• American Philanthropy, 1731-1860: Printed Works in the Collections of the American Philosophical Society, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Library Company of Philadelphia,compiled by Cornelia S. King (1984), includes both organizational material, such as catalogs and annual reports of philanthropic agencies, and informational material, such as addresses delivered before these organizations. •Beauty and the Beasts,by Stephen E. Weil, deputy director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (1983), is a collection of 19 essays and speeches written by Weil since 1971 on developments in art and the law. The essays examine the problems of strengthening museum management and providing public accountability without compromising museum goals. •Branch Libraries in ARL Institutions,SPEC Kit #99 (101 pages, November-December 1983), reviews the policies, practices, issues and trends concerning the establishment of branches, closing and consolidating branches, and the use of automation. •The Compleat Bookman: A Centennial Exhibition of the Work of Dard Hunter,compiled by Robert A. Tibbetts (31 pages, 1983), celebrates the centennial of the birth of Dard Hunter (1883-1966), the Chillicothe, Ohio, papermaker, artist, typemaker, and printer who founded the Mountain House Press. This pamphlet describes the materials of two Dard Hunter exhibits at the libraries of Ohio State University, Columbus, and Ohio University, Chillicothe. Copies may be obtained from Robert A. •Current Problems in Copyrightis the theme for the Fall 1983 issue of Library Trends, edited by Walter C. Allen and Jerome K. Miller. Articles include a view of the Register of Copyrights’ Five-Year Review Report by Nancy Marshall, and an examination of fair use under the 1976 Copyright Act by Roger D. •The Electronic Library: The Promise and the Process,by Kenneth E. •Joyce at Texas: Essays on the James Joyce Materials at the Humanities Research Center,edited by Dave Oliphant and Thomas Zigal (172 pages, 1983), has been published by the Center at the University of Texas at Austin in honor of the Joyce centenary, the University of Texas centennial celebration, and the 25th anniversary of the Humanities Research Center. •Leaders in American Academic Librarianship, 1925-1975,edited by Wayne A. Wiegand (419 pages, 1984), is an anthology of 15 essays on prominent academic librarians which were written by 15 library historians under a grant from the Council on Library Resources. Included are essays on Robert B. Downs, Keyes Metcalf, Louis Round Wilson, Robert Vosper, Maurice Tauber, and Blanche P. McCrum. Copies are available at $50 from ALA Publishing Services, 50 E. •The Message Format for Computer Based Message Systemsis a new Federal Information Processing Standard issued by the National Bureau of Standards. The format will facilitate the exchange of electronic messages among different electronic mail systems and was developed by the NBS Institute for Computer Sciences and Technology. Major vendors of message systems and services have announced their support of the standard and in some cases have already implemented it. •Microcomputers: A Planning and Implementation Guide for Librarians and Information Professionals,by Robert A. Walton (96 pages, 1983), describes the varied hardware and software that would be most useful to library professionals and offers advice on purchasing and maintaining the equipment. •Public/Private Cooperation: Funding for Small and Emerging Arts Programs(1983) is a new directory of 453 grants awarded in 1982 by the National Endowment for the Arts Expansion Arts Program and 1,257 other grants awarded by private foundations. The directory was created to improve access to funding sources and to aid in better grantmaking decisions by showing what other grantmakers are doing. Expansion arts emphasize the work of small arts organizations serving many types of communities, such as those in Appalachia, inner cities, and rural or tribal communities.
