Douglas W. Bryant
In announcing the appointment, President Derek Bok praised Bryant for his “invaluable contribution” in maintaining “the quality of our library system by providing effective leadership at a time of rapid change and severe financial pressure. We are all greatly in his debt.”
Douglas Bryant joined the university library system in 1952 as administrative assistant librarian, following two and a half years as attache in the American Embassy in London as director of libraries in the U.S. Information Service. He became university librarian in 1964 and library director and professor of bibliography in 1972. Under his supervision, the university library (consisting of roughly 100 subdivisions) grew from 7.25 million volumes in 1964 to nearly 10 million volumes, comprising the world’s largest university library.
Author of several articles on the role of libraries in modern research, Bryant belongs to five professional associations, including the Massachusetts Historical Society, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a past president of the Association of Research Libraries (1969) and has also worked extensively in international library affairs. After studies at the University of Munich (1932-33), he earned his A.B. from Stanford in 1935 and his A.M.L.S. from the University of Michigan in 1938.
Oscar Handlin has taught at Harvard since 1939 and has held the Pforzheimer Chair since 1972. A Pulitzer Prize-winning author (The Uprooted, 1951), he has written and edited widely in American history and education and the social dynamics of immigration. He has received two other prizes for his books: the 1941 Dunning Prize of the American Historical Association for Bostons Immigrants and the 1958 Christopher Award for Al Smith and His America.
A past director of the Harvard University Press, Handlin serves on the Board of Trustees of the New York Public Library. He is a native New Yorker who graduated from Brooklyn College in 1934 and received his A.M. (1935) and Ph.D. (1940) degrees from Harvard. Seven institutions have conferred honorary degrees upon him since 1962.
Maria Grossmann, librarian for collection development in the Harvard University Library since 1974, has been appointed librarian of the Andover-Harvard Theological Library and member of the Faculty of Divinity, effective February 1, 1979.
A graduate of Smith College with a master’s degree from Radcliffe and a Ph.D. in history from Harvard, Grossmann also holds a library degree from Simmons College. She went to Harvard in 1956 as acquisitions librarian at the Andover- Harvard Theological Library; from 1961 to 1965 she was assistant librarian for cataloging at Andover-Harvard; and in 1965 she became librarian of the library, a post she held until 1973.
Grossmann has published many articles and book reviews on theological librarianship and on German scholarship in the sixteenth century, her special area of interest. Her book, Humanism in Wittenberg, 1486-1517, was published by De Graaf, Nieuwkoop, Holland, in the series Bib- liotheca Humanistica et Reformatorica.

On its first publication in 1967, Anglo-American Cata- loguing Rules was greeted as “the best Code we have, or are likely to have,” and was soon adopted by libraries around the world.
The second edition of AACR consolidates the achievements of the first and builds on them to meet the challenges of development and change. In an intensive three-year project, two distinguished editors and an international Joint Steering Committee—on which the national library associations and national library services of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom were all represented—have produced a revision that harmonizes the two differing texts of the first edition. AACR 2 incorporates the latest international standards, makes provision for the whole range of new materials and media now in our library collections, and takes notice of the impact of machine- readable cataloguing and bibliographic systems. There are adjustments to the text and presentation that nation-wide reviews by AACR users have shown to be essential.
One innovation is of particular importance: the rules for Description are presented in an integrated structure that provides a uniform basis for recording not only every known category of print and nonprint material, but those still unknown and uninvented.
AACR 2can be the Code to take cataloguing into the twenty-first century.
