Dr. Henry Scherer,Librarian of the Krauth Memorial Library of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, has been chosen Vice-President and President-Elect by the American Theological Library Association. Results were announced at the Annual Conference of ATLA in Pittsburgh (June 22).

As Vice-President he is responsible for organizing the twentyfourth annual conference to be held in New Orleans June 1970. At that time he automatically begins a one-year term as president, responsible for chairing the Executive Committee, and for developing the program of the organization. A year term on the Executive Committee as Past produces an index to over 125 religious periodicals, administers a scholarship program for professional training, operates a placement service, collects statistics of member libraries, and seeks foundation aid for upgrading theological libraries.

The American Theological Library Associa tion is comprised of 550 libraries and librarians of member seminaries, archivists, librarians in religious historical societies and in university schools of religion. Within its membership are schools of numerous Protestant denominations

Dr. Scherer has been librarian at Krauth Memorial Library since 1960. Previously he was Assistant Librarian at Midland College for four years. The remainder of his career he has served as pastor of parishes of the Lutheran Church in the Midwest and in California for nearly thirty years.

In ATLA Dr. Scherer has served on the Executive Committee and has been Chairman of the Committee on Statistics.

His education includes a Master of Science in Library Science degree, and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Southern California. He also has received a Master of Arts degree from Creighton University and the degree of Bachelor of Divinity from Central Lutheran Theological Seminary, along with a

Bachelor of Arts degree from Midland College

He is also active in tie American Library

Association and the Lutheran Historical Conference. He is a charter member of the latter and headed its Committee on Microfilm for several years. Presently he chairs the Southeastern

Pennsylvania Theological Librarians group, an

APPOINTMENTS

LindaK. Angold, a 1968-69 trainee at Wayne State University Medical Library, has been appointed to the reference staff of the Pacific Southwest Regional Medical Library Service at the UCLA biomedical library.

Merle Boylanhas been appointed associate director for technical services, University of Massachusetts library. Mr. Boylan has been chief of the library branch, Technical Information Division of NASA’s Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California.

Mrs. Nancy Coverthas been appointed assistant to the university librarian for systems, Kresge Library, Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan.

CharlesJ. Edwards is the new acquisitions librarian at Southern Oregon College, Ashland, Oregon.

ElizabethA. Elkins has been appointed assistant reference librarian, Milne Library, State University of New York College at Geneseo.

Fay Flesiahas been appointed assistant librarian for the Waukesha campus library of the University of Wisconsin.

HarryR. Gates has been appointed serials librarian at Southern Oregon College, Ashland, Oregon.

NelsonJ. Gilman of the UCLA biomedical library was appointed associate director of the Pacific Southwest Regional Medical Library Service.

RobertG. Gray has been appointed documents librarian at Southern Oregon College, Ashland, Oregon.

JamesD. Hart, professor of English on the Berkeley campus of the University of California, has been named director of the Bancroft Library.

Mrs. MaryB. Haskell has joined the staff of the University library, The George Washington University, as serials librarian.

IvanL. Kaldor has been appointed interim dean of the library school at the State University College of Arts and Science at Geneseo, New York.

John Kendallhas joined the bibliography division of the University of Massachusetts library. His special field of responsibility will be English and American studies. Mr. Kendall has been head of the book selection division of the Harvard College library.

Lawrence Kieffer,formerly assistant director for social sciences, University of Nebraska libraries, is now head of the Reader Service Department, University of Northern Iowa library, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Jackson Lethbridgehas assumed the position of senior assistant librarian with the responsibility for the acquisitions program of the Commonwealth Campuses Libraries, Pennsylvania State University.

ErnestV. Liddle, formerly head librarian of Seattle Pacific College, Seattle, Washington, is now acquisitions librarian and bibliographer, Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois, with the rank of associate professor.

George McDonough,formerly a member of the faculty of the school of librarianship, University of Washington, has been appointed director of learning resources and editor of the Journal of the Institute of Research, Seattle Pacific College, Seattle, Washington. He holds the rank of associate professor.

Mrs. PhyllisS. Mirsky, formerly of the UCLA biomedical library reference staff, has been appointed head of the Consulting and Continuing Education Section of the Pacific Southwest Regional Medical Library Service.

MinaB. Pease has joined the staff of the Pennsylvania State University library as senior assistant librarian in charge of the Government Document collection in the reference department of the Pattee Library.

RichardC. Quick, director of libraries, State University College of Arts and Science at Geneseo, New York, has been named chairman of the Committee on Community Use of Academic Libraries of the American Library Association’s Association of College and Research Libraries.

Helen Strickland,formerly oceanography librarian and head of the science reading room, University of Washington, Seattle, is now associate professor of librarianship and associate director of learning resources, Seattle Pacific College, Seattle, Washington.

Seymour Weinsteinhas joined the staff of Trenton State College as assistant librarian for reader’s services.

MelvinE. Westerman has assumed the position of assistant librarian in the reference department of Pennsylvania State University library.

Mrs. Sally Fay Williamshas joined the Drexel Institute of Technology library as business administration librarian in the reference department.

Mrs. Carol Ann Wrighthas been appointed assistant librarian in the undergraduate libraries at Pennsylvania State University.

Muriel Zeldishas joined the staff of the Houston Academy of Medicine library for the Texas Medical Center. She holds the position of head of the catalog department. Miss Zeldis was formerly with the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

RETIREMENTS

GerrittE. Fielstra, chief of the New York Public Library’s Photographic Service, retired August 30, 1969.

MaryA. Funk, for thirty years assistant librarian at Muhlenberg College, retired August 31, 1969.
