Pam Spiegel

Zachary M. Baker,head li- brarian at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York, was installed as presi- dent of the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) during the asso-ciation’s annual con- ference in June. Baker has served as vice-president and president of the AJL’s Re- search and Special Libraries Division, and has been pres- ident-elect of the association since 1992. He will serve as president until June 1996.

John V. Richardson,associate professor at the University of Califor- nia, Los Angeles, School of Education and Infor- mation Studies, has been appointed editor of the Library Quarterly, and will serve a five-year term. The author of eight books and many articles and reviews, Richardson has refereed several journals including the Journal of Applied Communication Research and the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science.

Eugene B. Powerhas been honored by ALA with a memorial resolution for distinguished achievements during the course of his lifetime. Power, who founded Ann Arbor-based UMI in 1938, died in December 1993 at age 88. The resolution points to Power’s role as founder of the modem microfilming industry and his commitment to the availability of important texts. One of his crowning achievements was a project he initiated to ensure the intellectual preservation of manuscripts and public records stored in London during World War II and of all British books printed before 1640.

Robert A. Seal,university librarian at Texas Christian University, and Elizabeth Snapp, director of libraries at Texas Woman’s Universi- ty, have been elected to serve three-year terms on the AMIGOS Board of Trust- ees.

Lee Stout,librarian and uni- versity archivist at Penn State University, has been elected treasurer of the Society of Ameri- can Archivists. He began his three-year term at the Society’s annual meeting in September.

Appointments

Scott Bennett,director of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University, has been appointed librarian of Yale University. Bennett began his career as assistant professor of English at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign and went on to serve as associate professor of library administration there after earning his MLS. He then served as assistant university librarian at Northwestern University before joining Johns Hopkins in 1989. A member of the American Council of Learned Societies, Bennett served on the Association of Research Libraries’ Preservation Committee and is currently on its Information Policy Committee.

Sharon Lee Cannhas been appointed head librarian at the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing Library in Atlanta. Cann previously served as education librarian at Georgia State University. She will become president of the Atlanta Health Science Libraries Consortium in 1995.

Jeffrey Ellairhas been named library director at the University of Wisconsin Center- Sheboygan.

Kay Harvey,librarian at the Community College of Allegheny County, north and south campuses, Pittsburgh, has been named head librar- ian of Penn State’s McKeesport Campus Library and New Kensington Campus Library. Harvey has served as collection development librari- an, bibliographer and assistant acquisitions li- brarian, serials cataloger, assistant serials librar- ian, and library clerk at East Texas State University. She was honored in 1990 by the Senate of the State of Texas, Proclamation No. 1416, in recognition of community and state- wide efforts on behalf of higher education.

Margaret C. Landrum,associate dean at Everett Community College in Washington, has been appointed library director at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. Prior to joining Everett, Landrum was library director at West- ern State College and at Central Oregon Com- munity College. She is currently serving on the ACRE Membership Committee and the newly formed ACRL Intellectual Freedom Committee.

M. Stuart Lynnassumed the presidency of the Commission on Preservation and Access last July upon the retirement of Patricia Battin. Lynn has served on the Commission’s Technology Assessment Advisory Committee since 1988, and has been an active member of the Commis- sion’s Digital Preservation Consortium. He most recently served as vice-president for informa- tion technologies at Cornell University.

Myma J. McCallisterhas been named direc- tor of the Trexler Library at Muhlenberg College, Allentown. Pennsylvania. Most recently associate university li- brarian of technical ser- vices at Appalachian State University, McCal- lister has also served as acquisitions/serials cata- loging clerk at Michigan State University; acqui- sitions librarian at Albion College; and head of the collection development and acquisitions departments at the University of Maine.

Carol Resco,head of the Physical Sciences Library at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), has been named library director at the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology in Portland. Resco began her career in 1975 as head of the High Energy Physics Library at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. From there she became head of the North Engineering Library at the University of Michigan, then reference librarian at UCR.

Myma McCallister

Taylor D. Ruhlhas been appointed dean of library and information services at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Director of library services at Pacific Union College in California for the past 13 years, Ruhl has been involved in library work for over 22 years.

Basil “Bill” Sozanskyhas been named director of the University of Minnesota, Duluth (UMD), Library. Sozansky, who has been acting director since October 1993, came to UMD from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where he was head of the Serials Management Division.

Robert G. Anthony Jr.recently became the new head of the North Carolina Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Linda M. Azenhas joined the University of Southern California’s Norris Medical Library as an information specialist.

Randal Brandtis the new assistant librarian in the Water Resources Center Archives at the University of California, Berkeley.

Lara Bushallow-Wilburhas been appointed assistant librarian at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

Michael Colemanis now serials/docu- ments coordinator of the Gelman Library at George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

Madeline Coppis now collection development librarian at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California.

Nancy Dewaldrecently joined the Penn State University Libraries as reference librarian.

Karen Dillerhas been appointed reference librarian at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon.

Brian Dohertyhas been named music librarian at Stetson University, DeLand, Florida.

Joni L. Gomezis now technical services law librarian at the University of Oregon, Eugene.

D’Ann Hamiltonhas been appointed head of public service at Rockford College, Illinois.

Randall Hensleyhas been named social science reference librarian at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Irene M. Hoffmanhas been appointed assistant to the dean of library services at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Yan Hongis now assistant documents and maps librarian at the University of Vermont.

James Krikelashas been named interim director of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Lois Kuyper-Rushingis the new music librarian at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.

Cheryl LaGuardiahas been named coordinator of the new Electronic Teaching Center at Harvard University.

Suping Luhas joined the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries as a reference/liaison librarian.

Suzanne McMahonis now head of the South/Southeast Asia Library Service and librarian for the South Asian collections at the University of California, Berkeley.

Ichiko Moritais now the first director of the Library of Congress Japan Documentation Center, Washington, D.C.

Frances O’Brien Painterhas been appointed deputy university librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Robin Paynteris now reference librarian/ area studies specialist at the University of Oregon, Eugene.

Robert E. Pillowhas been named media resource services librarian at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond.

Ilene Rocknianrecently became associate dean of library services at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Virginia Shihjoined the University of California, Berkeley, as librarian for the Southeast Asian collections.

Peter Shipmanhas been appointed circu- lation/interlibrary loan librarian and instructor at Stetson University, DeLand, Florida.

Kevin Spradlinhas been appointed reference/liaison librarian/map specialist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries.

John Stuckyhas been appointed librarian of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.

Stanley J. Wilderis now assistant dean for technical and financial services at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.

Joyce C. Wrightis now undergraduate librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign.

David Wuolohas joined the Louisiana State University Libraries, Baton Rouge, as electronic resources librarian.

Retirements

Mary Ansari,director of administrative services and branch libraries at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), retired in June after 25 years of service there. Ansari joined UNR as an assistant reference librarian in 1969. She later served as mines librarian for seven years, oversaw the Engineering and Life & Health Sciences Libraries, and served as head of the branch libraries.

Bill Beattyretired in June after 18 years at Northwestern University (NU) as a member of the University Archives’ staff and after a 32- year association with NU that began with his appointment in 1962 as librarian of the Medical School Library. Beatty began his career at the Library of the College of Physicians in Philadelphia, then became librarian of the Medical School Library at the University of Missouri. He is the coauthor of five books and the author of over 170 articles.

Katherine Beiershas retired as assistant university librarian for personnel at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Pat Bush,management bibliographer at Northwestern University (NU) Library, retired in June. Bush began serving at NU in 1951 as reference librarian, then became assistant librarian in 1955. In 1972 she became head of the Management Library, then head of management services in 1976, and management bibliographer in 1991. In 1986 Bush cofounded the Chicago Academic and Public Business Librarians Group.

Anne C. Edmonds,college librarian at Mount Holyoke College (MHC), retired in August. At commencement ceremonies in May, Edmonds was awarded an honorary doctor of letters by the college in recognition of her 30 years of service. Before joining MHC, Edmonds served at Douglass College of Rutgers University, Goucher College, City College of New York, and the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore. She served as president of ACRL in 1970-71.

Wilma Hartman

Wilma L. Hartman, li-brarian for public servic- es at the Linda Hall Li- brary in Kansas City, retired in June. Hartman began work at Linda Hall in 1968 when the director asked her to supervise the first formal Reference Department.

Before that she served as a reference librarian in the Business and Technical Department of the Kansas City, Missouri, Public Library.

Fred B. Hearthretired in July following more than ten years as library director at the University of Redlands. Hearth’s career spanned more than 25 years as a librarian/administrator and included successive positions at the University of California (Irvine and Santa Barbara), the 3M Company, the University of Minnesota, San Francisco State University, and the University of Redlands. Active in ACRL, he has served on the Editorial Board of C&RL News.

Jerry Jameshas retired as humanities bibliographer at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

George Kellerhas retired as chemistry librarian at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Joyce Lamont,assistant dean of libraries for special collections and preservation at the University of Alabama Libraries, retired in June after 40 years of service. Lamont has served as curator of the William Stanley Hoole Special Collection Library since 1975. Since she began working at the university in 1954, she has served in reference, circulation, and acquisitions. One of the four founders of the Society of Alabama Archivists, Lamont has served on the Executive Board and as vice-president and president.

Rosalee Longretired at the end of August from the Robert Crown Law Library at Stanford University after 36 years of service.

Carolyn Millerhas retired as science bibliog- rapher at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

William F. Rogers,associate dean for subject and special collections at Ohio University, re- tired in June after 25 years of service. Rogers began his career in the Art and Classics Library at Stanford University in I960. In 1967 he was named library director of Beaver College, then joined Ohio in 1969 as associate director for administration. At Ohio he has also served as assistant dean and acting director.

Roger Scharmer,head librarian of the Forest Products Laboratory Library at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, recently retired after 15 years of service.

Mary C. Scudderretired after 25 years of service to Lynchburg College, Virginia. Scudder began there as a reference librarian in 1969 and was promoted to library direc- tor in 1975.

Ted Slate,director of research services at Newsweek magazine, will retire this month after 28 years there. Slate began his career in I960 as an intern with the Li- brary of Congress. He then served with the Washington bureau of the New York Times, first as assistant librarian and then as librarian. After that he spent two years as assistant head and chief bibliographer of the Library of Congress’

Arms Control and Disarmament Bibliography Section, then joined Newsweek in 1966 as library director.

Shirley Smith,director of the Desert Research Institute (DRI) Library at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), retired in June after 30 years with the university and the Community College System of Nevada. Smith joined UNR in 1963 as a reference librarian, then agreed to help establish DRI in 1968.

Judy Steenrecently retired as head of interlibrary loan at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Ted Slate

Stanley Stevenshas retired as map librarian at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Marion Taylorhas retired as head of collec- tion planning at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Deaths

Hans Bart,former head of the Catalog Depart- ment at the University of Arizona (AZU), Tuc- son, died last spring. Bart left AZU in the 1970s to take over the Arizona State Museum’s Library and retired from there in the late ’80s.

Douglas W. Bryant,director of the Harvard University Library emeritus, died in June at the age of 80. Bryant worked as a librarian at the University of Michigan, the Detroit Public Li- brary, and the Burton History Library before World War II. After the war, he became assis- tant librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, and subsequently served as attaché to the American Embassy in London, where he was director of libraries in the U.S. Information Service. Joining Harvard in 1952, Bryant served there as administrative assistant librarian, asso- ciate director of the University Library, univer- sity librarian, and director of the university li- brary. He was a cofounder of the Research Libraries Group and helped establish the Na- tional Union Catalog of U.S. publications.

Guy Redvers Lyle,former director of libraries at Emory University until his retirement in 1972, died July 20 at the age of 87. Lyle had a long and distinguished career in librarianship, serving as head of the library at Antioch College; associ- ate in library economy at the University of Illi- nois; librarian of the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro; and director of libraries at Louisiana State Uni- versity. He joined Emory in 1954. Active in professional organizations, Lyle served on ACRL’s Board (1950-1953) and as president of ACRL (1954—1955). He was the author of many articles and essays, and the books Classified List of Periodicals for the College Library (1934), College Library Publicity (1935), and The Administration of the College Library (1944).

Guy Lyle

Archer Sims Jackson,former head of the Catalog Department at Trinity College Library in Hartford, Connecticut, died in August at the age of 86. A graduate of Alabama College for Women, Jackson received her MLS from Emory University. She retired in 1973.

Gerhard Brandt Naeseth,former associate director of the General Library System at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, died June 10 at the age of 81. Naeseth worked for the University of Michigan Libraries from 1934 to 1940, and as associate librarian at Oklahoma State University from 1940 to 1948. He worked for the UW-Madison libraries for 30 years until 1978, when he retired. Since then he administered the Vesterheim Genealogical Center and Naeseth Library, which he founded.

Robert Vosper,former university librarian at the University of California (UC), Los Angeles, died in May at the age of 80. Vosper began his career as a librarian at UC-Berkeley in 1940, worked in the Reference Department at Stanford University, became head of the Department of Acquisitions at UCLA in 1944, and served as UCLA’s first assistant librarian and first associate librarian. He retired from UCLA in 1973- Vosper served as president of ACRL in 1955-56, ALA president in 1965-66, and IFLA president from 1971 to 1977. ■
