ANNE M. BUCK, a former director of the library network at Bellcore, has been appointed university librarian at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Buck has worked as a group supervisor and reference librarian at the Technical Library at Bell Laboratories, and was director of the Dunbar Public Library in West Virginia. She has taught at Rutgers University and at the University of Wis- consin-Madison. The au- thor of numerous publi- cations, Buck is listed in Who’s Who of American Women—1991-92, and she received the Bellcore Tribute to Women and Industry Award in 1989. She earned her bachelor’s degree in geology at Wellesley College and her MLS at the University of Kentucky.

People in the news

TERRY BIRDWHISTELL, university archivist and director of the University of Kentucky’s oral history program, has been named president of the national Oral History Association, a society of students, scholars, local historians, and other individuals concerned with the application of professional standards to the collection, preservation, dissemination, and use of oral testimony. Birdwhistell was installed as president at the association’s annual meeting in October.

MEREDITH BUTLER, director of University Libraries and dean of library faculty at the University at Albany, State University of New York, has been appointed by the New York State Board of Regents to the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries. The nine-member council advises the Regents on state policy regarding the New York State Library, libraiy development, legislation, and library aid programs.

BLAISE CRONIN, dean of the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University, Bloomington, has been elected vice-president (US A) of the Association for Information Management (AsLib), a London-based group with almost 2,000 corporate members worldwide.

SUL H. LEE, dean of University Libraries at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Lee was elected with two others at ARL’s 119th membership meeting in Washington, D.C. and will serve a three-year term.

ROBERT D. THOMAS, coordinator of the Learning Resource Center at Sauk Valley Community College, Dixon, Illinois, has been elected chairperson of Region 20 of the Illinois Education Associa- tion-NEA. He is the first IEA higher education member elected to such a position which has the dual responsibility of membership on the IEA Board of Directors. Thomas is a member of the Illinois Library Association, the American Library Trustee Association, and ALA. He is vice-chairperson of the Board of the Dixon Public Libraiy.

THOMAS SCHNEITER has been named assistant librarian and assistant head of the Access Services Department in the Main Library at Indiana University, Bloomington.

MARY LOU STARK has been named assistant head of the Braille Development Section at the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.

NANCY TRASK is the new information services librarian at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas Library.

PHYLLIS VAN ORDEN has joined the Library Science Program faculty at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.

CAROL SUE WHITEHOUSE has been appointed administrative conservator at the Newberry Library, Chicago.

Retirements

ROBERT ECKERT, librarian in the URL Acquisitions Department at the University of California- Los Angeles, has retired after more than 34 years of service.

ANTHONY HALL, librarian in the Bibliographers Group at the University of California-Los Angeles, has retired after more than 31 years of service.

RALPH JOHNSON, librarian in the URL Cataloging Department at the University of California-Los Angeles, has retired after more than 31 years of service.

MARY RYAN, librarian in the Bibliographers Group at the University of California-Los Angeles, has retired after more than 38 years of service.

BRUCE E. THOMAS, head reader services librarian for 28 years at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, retired in late December. Thomas also served as chairman of the Library Department. During his tenure the Stevenson Library moved into a new building and brought its card catalog online.

MARY ELLEN THOMAS retired in October after more than 25 years as a reference librarian with University Library Services at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond.

STANLEY YATES retired from the Iowa State University (ISU) Library on October 31, 1991. He joined ISU in 1969 as head of the newly formed Department of Special Collections. During his tenure in that role he built manuscript collections in agriculture and veterinary medicine, and established the American Archives of the Factual Film.

Deaths

DORCAS M. BISHOP, former librarian of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education who retired in 1967, died in Concord, New Hampshire, in September. Bom in 1900, Bishop began work in the Harvard Libraries in 1918 in the Widener Library Catalog Department. She transferred to the Education Library in 1922, where she was librarian until her retirement 55 years later.
