as, appropriate display methods as a means of minimizing damage to exhibited materials. It also includes lists of materials considered safe or unsafe for construction of exhibit cases and physical supports.

The draft is available at http://www.niso. org/pdfs/z3979dft.pdf.

ALCTS newsletter online

The Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) of the ALA is now publishing its bimonthly newsletter on the ALA Web site; so it is available to anyone with access to the Internet. The print version of the newsletter, which was distributed primarily to the membership, has been discontinued. This and other ALCTS publications are a source of information about Preservation and Reformatting Section (PARS) activities, particularly at the ALA midwinter and annual meetings.

The newsletter is available at http:// www.ala.org/alcts/alcts_news/.
