* Andy Warhol’s Art and Films, by Patrick S.Smith (613 pages, October 1986), is an in-depth examination of the elusive and controversial creator of the Pop art of the 1950s and 60s. Smith examines the artist’s work, his studio practices, and the mystique that has surrounded him, using Warhol’s obsession with stardom and fame as the basis for discussing his films. The work features interviews with numerous Warhol associates and with the artist himself, and contains newly-published photographs and little-known information on Warhol’s origins and early years as a commercial illustrator. Bowker’s American Men and Women of Science (16th ed., 8 vols., 1986) contains 7,280 new profiles of scientists who have made significant contributions in their special fields. This edition includes a revised discipline index (volume 8) that groups the biographees under disciplines adapted from the National Science Foundation’s Taxonomy of Degree and Employment Specialties. Classification Schedules as Subject Enhancement in Online Catalogs, by Carol A. Mandel, is a report on an invitational conference sponsored by the Council on Library Resources, Forest Press, and the OCLC Online Computer Library Center held in Dublin, Ohio, in January 1986. The thirty participants included librarians, library school faculty, representatives of library networks, and other classification and online systems specialists. Discussions among participants centered around three themes: subject searching enhancements for future online catalogs; the use of class numbers in searching online; and the potential use of online classification schedules. End-User Searching: An Experiment at the University of Pittsburgh, by Fern Brody (107 pages, October 1986), describes Pittsburgh’s experimental end-user searching facility with ten microcomputers for testing all available search packages and user reactions to such a service. The facility was free to members of the University community for most of the period it was open. This report provides evaluations of the search packages used and presents information collected from surveys of users. The experiment resulted in end-user searching becoming an operating unit in Pittsburgh’s central library. Guide to the American Ethnic Press, by Lubomyr R. Wynar (280 pages, 1986), is the first comprehensive directory to almost 600 newspapers and periodicals published by 17 Slavic and East European groups: Bulgarians, Byelorussians, Carpatho-Ruthenians, Cossacks, Croatians, Czechs, Estonians, Hungarians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Poles, Romanians, Russians, Serbians, Slovaks, Slovenians, Ukrainians, and Yugoslavians. Following an essay on the scope and nature of the ethnic press, the volume includes a description of each title and detailed statistical analyses of the presses of individual ethnic groups. Newspaper Libraries: A Bibliography 1933–85, compiled by Celia Wall, is a complete list of English-language books, parts of books, professional and trade journal articles, technical memoranda, pamphlets, and unpublished materials on newspaper libraries. Copies may be ordered for $12.50 from the Special Libraries Association, 1700 18th St., N.W., Washington, DC 20009.

Periodical Publications in Harvard Science Libraries has resumed publication in microfiche. This semi-annual list consists of a title listing and a keyword index, and is accompanied by an explanatory booklet. The September 1986 edition is the first to include publications received by the Tozzer Library, formerly known as the Library of the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Anthropology. Orders for the September 1986 issue should be accompanied by a check made out to Harvard College Library for $18. Standing orders are not accepted. Research Collections in Microform, compiledby Charlene York and Alice Weaver (200 pages, 1986), lists nearly 200 major microform collections held by the Bowling Green State University Library and the University of Toledo Libraries. Each entry contains the full title of the collection and its call number, the number of reels or fiche, a brief content description indicating the collection’s scope, how it is arranged, and whatever bibliographic guides may exist. At the end of the work there is a subject index based on Library of Congress subject headings. The Samuel Beckett Collection at Washington University Libraries: A Guide, compiled by Sharon Bangert (22 pages, October 1986), is the first comprehensive guide to Washington’s extensive holdings of Samuel Beckett’s books and manuscripts. The guide is the culmination of a University-wide celebration, “Beckett at 80,” which featured an exhibition of Beckett material. A copy may be requested from Timothy D. Southern Travels: Journal of John H.B. Latrobe, 1834, edited by Samuel Wilson Jr. (118 pages, 1986), is the narrative of the Baltimore attorney’s two-month trip to New Orleans and Natchez in 1834. Besides providing a capsule view of American transportation in the 1830s, the journal also touches on important political, economic, and social issues of the times. The latest edition of the Union List of Serials of the Boston Library Consortium includes over 71,000 titles and more than 175,000 holdings from its member libraries: Boston College, Boston Public, Boston University, Brandeis, MIT, Northeastern, Massachusetts State Library, Tufts, the University of Massachusetts, and Wellesley. The list is published semiannually in microfiche and includes a keyword index to titles. Copies may be purchased for $50.
