Sheila Creth

Profiles

Sheila Creth, former assistant director for ad- ministrative services at the University of Michigan, has been named university librarian at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

Creth joined the staff at Michigan in 1982 with primary responsibility for budget, personnel, planning and building facilities. From 1975 to 1984 she was assistant director for personnel at the University of Connecticut, and was staff development coordinator at Columbia University (1973-1975) after serving as assistant to the director at the Columbia University Center for Computing Activities (1967-1973). She holds a bachelor’s degree from Columbia and a master’s from the University of Connecticut.

Creth’s recent publications include a book, Ef– fective On-The-Job Training: Developing Library Human Resources, newly published by ALA. She is co-editor of Personnel Administration in Libraries, and has written numerous articles for such publications as Advances in Librarianship, Southeastern Librarian, College & Research Libraries, Drexel Library Quarterly, Library Journal, and the Journal of Academic Librarianship, as well as chapters in other books. She has served on the JAL editorial board for the past five years. Active in several professional associations, Creth has received two research grants from the Council on Library Re- sources, and in 1985 was one of 15 administrators selected to participate in the UCLA Senior Fellows Program sponsored by CLR. In addition to ACRL, for which she has taught continuing education courses, she is a member of the Library Adminis- tration and Management Association and the Li- brary and Information Technology Association, and is a frequent speaker at library conferences.

Paul Fasana

Paul Fasana, associate director for preparation services at the New York Public Library since 1971, has been appointed Andrew W. Mellon Director of Research Libraries. Fasana had most recently served as acting director of the NYPL.

In his new capacity, Fasana will have overall responsibility for the management and administration of NYPL’s four research libraries, including public service, collection development, cataloging and conservation, fiscal planning and related functions. He was responsible for the establishment of a comprehensive Conservation Division at the Library, which now preserves nearly 70,000 items a year, and was active in the formation of the Research Libraries Group. Fasana has been involved in the publication of an 800- volume book catalog that has replaced the ten million cards in the old card catalog, and in designing an online cataloging system that supplements the retrospective book catalog. He has published more than thirty books and articles and has lectured at several schools. A recipient of the Award of Merit from the New York Technical Services Librarians, Fasana is active in ALA, in which he served as pres- ident of the Resources and Technical Services Divi- sion (1976-1977), and several other professional as- sociations including the American Society for Information Sciences and the American National Standards Institute.

Fasana holds a bachelor’s degree (1959) and an MLS (1960) from the University of California at Berkeley. He began his career at NYPL in 1960 as a reference librarian at the Fordham Branch in the Bronx, working later at Itek Corporation and then as assistant coordinator of cataloging and later as- sistant director of library automation at Columbia University (1964-1971). From 1968 to 1971 he was also secretary to the Planning Council of the Coop- erative Library Systems Development (CLSI).

ThomasW. Leonhardt

Thomas W. Leonhardt has been named dean of libraries at the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California. He was formerly assistant university librarian for technical services at the University of Oregon, where he has served since 1982.

Leonhardt received bachelor’s (1970) and MLS (1973) degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. He began his career as gifts and exchange librarian at Stanford University, and later held positions as head of acquisitions at Boise State University and Duke University.

An active member of ALA, Leonhardt currently serves on the publications committees of the Resources and Technical Services Division and the Library and Information Technology Association, and is on RTSD’s Membership Committee and Board of Directors. He is editor of the R TSD Newsletter and serves on the editorial board of Information Technology and Libraries and Library Acquisitions: Practice and Theory. Leonhardt is the author of numerous articles and speeches on acquisitions and collection development.

People in the News

Margaret Harbaugh, assistant librarian at McLennan Community College, Waco, Texas, was elected vice president of the Texas Junior College Teachers Association on February 20 at the organization’s annual meeting in Houston. Harbaugh was treasurer of the organization, the second largest of two-year college educators, in 1985-86, and is secretary this year. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston, an MLS from the University of Texas, and is a doctoral candidate at North Texas State University. Harbaugh is also active in the Texas Library Association.

William P. Timlake, director of technical programs at the Systems Group of IBM, has been named president of the Research Libraries Group, Stanford, California. A research specialist in numerical mathematics, Timlake was involved with the establishment of BITNET, was a trustee of EDUCOM, and has been responsible for the shared university research program for the Systems and Technology Groups during a 27-year career with the corporation.

Alan K. Virta of the Special Materials Cataloging Division of the Library of Congress has been selected for a fellowship in archival administration sponsored by the National Archives and Records Administration and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Virta will study archival administration at the McCain Library and Archives of the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg.

Education Subcommittee. Other witnesses at the hearing included National Endowment for the Humanities Chair Lynne Cheney, Librarian of Congress Daniel Boorstin, New York Public Library President Vartan Gregorian, New York Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Education Carole Huxley, and Council on Library Resources President Warren J. Haas.

Florence Agreement. In addition, ALA filed a statement in support of implementation of the Nairobi Protocol to the Florence Agreement on the Importation of Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Materials. The Protocol extends duty–free treatment to audio, visual and microform materials.

COGI Newsletter. The first issue of the COALITION ON GOVERNMENT INFORMATION NEWSLETTER was published in January. Planned as a quarterly, the newsletter will include articles and news items contributed by members and compiled by the ALA Washington Office. Individual subscriptions to the newsletter are $10 prepaid to the ALA Washington Office, 110 Maryland Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20002. The coalition developed as a result of an ALA Council resolution; it serves as a clearinghouse for 30 member-organizations united in their concern about citizens’ rights to be well informed about the activities of their federal government. Nancy Kranich of New York University Libraries chairs the coalition steering committee.

Retirements

Greg Bullard, associate university librarian for technical and automated services at Syracuse University, New York, retired December 31, 1986, after 12 years of service. Prior to coming to Syracuse, Bullard was assistant director for technical services at the State University of New York at Binghamton (1960-1974). From 1954 to 1960 he was acquisi- tions librarian at that institution, then known as Harpur College. Bullard earned a bachelor’s de- gree from Champlain College and an MLS from Syracuse University.

Robert A. Colby, professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Queens College, New York, retired February 1.

Jack W. Dickey, head of the Biology Library at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, retired Decem- ber 31,1986, following 25 years of service. A native of Oklahoma, Dickey received a bachelor of sci- ence degree, a master’s degree in education, and an MLS from the University of Oklahoma, and worked as an assistant reference librarian at Okla- homa State University. He was assistant acquisi- tions librarian at New Mexico University before be- coming a reference librarian in the Main Library at Iowa. Dickey became librarian of the then- combined Mathematics-Physics Library in 1962, and later also assumed responsibility for the Zool- ogy Library (now part of the Biology Library).

Mary Louise Gladish, biomedical research ser- vices librarian at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, retired January 31, following a five-year disability leave. She had joined the staff in 1964.

Warren S. Owens, dean of library services at the University of Idaho, has announced his retirement effective May 15. Prior to coming to Idaho, Owens served as director of libraries at Temple University (1961-1968). He earned his MLS from the Univer- sity of Michigan and worked there in various ad- ministrative positions from 1952 to 1961.

Barbara Rollock

Barbara Rollock, coordinator of children’s ser- vices at the New York Public Library since 1974, retired at the end of February after more than 30 years of service.

Rollock, who provided the initial leadership in the planning and formation of the NYPL’s Early Childhood Resource and Information Center, has been responsible for managing all services provided for children throughout the 81 branches of the NYPL system. An active member of ALA, she was president of the Association for Library

Service to Children, and is also active in the New York Library Association, whose children’s division she has headed. A frequent lecturer on children’s literature, she is also the author and editor of numerous articles and publications, including three recent editions of The Black Experience in Children's Literature. For nearly a decade she was the moderator of WNYC Radio’s weekly show, “World of Children’s Literature,” for which she received the International Reading Association’s Media Award in 1982.

Rollock joined NYPL in 1945, serving first as a clerk at the Aguilar Branch Library in Harlem, and then later at other branches as a children’s librarian. In 1965 she was named Bronx Borough Children’s Specialist and became assistant coordinator of Children’s Services in 1971. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College and an MLS from Columbia University.

Vera Carlson Snapko, acquisitions librarian at the University of Minnesota Law Library, Minneapolis, retired September 30, 1986. Snapko began her law library career in 1950 as a cataloger and later became documents librarian.

Deaths

HELEN Eaton, former librarian at Southeastern Massachusetts University, died October 1986 in Somerset, Massachusetts. Eaton had retired in 1972. She was on the staff of the Central Library of Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1946 to 1953 and later was librarian at the former Bradford Durfey Technical College.

Albert L. Remley, director of advertising and promotion at the H. W. Wilson Company from 1963 until his retirement in 1980, died January 31 in Nyack, New York. A 1938 graduate of Hiram College, Remley received a bachelor’s in library science from the University of Illinois and worked in the Government Documents Division of Northwestern University until 1941. After serving in the U.S. Army for five years he joined the printing firm of R. R. Donnelly and Sons in 1946 as special librarian. Remley served as advertising and business manager for the ALA Bulletin from 1952 to 1958, and was also exhibits manager. He later joined the Combined Book Exhibit in New York.
