Heike Kordish,assistant university librarian for planning and financial services at Columbia University, has been named deputy director of The Research Libraries of the New York Public Library. Kordish will share responsibilities for planning, administrating, and managing operations within the institution’s four research libraries, which have a total non-circulating collection of more than 31,000,000 items.
Kordish’s previous positions at Columbia provided her with extensive experience in system planning for technical services and special automated databases.
After attending Goethe Universität in Frankfurt am Main, West Germany, Kordish earned a bachelor’s degree in comparative literature from City College of New York. She holds an MLS from Columbia and an MBA from the Columbia Graduate
Connie Kearns McCarthy,assistant university librarian for collections at George Washington University since 1984, has been appointed assistant university librarian for collection management at Duke University,
Durham, North Caro- lina, effective October 1, 1987.
On the staff at George Washington since 1973,
McCarthy served as act- ing university librarian, collection management coordinator, head of ac- quisitions, and special collections eataloger.
She was formerly a cata- loger at the Folger Shakespeare Library.
McCarthy has served as chair of the ALA Resources and Technical Services Division’s Collection Management and Development Committee (1982-1984) and as chair of its Resources Section (1985-1986). She holds an MLS from the Catholic University of America and has been an adjunct faculty member there for the past two years. McCarthy currently serves on the editorial board of Choice.

Susan Crawford,professor and director of the Washington University School of Medicine Library, St. Louis, Missouri, has been named distinguished alumna for 1987 by the University of Toronto Faculty of Library and Information Science. Crawford was cited for contributions in the areas of research, publications and service. She has authored or edited more than 100 publications and served on or chaired more than 40 regional or national committees and offices. Crawford is a member of Sigma Xi, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, current editor of the Bulletin of the American Medical Library Association, and a former member of the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine.
MarthaP. Lawry has been honored posthumously by the Academic Library Association of Ohio as Ohio Academic Librarian of the Year for 1987. Lawry, who died in December 1986, was a longtime member of ALAO and had served on the organization’s board. She had been head of the Women’s Studies Library at Ohio State University and, earlier, head of the Catalog Department. Lawry also served on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Library Foundation and was a member of several national honor societies.
Hwa-Wei Lee,director of libraries at Ohio University, Athens, has been honored by the Ohio Library Association as Ohio Librarian of the Year. Lee came to Ohio University in 1978 and has overseen the automation of the library and organized librarian exchanges with countries in Europe and Asia. He is a member of numerous library and information associations and is an internationally known lecturer and consultant.
JohnG. Lorenz, retired deputy librarian of Congress and executive director of the Association of Research Libraries, has been appointed acting executive director of the Washington Library Consortium until a permanent executive director can be found.

Retirements
Mary Lou Harkness
Mary Lou Harkness,director of libraries at the University of South Florida, Tampa, for the past 20 years, retired October 16, 1987. Harkness was a charter faculty member of the University, hav- ing been appointed cat- alog librarian in 1958.
Harkness holds a bachelor’s degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University, an ABLS from the University of Michigan, and an MLS from Columbia Univer- sity. Prior to coming to the University of South Florida she held posi- tions at the University of Michigan Law Library,
California State Polytechnic University, and Georgia Institute of Technology.
A member of the advisory board of the Florida Center for Library Automation since 1985, Harkness has also served on the board of directors of the Southeastern Library Network (1977-1980) and the OCLC Users’ Council (1983-1985). She is a life member of ALA and has served on several committees of the Florida and Southeastern Library Associations.
Following a year’s leave of absence Harkness plans to return to the USF library staff.
Dale Hutchinson,senior copyright acquisitions librarian in the Acquisitions Section of the Deposits and Acquisitions Division of the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., has retired after 37 years of federal service, including four years in the Navy. Hutchinson joined the Copyright Office in 1949 as a messenger in the Custodial Section of the former Service Division. In 1951 he was an accounting clerk in the Accounting Section before serving on a destroyer in the Pacific. Upon his return Hutchinson was reassigned to to the Receiving Section as a schedule clerk. He was promoted to master indexer in 1958 and to assistant to the supervisor in 1959. After a transfer and a promotion to the Compliance Section in 1961, he was promoted to senior searcher in 1969 and to copyright specialist in 1970. After the Copyright Office was reorganized in 1977, Hutchinson was reassigned as copyright acquisitions librarian, Acquisitons Section, in 1978, and was promoted the following year to senior acquisitions librarian. He received awards in 197.5, 1976, 1981, and 1985.
Benjamin Jacobson,assistant university librarian for administrative services at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, retired effective January 1.
Mary Agnes Sepanik,associate director of public services at the University of South Florida, Tampa, since 1974, retires this month. Sepanik joined the library in 1969 as a reference librarian after serving as a school librarian in Illinois and as cataloger/acquisitions librarian at Miami Dade County Community College. She holds an MLS from Rosary College.
AlmaD. Steading, assistant library director for technical services at Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina, has retired.
Deaths
HowardW. Cordell, founding director of libraries at Florida International University, Mi- ami, from 1970 to 1980, died October 21, 1987, at his home in Gainesville. Cordell had also served as government documents librarian on the North Miami Campus of FIU until his retirement in 1986. He had served previously as director of libraries at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and on the staffs of the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, Florida Atlantic University, and Western Illinois University. Cordell served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean War.
J. Mitchell Reames,retired director of the Francis Marion College Library, Florence, South Carolina, died August 28, 1987.
Anna Komon Waterman,retired head of the Serials Preservation Section of the Library of Congress, died July 30,1987, at 84. A native of Vienna, Waterman lived in Prague, Budapest, and Berlin before coming to the United States in 1939. First employed by the Red Cross, she joined the Library in the early 1940s, working in the Card Division before transferring to the Binding Division Office. Waterman also translated European and Slavic language documents for the Federal Research Division of the Library. ■ ■
