John C. Swan
John C. Swanwas named head librarian at Bennington College, Bennington, Vermont, effective October 1.
Swan had been reference librarian of Wabash College’s Lilly Library since 1979. He served for five years as chair of the Intellectual Freedom Committee of the Indiana Library Association - Library Trustees Association and is currently a member of ALA’s Intellectual Freedom Round Table, of which he was chair in 1985–86.
Swan has an MLS from Simmons College, a bachelor’s degree from Boston University, and a master’s and Ph.D. in English literature from Tufts University. He is coauthor, with Martin Green, of The Triumph of Pierrot: The Commedia dell’arte and the Modern Imagination (1986). Swan has also edited an anthology of writing about music published by the Boston Public Library, and has published articles and reviews in Library Journal and other journals.
James C. Thompson
James C. Thompsonwas named university librarian at the University of California, Riverside, effective September 2. He was formerly associate university librarian at Rice University.
A 1967 graduate or Princeton University, Thompson has a master’s degree in English (1971) and an MLS (1972) from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has been active in local, state, regional and national library organizations and has served as chair of several ALA discussion groups and sections and as a member of the Library and Information Technology Association board of directors.
Thompson has written articles and reviews for American Libraries, Library Quarterly, Serials Review, and the Journal of Academic Librarianship. He has served as a consultant on library automation, computerized online cataloging, and collection development.
People in the News
Millicent D. Abell,university librarian at Yale, was elected to membership in the American Antiquarian Society at the Society’s 174th annual meeting in Worcester, Massachusetts. Abell, who was librarian at the University of California at San Diego until 1984, was president of ACRL in 1980–81 and until recently served on the ALA Council. Others of the twelve elected to membership at the October 15 meeting were Timothy Forbes of New York, publisher of American Heritage magazine; Richard Slotkin, professor of English at Wesleyan University and a noted author; and New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.
Herbert F. Johnson, director of the Emory University Library, took office as president of the Association of Research Libraries at the 109th Membership Meeting of the Association in Washington, D.C., October 22–23. Johnson succeeds Anne Woodsworth, associate provost for libraries at the University of Pittsburgh. Elaine F. Sloan, dean of university libraries at Indiana University, was elected vice-president/president-elect.

Retirements
Hilda Bohem,librarian in the Special Collections Department at the University of California, Los Angeles, retired in August. Before coming to UCLA in 1969, Bohem was a story analyst and writer in the motion picture industry.
Robert Brasher,senior assistant librarian at California State University, Long Beach, retired May 30, 1986, after 30 years of service. After receiving his MLS from Denver University, Brasher held cataloging positions at Santa Rosa and Whittier Colleges before becoming a cataloger at CSULB in 1956. He remained in technical services until 1978, when he transferred to Special Collections and Archives where he remained until retirement.
Jacqueline Colbywill retire from the Catalogue Department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on March 31, 1987, after 20 years of service. Colby was appointed assistant head of the department in 1965 with special responsibility for the LC Cataloguing Section, then became head of the Original Cataloguing Section in 1975 with additional responsibility for Institute Library Catalogue editing and maintenance. She was appointed associate head for Original Monograph Cataloguing and Catalogue Editing in 1982. Colby has served as president of the New England Technical Services librarians and as a Member of the RTSD Catalog Classification Section. She has conducted workshops in cataloging and was a contributing author to Library Practice in Hospitals (1982).
Maurine Dickerson,librarian at Mid America Nazarene College, Olathe, Kansas, retired this summer.
Kilbourn L. Janacek,director of libraries at North Dakota State University, Fargo, retired last May.
Norah Jones,head of the Technical Services Department at the University of California, Los Angeles, since 1970, retired in October. Jones began her career in 1945 as a library assistant, becoming head of the College Library in 1958.
Lloyd Kramer
Lloyd Kramer,associate director of the University Library and Learning Resources Center at California State University, Long Beach, since 1973, retired January 31, 1986. Prior to his appointment at CSULB, Kramer held positions at California State Polytechnical University, Pomona Public Library, Humboldt State College, Washington State University, the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, and the College of St. Francis, where he served successively as director of libraries, assistant vice president for academic affairs, and vice president of administration. He earned an MLS from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s in public administration from CSULB.
Audree Malkin,head of the Theater Arts Library at the University of California, Los Angeles, retired in October after 30 years of service. Malkin began her career in 1956 as a library assistant in the music library and was appointed head of the Theater Arts Library in 1970.
W. Robert Pollard, head of reference at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, retired February 29, 1986. Pollard joined the library in 1965 as assistant catalog librarian and became head of reference in 1971.
Margaret Steckenreiter,associate archivist in the University Archives (Special Collections Department) at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, will retire at the end of this year after 23 years of service. Steckenreiter began her career at the University in 1963, becoming assistant to the archivist in 1977 and later associate archivist.
Deaths
Hugh Craig Atkinson,director of the University of Illinois Libraries, Urbana-Champaign, died October 24 at age 52. Atkinson, who had been director for 10 years, presided over the computerization of the library’s card catalog, the construction of the $6.7 million sixth stack addition, and, most recently, the acquisition of the library’s seven-millionth volume.
Hugh C. Atkinson
Before moving to Illinois in 1976, Atkinson was director of libraries at Ohio State University (1971–76), having served since 1967 as assistant director for public services. Born in Chicago, Atkinson attended St. Benedict’s College, where he studied accounting and worked for Lawrence Scudder and Co. as a junior accountant (1951–56). He studied English at the University of Chicago and in 1959 received his MLS from Chicago’s Graduate Library School, at the same time working as an assistant in rare books at the university library.
Atkinson served as reader services librarian at Pennsylvania Military College (1958–61); head of reference (1961–64), acting assistant director of health sciences libraries (1966–67), and assistant director of libraries for technical services (1964–67) at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was a member of the board of directors of the Association of Research Libraries and OCLC, a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Library Administration, and was active in other professional library organizations.
Among his recent publications were “Automation in Austerity” (a chapter in the 1984 book Austerity Management in Academic Libraries), “Centralized Library Collections: A Brief for the Other Side” in the Journal of Academic Librarianship, and several columns in the Library Journal’s series on technology, people and change.
Helvi Bessenyei,Scandinavian collections librarian at the University of California at Berkeley, died October 14 after an illness of several months. Bessenyei joined Berkeley in 1967 after receiving an MLS from the university and worked initially in the Bibliographical and Periodical Divisions of the Acquisition Department. She later became head of the Serials Department’s Periodical Division, reference and technical services librarian in the Natural Resources Library, and also held a joint assignment with the Education/Psychology Library and the Collection Development and Reference Services Department. Bessenyei became responsible for the Scandinavian collections in 1982.
Helen Addison Everett,former university librarian at Humboldt State University, Eureka, California, died February 14, 1986. Born in Oregon in 1902, Everett was a graduate of the University of Oregon and received her MLS from the University of California, Berkeley. She had taught
Spanish at two Oregon high schools and later held library positions at the University of Oregon, Coos Bay High School, Medford Public Schools, and Southern Oregon College of Education before coming to Humboldt in 1939. After retiring in 1967, Everett devoted herself to the establishment of a new Humboldt County Public Library, now in the planning stage.
David Thompson,former assistant chief in the Cataloging Department and later acting chief in the Serials Department at Stanford University, died October 12 after a 10-month illness. ■■
