College & Research Libraries News

In the News

April is National Poetry Month and, to celebrate the occasion, this issue’s Internet Resources column focuses on e-Poetry (p. 249). The article explores recent developments in the world of poetry and provides interesting and unusual examples of the breadth of e-poetry information currently available online.

Also in this issue is “The bewildering new world of scholarly communication” (p. 242), in which Howard M. Dess and Myoung C. Wilson discuss the role of librarians in helping faculty to understand the issues of scholarly communication. The authors show how their well-planned initiative, which included creating a brochure and Web site and organizing a symposium, led to greater understanding of and collaboration on scholarly communication issues on their campus.

Taking it beyond the campus, Lynn Lampert uses this year’s presidential theme of New Realities, New Relationships to ask the question, “Who’s afraid of partnerships for information literacy initiatives?” (p. 246). While many have been asked to partner with faculty and other campus groups outside of the library, the author provides the unique perspective of someone who has participated in a partnership within the greater community. Learn how she designed a class promoting information literacy in the Los Angeles County Academy program, a public-to-public partnership created to meet Los Angeles County’s workforce training and development needs.

The final wrap-up of Midwinter activities appears here as well. You can find out what the University Libraries Section has on its plate (p. 254) and read an overview of the President’s Discussion Forum, “A world of values” (p. 252).

Congratulations to Ross Atkinson, ACRL’s 2003 Academic/Research Librarian of the Year, the winners of ACRL’s Excellence in Academic Libraries Awards, and other award winners. See the article on page 260 for more information.
