Profiles

Linda Beaupréhas been named associate director of General Libraries at the University of Texas at Austin. Her appointment is a promotion from associate director of public services, a position she has held since 1980.

Beaupré joined the UT Austin staff as head librarian of the Reference Services Department in 1978 and served as acting assistant director for public services from 1979 to 1980. Previously she held the positions of associate university librarian for public services at the Moffitt Undergraduate Library, University of California, Berkeley, in 1977-1978, where she had started as a reference librarian in 1972; and supervisor of Microform Collections at the University of Michigan Graduate Library in 1967-1969.

Beaupré served on the College ‹b Research Libraries News Editorial Board from 1980-1984 and as chair of the RASD Nominating Committee. She has also worked on the ALA Instruction in the Use of Libraries Committee, the RASD Publications Committee, and on what is now the LAMA Library Organization and Management Section’s Comparative Library Organization Committee. Currently a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Academic Librarianship, she holds an MLS from the University of Michigan.

Alan Benenfeld,coordinator of physical sciences and technology libraries at UCLA since 1976, has been named dean and director of libraries at Northeastern University, Boston, effective November 15.

Benenfeld received his master’s degree in management from Northeastern in 1975. Prior to his graduation there he received an engineering degree from NYU in 1961 and an MLS from Rutgers in 1965. He was a research assistant in metallurgy at Cornell University from 1962 to 1964. In 1965 he moved to MIT where he was first assistant engineering librarian, then a research staff member in the Electronic Systems Laboratory, and finally as a systems analyst and senior information scientist.

Benenfeld was technical program chairman for the ASIS Anaheim conference in 1980 and cochairman of the ASIS conference technical program in 1975. He was president of the Rutgers Student Chapter of ASIS and of the New England Chapter in 1969. tie has served on numerous ALA committees, including the ACRL Science and Technology Section’s Conference Program Planning Committee for Dallas, the RASD Standards and Guidelines Committee and Publications Committee, and the LITA Editorial Board.

Michael K. Bucklandhas been appointed assistant vice-president for library plans and policies for the University of California, effective July 1. He has been acting assistant vice-president since August 1983, while concurrently serving as dean of the School of Library and Information Studies at UC-Berkeley. He resigned as dean in August.

Buckland was head of the Library Research Unit of the University of Lancaster, England, before moving to the U.S. in 1972 to become assistant director of libraries for technical services at Purdue University, Indiana. He joined UC as dean in 1976.

Buckland holds degrees from Oxford University and Sheffield University. His publications include two books and several reports and articles on library problems, management, and education.

David H. Eymanhas been named head librarian of Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York, effective July 2. Eyman has been director of libraries at Juniata College, Huntingdon, since 1978.

Eyman has earned a master’s degree in history from Ohio University and an MLS and a Ph.D. in library administration from the University of Michigan. He has been a part-time history faculty member at the University of Maryland’s Far East Division, and from 1979 to 1984 part-time faculty member at Juniata.

From 1970 to 1978 he taught library science at Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, the University of Michigan, and Northeastern Oklahoma State University. His first library administration position was at Central Michigan, where he started as assistant reference librarian and then served as assistant to the director of libraries. He served for one year as head librarian at Findlay College, Ohio, then became director of the Library and Learning Resources Center at Northeastern Oklahoma State in 1975.

Eyman has served on the board of the Interlibrary Delivery System of Pennsylvania and chaired several committees for the Pennsylvania Library Association. He has served on ACRL’s Audiovisual Committee and the CLS Nonprint Media and the College Library Committee.

Shirley Hallbladehas been appointed associate director of the library at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, effective July 1. She served most recently as director of Walker Management Library at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management, managing the move to new facilities and the development of the university’s newest library.

Shirley Hallblade

Prior to coming to Vanderbilt in 1980, Hallblade served as manager of the reference services branch of the Mississippi Research and Development Center in Jackson. From 1975 to 1978 she was assistant professor of library science at the University of Mississippi. She received a Fulbright-Hays grant in 1977 to study structure and governance in German higher education, and was a participant in the 1982-1983 ARL/OMS Consultant Training Program.

Hallblade holds a bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University, an MLS from Northern Illinois University, and a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Iowa.

Barbara J. Fordhas been appointed assistant director for public services at Trinity University, San Antonio. She has served as head of the Documents Department of the University of Illinois at Chicago Library since 1979, and assistant documents librarian from 1975-1979.

Ford has been very active in ACRL, serving as chair of the Academic Status Committee in 1983-1984, and as a member of the Academic and Research Libraries Personnel Study Group and the BIS Research Committee. She was also chair of the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table in 1976-1977 and has been the Illinois Library Association representative on ALA Council since 1980.

Ford earned a bachelor’s degree in history at Illinois Wesleyan University in 1968, a master’s in international relations at Tufts University in 1969, and an MLS at the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1973. In 1973-1975 she was director of the Soybean Insect Research Information Center in Urbana, and prior to that served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Panama and Nicaragua, where she organized Peace Corps libraries to support volunteer activities in home economics and health.

Jay Laddhas been appointed assistant director of libraries for department and undergraduate libraries at Ohio State University, Columbus. Ladd, who came to OSU in 1960, has been head of department libraries since 1968 and has previously served as head of the Commerce Library and administrative assistant to the director of libraries.

He is currently editor of the Ohio Library Association Bulletin, having served OLA in many capacities, most recently as a member of its Board of Directors. He is a life member of ALA and has a long-standing interest in library history.

Ladd received his MLS in 1954 from the Florida State University School of Library Services and Training. He also attended a Library Management Development Institute at Miami University in 1969 and several ARL continuing education programs, including a Library Management Skills Institute in 1978 and a Workshop on Motivation and Leadership in 1982.

Before coming to Ohio State, Ladd was an assistant reference librarian and assistant acquisitions librarian at the University of New Mexico, and bibliographer and cataloger for the Army War College. His articles have appeared in the OLA Bulletin, Serials Review, and American Book Collector.

DonaldA. B. Lindberg has been appointed director of the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda. He comes to NLM from the University of Missouri School of Medicine where he was director of the Information Science Group and professor of pathology. He is considered an expert in the field of computers in medicine and has published widely on that subject, including two books, The Computer and Medical Care (1968) and The Growth of Medical Information Systems in the United States (1979).

Lindberg has taught pathology at the University of Missouri since 1962. He has also served as chairman of the Department of Information Science at Missouri’s School of Library and Information Science from 1969 to 1971. He is the U.S. representative to the International Federation for Inform ation Processing and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for Medical Systems and Informatics.

Shirley Hallblade

JohnM. Meador Jr. has been named dean of library services at Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield.

He comes to SMSU after serving as assistant director of libraries at the University of Utah (1980-1984). His other experience includes a position as head of reference at the University of Houston (1973-1978).

Meador holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Louisville (1968), a master’s in English (1972) and an MLS (1973) from the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate in educational administration at the University of Utah.

Meador is a member of ALA, the Association for the Study of Higher Education, and the Bibliographical Society of America. He is co-author of The Robinson Jeffers Collection at the University of Houston (1975).

Imre Meszaros,director of the Art and Architecture Library at Washington University, has been named director of the library at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio. He replaces Bob Lee Mowery, who retired in 1983 after 10 years in that position. Before going to Washington University, Meszaros was art librarian for seven years at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Meszaros, a native of Budapest, holds a master’s in English from the University of Maryland, a master’s in data processing from Washington University, and an MLS from Catholic University. His principal research interests have been in collection development and management, rare books and archives, and library automation and data processing. He has been a consultant on collection preservation and an appraiser of collections.

P. Rorert Paustian has been appointed director of the Eugene Shedden Farley Library at Wilkes College, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, effective September 10. He has been assistant director for collections at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, since 1983. From 1979 to 1982 he served as collections librarian and then circulation librarian and assistant head of public services at UMKC.

Paustian received an MLS from the University of Missouri, a master’s in linguistics from the University of Kansas, and a bachelor’s degree in foreign languages from Missouri. He has written articles for Library Research, Library Journal, Neophilologus, Indogermanische Forschungen, and Names.

Larry R. Oberg

Larry R. Oberghas been named director of the library at Lewis-Clark State College, Lewiston, Idaho, effective in June. He has served as head of reference and collection development at that institution since January 1983. Oberg also holds the rank of assistant professor and teaches in the school librarian certification program.

Oberg is author of Human Services in Postrevolutionary Cuba, published in July by Greenwood Press. An active member of ACRL, he recently was appointed an assistant editor of College ó- Research Libraries. He is also active in the Idaho Library Association and the Pacific Northwest Library Association.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Phi Mu honor societies, Oberg received his undergraduate degree in anthropology and his MLS from the University of California, Berkeley.

Before coming to Lewis-Clark, Oberg served as reference librarian at Cubberley Education Library, Stanford, and as head of circulation services at the Education-Psychology Library, UC- Berkeley.

Judith Sessions

Judith Sessionshas been named university librarian at California State University, Chico, effective August 1. Most recently she was assistant university librarian for administrative services and acting head of technical services at George Washington University.

Prior to that she served as library director at Mount Vernon College and at the University of South Carolina, Salkehatchie Campus. She was also assistant college librarian for public services at the University of South Carolina, Spartanburg Regional Campus.

Sessions now serves as an ALA councilor, and has been a member of the College ò- Research Libraries Editorial Board, president of the District of Columbia Library Association, chair of the LITA Video and Communications Section, and president of ALA’s Junior Members Round Table.

She is the author of articles in Cable Libraries, the LITA Newsletter, American Libraries, and Telecommunications Policy. Her MLS is from Florida State University (1971).

Richard T. Sweeney,executive director of the Public Library of Columbus and Franklin County, Ohio, since 1979, has been named dean of library and information services at the Polytechnic Institute of New York, effective August 1. One of Sweeney’s first tasks will be to plan for a new 60,000- square foot centralized research library at Polytechnic’s Brooklyn campus.

Sweeney has been a featured speaker at many professional association conferences, especially on the topics of the electronic library, videotex, cable TV, and microcomputers. He holds an MLS from Drexel University and a master’s in librarianship from Glassboro State College. At Columbus and Franklin County he pioneered community cable data communications in both catalog access and circulation.

Sweeney has also held a teaching post at the Glassboro State College Graduate School of Library Science and has served as director of the Genessee County Library in Flint, Michigan, and the Atlantic City Free Public Library.

Claude Walston,director of programming applied technology for the ITT Corporation, has been named dean of the College of Library and Information Services, University of Maryland, College Park.

Walston has an international reputation in the field of information systems and management. His career with the IBM Corporation began in 1953 with his selection as one of the original members of the SAGE Project involved in the design and development of computing systems, and continued until 1981 when he served as manager of advanced software technology, Federal Systems Division Headquarters.

He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Ohio State University in 1953, and has taught courses at the University of Maryland in data processing, information retrieval, and systems analysis.

HazelM. Johnson, social sciences bibliographer at the University of Pittsburgh, retired on June 30, after 25 years of library service.

Irma Y. Johnson,science librarian at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, retired in June after 37 years of service. She has served both as president of ACRL’s New England Chapter and as deputy program chair for ACRL’s First National Conference, with special responsibility for contributed papers. Her writings include several publications relating to national information policy.

Stephen J. Keesretired from Niagara College, Welland, Ontario, on July 31,1984. He has served as chief librarian for the college since its opening in 1967.

Mary Lou Lacy,chief of the Humanities and History Division at Columbia University Libraries, retired on July 31.

Alice J. Murray,director of the McGeorge School of Law Library, University of the Pacific, Sacramento, retired on August 31. She has been at the School for 20 years and its director since 1970.

AliceM. Ridenour, associate director of libraries and head of technical services at Montana State University, Bozeman, retired on June 30th after 34 years of service at MSU and 44 years in the profession.

E. Graham Roberts,director of the Price Gilbert Memorial Library at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, retired on June 30 after 25 years of service. Roberts came to Georgia Tech in 1959 as chief science technology librarian and was appointed director in 1971.

Thedus Smithhas retired as government publications librarian, Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.

Eloyde Toveyretired on April 30 after fourteen years of service to the Bancroft Library’s Rare Book Collection at the University of California, Berkeley.

Rosemary Williamshas retired from her position of head of educational resources technical services, Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.

Deaths

Mary Jane Neff,head of the Periodicals Department at Emporia State University, Kansas, died after a three-year battle with cancer. She had served at Emporia for 20 years.

NelsonA. Piper, assistant university librarian for collections, died July 5. He joined the staff of University of California, Davis in 1956 as the assistant head of the Acquisitions Department. He became head of the Department in 1958 and was named the AUL for collections in 1962. When Piper arrived in 1956 the Library had approximately 100,000 volumes; he leaves behind a collection in excess of 1,700,000 volumes.

HowardH. Williams, reference librarian emeritus at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, died on July 6 while vacationing at Cape May. A graduate of Lake Forest College, he received his master’s degree in English at Columbia University and an MLS from Columbia in 1948. He came to Swarthmore in 1949 as a reader’s services librarian, then from 1967 to his retirement in 1975 he was a reference librarian responsible for general reference, library instruction, and interlibrary loans.

Josephine Williams,government documents librarian at East Texas State University, Commerce, passed away May 25th after 20 years of library service.
