Ann-Christe Galloway

The following have been appointed as members of the Library of California Board: Penny Kastanis, faculty/coordinator for the School Libraiy Media Teacher Credential Program at California State University-Sacramento and executive director of the California School Library Association; Michael Keller, university librarian/ director of academic information resources at Stanford University; Sarah Pritchard, university librarian at the University of Califomia-Santa Barbara; and Victoria Fong (reappointment), director of the Peninsula Library Foundation.

Appointments

Mark L. Daganaar

Mark L. Daganaarhas been named director of library services for Johnson County Commu- nity College’s Billington Library in Overland Park, Kansas. Daganaar previ- ously served as library di- rector at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana, and Three Riv- ers Community College in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

Myrna McCallister,director of libraries at the University of Baltimore since 1998, has been named dean of library services at Indiana State University. Prior to her position at the University of Baltimore, McCallister served as library director at Muhlenberg College (1994-98) and as associate university librarian for technical services at Appalachian State University (1988-94), among other positions. She is a member of ALA’s Library Administration and Management Association and ACRL’s College Library Section. McCallister coauthored “Effective Meetings,” a chapter in Joan Giesecke’s Practical Tips for New Supewisors(199'2), and “The Western North Carolina Library Network: An Experiment in Resource Sharing,” a chapter in Jennifer Cargill and Diane Graves’ Advances in Library Resource Sharing (1992).

Kitty J. Simmonshas been appointed interim library director at the La Sierra University Library in Riverside, California.

N. J. Wolfe

N.J. Wolfehas been appointed director of the Gladys Marcus Library at New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technol- ogy (FIT). Wolfe brings more than 20 years of ex- perience in library admini- stration to FIT. Since 1998, he was director of the Sidney Silverman Li- brary and Learning Re- source Center at Bergen Community College in New Jersey, where he helped adapt the library to current technology needs. From 1990 to 1998, he supervised a wide range of services and programs at the Frederick L. Ehrman Medical Library of the New York University Medical Center, where he became associate director and associate cura- tor. From 1988 to 1990, he headed the interli- brary loan department at Columbia University’s Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library. He was also librarian for the medical and health sci- ence libraries at the New York Academy of Medi- cine at Ohio State University and Saint Joseph Hospital in Reading, Pennsylvania.

John Butlerhas assumed a new assignment as director of the digital library development laboratory at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

Brett Cloydis now the state, foreign, and international documents librarian for the University of Iowa Libraries.

Stephen Fletcheris now photographic archivist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Nathan Georgitishas been appointed metadata librarian and special projects team leader in the catalog department of the University of Oregon Libraries.

Janis Holderis now university archivist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Wiley E. Koonjr.has been appointed director of library services at Beacon College Library.

Leah McGinnisis now undergraduate librarian at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Annette Morrishas been appointed brittle books coordinator at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign.

Priscilla Perkinsis the new head of technical services at Lynchburg College.

Miranda Beaven Remnekhas joined the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign as head of the Slavic and East European Library.

Hee-sook Shinhas been appointed Korean studies librarian in the C. V. Starr East Asian Library at Columbia University.

Denise Shoreyhas been named head of the reference department at the Northwestern University Library.

Jerilyn Veldofis now director of undergraduate services at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

JiaXuhas been appointed East Asian cata- loger at the University of Iowa Libraries.

Retirements

James Agenbroadhas retired after 33 years of service as a systems analyst at the Library of Congress. Involved with MARC since the pilot project, more recently as a member of the Unicode Consortium, he sought to improve OPAC access equity to materials in non-Roman writing systems by expanding the MARC character set.

Deaths

Barbara Coburn,85, assistant professor emerita at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), died on January 14. She held positions at the Des Moines Public Library and Columbia Lǐniversity Library before joining the faculty at the UIUC Library. She retired in 1981 as acquisitions bibliographer and assistant professor of library administration.

Marilyn Grant,56, senior reference librar- ian/bibliographer at Boston College’s O’Neill Library, has died. Grant was an early pioneer of online database searching, and, in 1977, she cofounded the New England Online Users Group, an organization of more than 200 Bos- ton-area librarians who explored the role of computer technology in libraries. At Boston College, in addition to being the bibliographer specializing in chemistry, she was the librarian for the Communications Department and the Black Studies Program.

John Miller

John Miller,80, former American History Division chief at the New York Public Library (NYPL), died on December 15, 2002, of lung cancer. In his 34-year career in librarianship, taking place entirely at the research libraries at NYPL, Miller served in a variety of capacities, including executive as- sistant for the research libraries and, for more than a decade, chief of the American History Division. In 1980, he was acting chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and directed the cen- ter during its relocation. Subsequently he was named chief of NYPL’s U.S. History, Local History and Genealogy Division. Miller retired from the library in 1987. He is the author of The Arnerican ldea: Discovery and Settlement, Revo- lution, and Independence, the catalog for the libraiy’s 1976 exhibition commemorating the nation’s bicentennial. Miller also wrote articles for Microfonn Review and The Bookmark.
