• Achieving Quality and Diversitu: Universities in a Multicultural Society,by Richard C. Richardson Jr. and Elizabeth Fisk Skinner (271 pages, January 1991), provides a model for universities to adapt programs and services that will improve success rates for underrepresented African- American, Hispanic, and American Indian students. The model is based on an analysis of ten colleges and universities that have graduated students from one or more underrepresented groups at rates that exceed the average for their state and for the nation. Funded by the U.S. Office of Educational Research and Improvement, the book focuses on state policy environments and organizational practices related to positive outcomes for diversity and student achievement. • Antarctica: An Encyclopedia,by John Ste-wart (2 vols., 1226 pages, 1990), is a detailed and comprehensive compendium of geographical, historical, and scientific facts about the Southern Continent. The author presents 15,000 alphabetically arranged and cross-referenced entries describing Antarctic place names, explorers, scientists, scientific stations, vessels, tour operators, scientific terms, animals, and plants. No maps or illustrations accompany the text, so the reader will have to seek visual and cartographic information from the 400+ books listed in the bibliography. Appendixes include a general chronology of the continent from 1502 through 1990 and a list of 570 expeditions. Even modest-sized geographic collections will benefit from this thorough work. Mattson (252 pages, January 1991), presents current data on the condition of our natural resources, energy, agriculture, and urban centers. In-depth background essays on such topics as coastal zone management, noise and light pollution, toxic threats, nonfuel minerals, rangelands and wetlands are accompanied by four-color maps, photographs, charts, graphs, and diagrams. In addition, focus maps furnish case studies of major events or places that analyze the issues and policies involved. • Dial In. 1990-91: An Annual Guide to Library Online Public Access Catalogs in North America,edited by Michael Schuyler (228 pages, 1990), is a directory of more than 150 libraries supporting online access to their catalogs for home computer users. The entries vary from large research libraries to small public libraries; the only requirement for listing is that the online catalog is accessible by modem from a microcomputer. Plans are for the dial-in guide to be updated every September. Dial-in numbers are listed along with the proper parameters and connect speeds, network affiliation, and contacts for both technical and policy questions. • Directory of Financial Aids for Women. 1991-1992,by Gail Ann Schlachter (478 pages, January 1991), identifies 1,650 scholarships, fellowships, grants, loans, awards, and internships set aside for women and women’s organizations. Each entry provides detailed information on program title, sponsoring organization address and telephone number, scope and purpose, eligibility, remuneration, duration, special features and limitations, number of awards, and deadline date. The information is indexed by program title, sponsoring organization, geographic coverage, subject, and deadline dates. The volume also lists the addresses and telephone numbers of all state sources of educational benefits, and describes the 60 key directories that any individual can use to locate additional sources of financial assistance. More than 70% of the entries in this new edition have been updated, and nearly 400 new programs have been added. • The Federal Roles in Support o f Academic Libraries: An Overview, by R. Kathleen Molz (28 pages, January 1991), is an overview of U.S. government funding of academic library services and programs. Prepared in anticipation of the White House Conference on Libraries and Information Services to be held in July, this booklet summarizes the Higher Education Act of 1965 (up for reauthorization in September 1991), the Library Services and Construction Act, the Depository Library Program, and the National Research and Education Network. The role of the federal judiciary, federal foundations, and other federal agencies in support of academic libraries is also described. • Guides to Library of Congress Subject Headings and Classification on Peace and International Conflict Resolution, compiledbyjudith Kessinger (488 pages, January 1991), was prepared by the United States Institute of Peace with the cooperation and advice of the Library of Congress Office of Subject Heading Policy. The guide includes LC headings and classification schedules for relevant subject areas in the humanities, law, social sciences, and military science. Created to aid both researchers and collection developers, the book uses familiar LC terminology and structure. • The History of the American Cinema, a projected ten-volume series, chronicles the art, the impact, the technology, and the business of the American film industry from Muybridge and Edison to the 1980s. The first three volumes were published in January; the next seven are scheduled to appear over the next two years. The Emergence of Cinema: The American Screen to 1907 (vol. 1, 560 pages), by Charles Musser, discusses the antecedents of film and the first 12 years of cinema as a business and an art form within a context of European technological roots. The Transformation of Cinema, 1908-1915 (vol. 2, 310 pages), by Eileen Bowser, examines the contributions of film figures who shaped the industry in the period when the star system developed and the silent film carved a niche in the business world. An Evening’s Entertainment: The Age of the Silent Feature Picture, 1915-1928 (vol. 3, 375 pages), by Richard Koszarski, chronicles the development of movie palaces and the establishment of Hollywood as the capital of the American film industry. • Strengthening the V.S.-ĭapan Libraru Partnership in the Global Information Flow,edited by Theodore F.Welch, et al. (180 + 180 pages, January 1991), contains the proceedings of the fourth U.S.-Japan Conference on Libraries and Information Science in Higher Education, held in October 1988 in Racine, Wisconsin. The topics discussed reflect the current concerns about the need to share bibliographic data more efficiently, and in particular to provide ready access to each country’s Chinese-Japanese-Korean character codes. Conservation and preservation of library materials continue to generate interest on both sides of the Pacific. Also explored are opportunities for collecting Japanese materials to enrich and maintain the holdings started years ago, when the U.S. dollar had more purchasing power overseas. Databases and networks, and copyright issues related to them, were discussed frequently at this conference. This volume reprints the prepared speeches, in both their English and Japanese texts.
