AdeleS. Dendy,former director of libraries at Hampton University (see C&RL News‚ November 1986), has been named director of libraries at Prairie View A&M Univer- sity, Texas, effective No- vember 1, 1987.
Dendy received her bachelor’s degree in ele- mentary education from Temple University (1963), an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh (1971), and a master’s (1981) and doctorate (1985) in higher educa- tion administration from Indiana University. She has been an elementary and high school librarian, and served later as media librarian and head of the Media/Reserve Service at Indiana before becom- ing head of the Fducation Library
Adele S. Dendy
A member of ACRL, Dendy has served on the Appointments and Nominations Committee and the Audiovisual Committee, as chair of the Education and Behavioral Sciences Section (1985-1986), and on the EBSS Curriculum Committee and the EBSS Problems of Access and Control of Educational Materials Committee (as chair). She is also a member of the Reference and Adult Services Division and the Library Information Technology Association, and has served on the LITA Membership Committee.
Dendy is a member of the ALA Black Caucus and has served on the ALA President’s Commission on Library Services to Minorities.
Norma J. Hervey,associate professor and head of technical services at Gustavus Adolphus College since 1981, has been named head librarian at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, effective in September. Hervey replaces Leigh Jordahl, who will return to teaching religion and classics.
Formerly associate librarian at the University of Arkansas, Hervey became catalog librarian and later head of technical services at St. Bonaventure University. She was subsequently acquisitions librarian at the University of Akron.
Hervey holds an MLS from the State University of New York (1972) and a master’s degree in history from St. Bonaventure (1980), and is currently at work on a doctorate in history at the University of Minnesota. She is a member of ACRL and other professional organizations, and has received several awards and grants.
Ralph W. Holibaugh,associate university librarian at Rice University, has been named director of libraries at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, effective July 1. Holibaugh received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati, where he studied aeronautical engineering and psychology; a master’s in music history from Kent State University, where he also pursued doctoral studies; and an MLS from the University of Illinois (1975). He has been at Rice since 1975.
Harry Hoselhas been appointed assistant dean for public services at the University of the Pacific, Stockton, California.
Hosel comes to UOP from the Office of the President of the Univer- sity of California, where he served as administra- tive analyst in library plans and policies. Prior to that he was head of general reference at the University of Missouri. Hosel has held other professional positions in the UC system and at Grinnell College.
He holds master’s de- grees in library science and the history of religion, both from the Univer- sity of Iowa, and is presently a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Library and Information Studies at UC-Berkeley. His dissertation is entitled Faculty Status—The Relationship of Role Stress and Job Satisfaction Among Academic Librarians.
Harry Hosel
Jean Kindlenhas been named executive assistant to the associate provost and director of university libraries at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As executive assistant for external and developmental relations in the Pittsburgh Library System, Kindlen will assume responsibility for public affairs activities, including public relations, external publicity, continuing education, special events such as conferences and colloquia, development and fund-raising projects, publications, and monitoring legislative and public policy activities which affect research libraries in higher education.
Kindlen was formerly director of library and media services at Pitt’s School of Library and Media Services. She has also been head of serials and cataloger in the Falk Library of the Health Professions. A graduate of Duquesne University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, Kindlen holds a master’s degree in education and an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh.
Kindlen is past president of the Pennsylvania Library Association, and has also served as first and second vice-president and annual conference chairperson. She has also been active in local library organizations and has served on numerous professional and library-related committees.
Judith Sessions,university librarian at Chico State University since 1984, has been named dean and university librarian at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, effective March 1.
Sessions was previ- ously planning and sys- tems librarian at George Washington University (1981-1982), and later assistant university li- brarian for administra- tive services and acting head of technical services.
An ACRL member, Sessions serves as an ALA councilor-at-large and on the Intellectual
Freedom Committee; she also holds membership in the Library and Information Technology Associ- ation and the Library Administration and Man- agement Association, and is active in the Intellec- tual Freedom Round Table. She is president of the Freedom to Read Foundation, president of the North State Chapter of the California Library As- sociation, vice-president/president-elect of the California Institute of Libraries and a member of the editorial board for Library Hi Tech, published by Pierian Press.
Judith Sessions
Sessions received a bachelor’s degree cum laude in British and American literature from Central Florida University in 1970 and an MLS from Florida State University in 1971. She is a member of the Beta Phi Mu honor society and has received several honors and a grant, and was appointed a member and lecturer of the U.S./China Library Exchange Delegation in 1980. Sessions has also been a consultant in library automation and has authored numerous articles and presentations.
Abigail Studdiford,executive director of the New Jersey Library Association since 1981, has been named library director at Middlesex County
College, Edison, New Jersey.
Studdiford served as associate university li- brarian at Princeton University for five years and, earlier, as univer- sity librarian at the Uni- versity of California, Riverside, for five years. She has also been acqui- sitions librarian at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and circulation librarian at the Univer- sity of South Carolina.
Abigail Studdiford
Currently completing a doctorate in library science at Rutgers University, where she is examining how public policy issues affect major research libraries, Studdiford holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina and an MLS from the University of North Carolina. She is the author of numerous professional articles on topics includ- ing censorship and collection development.
Duane Webster,deputy executive director of the Association of Research Libraries, Washing- ton, D.C., and Director of the Office of Management Studies, has been named ARL executive director. Webster had served as interim direc- tor since November 1 of last year.
Webster received his MLS from the Univer- sity of Michigan in 1964 and worked in a variety of libraries before join- ing ARL in 1970 to es- tablish the Office of Management Studies. During his tenure, he has designed a number of programs to enhance and improve the manage- ment and services of research libraries, including study processes to assess public services, manage- ment systems, collections, and preservation activi- ties; and developed a series of institutes on research libraries for library school faculty. Webster has consulted in nearly 100 libraries, provided man- agement training to more than 5,000 libraries, and has written widely on the topic of organizational development and performance improvement for li- braries.
Among other honors, Webster was named ACRL Academic and Research Librarian of the Year for 1987.

Retirements
LeoE. Anderson,senior descriptive cataloger in the English Language Section 1 of the Descriptive Cataloging Section at the Library of Congress, retired December 31 of last year. He had worked more than 17 years in the Library and 27 years in federal service. Anderson was born in Ireland and raised in Massachusetts, and received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from George Washington University. He earned an MLS from the Catholic University of America in 1970. Anderson began his federal service as a clerk-stenographer and secretary with the Office of the Quartermaster General in 1952, and worked in private industry from 1957 to 1963. Returning to government service in 1964, he worked in the U.S. Geological Survey Library before joining the Library of Congress in 1970. All of his service has been in the Descriptive Cataloging Division, where he has held positions of increasing responsibility.
Peter J. de la Garza,coordinator of the Hispanic Acquisitions Program at the Library of Congress since 1978, retired March 1. De la Garza received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Washington and joined the Library in 1959 as a special intern before becoming head of acquisitions in the Columbus Memorial Library of the Organization of American States in 1960. He returned to the Library in 1968, serving successively in the Order and Overseas Operations Divisions and as technical officer of the Processing Services Department. A life member of ALA, de la Garza has been active for many years in the Seminars on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials and the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institution Libraries.
Irving Kao,the first and only head of serials acquisitions in the Graduate Library at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, retired in January. Kao began working at Michigan 30 years ago as a student assistant in the Dentistry Library. After earning his MLS, he became a cataloger and eventually serials acquisitions librarian in 1967, when the Serials Acquisitions unit was first established within the Serials Division. Kao helped catalog the then new Undergraduate Library in 1956 and from 1957 to 1967 was one of the key serial catalogers within the Cataloging Department. In 1971, he planned and supervised the decentralization of receipt of all journals and periodical publications.
Marion McMahon,the first head of the Copy Cataloging Unit at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, retired in November 1987. McMahon, a flight instructor during World War II, joined the library in 1972 as a cataloger and was instrumental in the establishment of the Copy Cataloging Unit.
Jean Peck,head of the Catalog Department at the University of California, Berkeley, retired December 31, 1987, after more than 21 years of service. Before coming to Berkeley, Peck was a nurse for 14 years and later worked at Michigan State University (1961-1966), first as a science cataloger and then as head of the LC Section. She joined the Berkeley staff as a science cataloger and became head of the LC Cataloging Section the following year when the Catalog Department first implemented copy cataloging. In 1971 Peck was appointed head of the Monographic Cataloging Division, assuming responsibility for both original and copy cataloging and overseeing the implementation of batch cataloging and, later, online cataloging using BALLOTS (later RLIN). She was appointed acting head of the Catalog Department in 1976 and became permanent head in 1977. Under her leadership, the library implemented AACR2 in 1981, closing its card catalogs and introducing fiche catalogs. An automated catalog maintenance and authority control system was likewise introduced. Peck has also been instrumental in leading Berkeley’s contributions to the Name Authority Cooperative Project and in guiding UC participation in the National Cooperative Cataloging project. Throughout her career Peck has participated on numerous library and LAUC committees, as member and chair. She has been active in ALA and the California Library Association, serving as a member of the CLA Council during 1983-1986. Peck has also served on numerous statewide committees and on the Research Libraries Group’s BIBTECH during its formative period.
Deaths
JohnA. Brennan,curator of the Western Historical Collection and University Archives at the University of Colorado, Boulder, died January 21 at the age of 59. Brennan had been curator since 1964 and was largely responsible for the Collection’s growth and increasing importance. He attended the University of Detroit and Michigan State University, from which he received a bachelor’s degree. After serving as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Brennan earned master’s and doctoral degrees in history from Boulder. He was the author of a book, Silver and the New Deal, published by the University of Nevada Press, as well as a number of monographs and articles, and edited some 15 guides to manuscript collections. Brennan also served as reviewer or editor for the University of Oklahoma Press, Social Science Journal, Western Historical Quarterly, and other publications. An officer of the Society of Colorado Archivists, he was also a member of the Colorado History Group, the Organization of American Historians and the Western History and Western Social Science Associations.
Margaret Schindler Bryant,retired former chief of the Division of Bibliography (1947-1961) at the National Agricultural Library, Beltsville, Maryland, died December 1, 1987. Bryant had also been chief of the Reference Section (1943-1947). She was known as a founder of the Bibliography of Agriculture, which she managed from its inception in 1943 until her retirement. Bryant had been active in the League of Women Voters since leaving the Library.
Lewis C. Coffin,retired law librarian of the Library of Congress, died December 21, 1987, at 78. Coffin earned a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College and a law degree from George Washington University. Appointed to a position in the Library’s former Card Division in 1931, he remained in the Processing Department for 33 years, working successively as assistant chief or chief of three divisions and as assistant and associate director of the Department. From 1942 to 1946 Coffin served in the U.S. Navy. He was appointed law librarian and general counsel of the library in 1964, remaining in the latter position until 1970, when a separate Office of the General Counsel was created. He retired in 1971. Coffin was active in the District of Columbia, American, and Federal bar associations, the American Association of Law Libraries, and the International Association of Law Libraries, of which he was elected president in 1968.
Thelma Eaton,retired professor of library science at the University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign, died in July 1987. Eaton taught cataloging and the history of books and printing in the School of Information and Library Science from 1949 until her retirement in 1964.
Ethel B. Kellar,retired librarian of the Schaffner Library at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, died November 27, 1987, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the day before her 99th birthday. Kellar had been head of the Circulation Department in the Schaffner Library before becoming assistant librarian. Shortly thereafter she was named head librarian and remained so until her retirement in 1955.
