Electronic records symposium
The Canadian Conservation Institute, the National Archives of Canada, and the National Library of Canada are hosting Symposium 2003—Preservation of Electronic Records: New Knowledge and Decision-Making in Ottawa, Canada, September 15-18, 2003. The symposium agenda is structured to address preservation issues in the chronological order in which they are normally encountered by institutions acquiring electronic records. Papers, case studies, critical reviews, and poster sessions will cover criteria for determining value and authenticity, developing a preservation strategy, deterioration, storage, longevity, and disaster recovery. The symposium will unofficially begin on September 14, with a lecture open to the general public entitled “Preservation Quest: How to Preserve your Home Movies, CDs, Videos, and More.”

jHuracãn! Cómo Sobreviwrla Gmn Tormenta: Un texto båsicopam bibliotbecas, museos yarchivos‚ a Spanish translation of Hurricane! Surviving the Big One by Michael Trinkley, is now available online. It places special emphasis on planning, covering hurricane-resistant building design, and retrofitting structures to improve hurricane resistance. It also covers what to do before, during, and after a hurricane.
This revised version of die 1998 original in English, incorporates a new introduction by Hilda Abreu de Utermöhlen, conservator at the Centro Cultural Eduardo León Jimenes Santiago in the Dominican Republic, and an appendix specifically about Caribbean building structures written by Maria Gonzalez, a doctoral student in the School of Information at the University of Texas-Austin.

IFLA preconference
The Preseivation and Conservation Section of the Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) will hold a two-and-a-half- day conference, Preparing for the Worst, Planning for the Best: Protecting our Cultural Heritage from Disaster, July 30 to August 1, 2003, in Berlin, Germany (before the start of IFLA’s annual conference). The program is intended to help library and archives administrators prepare for and recover books, paper, photographs, film, tape, and discs from both natural and man- made disasters. It will cover national policy planning, plans in action, lessons learned, priorities for salvage, and new recovery technologies.

BookLab II
Craig Jensen and Sabina Daly opened BookLab II in January 2003 and are initially offering limited edition binding, custom box making, and book repair services. This is a continuation in part of BookLab, the book repair and preseivation photocopying enterprise involving Gary Frost, Craig Jensen, Acme Bookbinding, and Bridgeport National Bindery, which closed in December 1998.
