Rare Books and Manuscripts Preconference

The Twenty-Sixth ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Preconference, “Changing Concepts of Value and Rarity,” will be held July 2-5, 1985, at the Holiday Inn–Mart Plaza, in Chicago, Illinois.

The preconference will focus on problems and issues raised by the changing concepts of value and rarity as they apply to library collections. Speakers will examine various aspects of the question of how contemporary culture has evolved its perception of what constitutes “rarity” and how society relates rarity to value.

The range of discussion will involve consideration of such questions as the historical evolution of the idea of rarity and the influence on the concept of such social and cultural factors as the development of the modern university system, the consumer society, ideas of status and prestige, and the political statements that rare book collections can make.

Scheduled speakers are: Arthur Freeman, of Bernard Quaritch, Ltd., with a retrospective view of the English market; Paul Mosher, director of research services at Stanford University Library, on aspects of collection development; Kenneth W. Rendell, manuscript dealer and appraiser, with an appraiser’s view of the market; Robert Rosenthal, curator of Special Collections at the University of Chicago, on the origins of the Chicago book world; James M. Wells, custodian emeritus of the John M. Wing Foundation on the History of Printing at the Newberry Library, on the role of exhibitions in reawakening interest in books; and Thomas Wright, William Andrews Clark Librarian at UCLA, on librarians’ curious views on their roles and their colections.

The RBMS Continuing Education Committee has also planned a variety of sessions intended to encourage preconference participation. Topics will include: design and renovation of special collection facilities; manuscript valuations and appraisals; the Tax Reform Act of 1984 and charitable contributions; RLIN implementation of the MARC archives and the MSS control format; rare book librarians as collectors; rare book reading rooms; special collections in the general collections environment; using volunteers and docents in rare book libraries; and conservation planning.

The preconference dinner will be the special Fourth of July chicken and ribs dinner dance at the University of Chicago, hosted by Robert Rosenthal. This event is included in the registration fee. All registrants are invited to the preconference opening reception sponsored by the Midwest Chapter of the American Antiquarian Booksellers Association and Northwestern University Library at the preconference hotel.

Preconference registration is limited to the first 250 applicants. The registration fee of $110 for ACRL members, $135 for non-members, should be sent in by June 3. Late registrations will be accepted on a space available basis after June 3 at an additional cost of $15 per person.

Accommodations will be at the Holiday Inn- Mart Plaza, 350 North Orleans at Wacker Drive. A housing form will be sent upon receipt of your registration.

Additional information and registration forms for the preconference may be obtained from: RBMS Preconference, ACRL/ALA, 50 E. Huron St., Chicago, IL 60611.
