New current topics group to meet

The ACRL University Libraries Section’s Current Topics Discussion Group has recently been formed in response to the need for a small group setting where university librarians can discuss topics of mutual interest. The Chicago Midwinter Meeting has been set for Saturday, January 17, 1987, at 2:00 p.m., with the location to be announced in the conference program. This first discussion session will explore the various organizational structures used in university libraries and what innovative structural changes are occurring as a result of the introduction of online systems and other new technology, new relationships with academic computing centers, or other trends faced by academic libraries today. How are staff adapting? How successful are the changes?

Three speakers have agreed to make brief presentations. Joanne Euster, who is now university librarian at Rutgers as well as ACRL Vice-President/President-Elect, is doing preparation for a book on library organizational structures and will share some of her early findings. Jordan Scepanski, director of the library and learning resources at California State University, Long Beach, will be the second speaker. Library units there are broad subject areas or departments with a de-emphasis on function-based units. The organization is a matrix structure which follows a faculty model. Charling Fagan, assistant director of social sciences at Columbia University Libraries, will speak about the impact on job responsibilities and library structures as a result of the Computing Center reporting to the Library.

The three presentations are intended to serve as a kick-off to discussion and a chance for attendees to share experiences. If you plan to attend and would like to share your organizational chart with the group, please send a copy to Janice Koyama, Head Librarian, Moffitt Undergraduate Library, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720, by January 10, 1987, so that copies can be made. If you prefer, you can bring 20–30 copies to the meeting.

The ULS Current Topics Discussion group is a concept which will be tested during 1987 at Midwinter and at the Annual Conference in order to evaluate the need for this type of forum. The key is to identify current concerns of librarians working in all areas and at all levels in university libraries and provide an opportunity to discuss these concerns in a group of 40 or fewer people. In this way, librarians can make contact with colleagues with mutual interests and can share ideas to help solve problems at their own institutions. The organizing committee welcomes suggestions for future topics. Please send ideas to Janice Koyama, Chair, at the address listed above, or bring suggestions to the Midwinter session on January 17.

Proposed revision to ACRL’s “Statement on the Terminal Professional Degree for Academic Librarians”

The ACRL Academic Status Committee is proposing a minor revision for clarification in the “Statement on the Terminal Professional Degree for Academic Librarians.’’ Approved as policy by the Board of Directors of the Association of College and Research Libraries on January 23, 1975, the original statement reads as follows:

“The master’s degree in library science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association is the appropriate terminal professional degree for academic librarians.”

Since many programs no longer include “library science” as the designated title for the professional degree, and since ALA accredits programs rather than schools, the Academic Status Committee unanimously endorses the following change:

“The master’s degree from an academic program accredited by the American Library Association is the appropriate terminal professional degree for academic librarians.”

Please notethat this is not a change in ACRL policy. It is merely a clarification in the wording of the statement which brings it into harmony with ALA Policy 54.4. The policy continues to recognize the master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program. Further, the policy regarding the “terminal professional degree” does not compromise requirements imposed by some institutions for another advanced academic degree.

During committee discussions on the proposed change, other substantive issues have also been discussed. Among them have been the acceptance of the master’s degree as the “terminal” degree for academic librarians and the assumption that ALA is the only organization which accredits library school programs. The committee recognizes that many universities now require additional graduate degrees for librarians employed as faculty members; furthermore, library school programs offered in other countries and accredited by different organizations are excluded from this statement. These and other concerns related to this statement will receive further deliberation by the committee. For the time being, the only change recommended is that cited above.

Please send your comments about this proposed revision to the committee chair, Keith Cottam, 1167 Inca Drive, Laramie, WY 82070, or call him at The University of Wyoming at (307) 766-3279. The Committee would also appreciate hearing about your concerns relating to other possible revisions. Comments must be received by January 5, 1987.
