EARLE C. FERGUSONhas been appointed director of libraries for the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, effective July 1. Since July 1983 he has been director pro tern; during the previous year he was appointed associate director and three months later, acting director.

Ferguson first came to the University in 1970 when he was appointed cataloger for the Law Library. He is a graduate of the Universities of Windsor and Toronto, where he earned his bachelor of arts and bachelor of library science degrees respectively. He has served on a number of professional committees in the Canadian Association of University Teachers, the Canadian Library Association, the Canadian Association of College and University Libraries, the Canadian Association of Law Libraries, and the American Association of Law Libraries.

Ferguson chaired the Law Libraries Cooperative Cataloguing Group from 1972 until his appointment as associate director in 1982.

THOMAS J. GALVIN, dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Library and Information Science, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation (COPA). He will serve as one of three representatives of the Assembly of Specialized Accrediting Bodies, the 37-member group that includes ALA, the American Bar Association, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, and the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business. COPA is the national non-governmental self- regulatory organization that works to foster and facilitate the role of accrediting agencies in promoting and ensuring the quality and diversity of American post-secondary education.

MARTIN LEWIS, assistant librarian at the Medical and Dental Library at the University of Leeds, England, has joined the Barker Engineering Library at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for one year as an exchange program participant. Earlier, Lewis had been assistant librarian at the Leeds Science and Engineering Library, and at MIT he will be responsible for collection development activities in mechanical engineering.

Retirements

MELVA DWYER, head of the Fine Arts Division at the University of British Columbia, retired in December after 31 years of service.

MARC GITTELSOHN, undergraduate librarian at the University of California, San Diego, retired on December 28.

ESTHER JOHNSON, head of the Forestry Library at the University of California, Berkeley, retired on January 3 after over 32 years of service.

MARTHA MOORE, senior cataloger in the Library of Congress Serial Record Division, retired August 31 with over 15 years of Federal service.

RENATA ROTKOWITZ, director of public services and collection development for the libraries of Washington University, St. Louis, retired on November 30.

Rotkowitz began her career at Washington University in 1966 as a Slavic and West Euro- pean bibliographer, then rose to the rank of principal bibliographer. She served in this capac- ity before being pro- moted to assistant uni- versity librarian, then acting university librar- ian from February 1977 to September 1978, at which time she was ap- pointed to her most recent position.

She has also taught courses in the University’s library science program and courses in Polish history. After retirement she will continue teaching at Washington University in the Western European Studies Program.

ELISABETH SCITOVSKY, an original cataloger at Stanford University since 1970, retired on November 30. She had received her first library degree in Budapest, then received a second MLS at Rutgers after coming to this country in 1956.

DOROTHY SHIELDS, West European bibliographer at the University of British Columbia, retired in December after 23 years of service.

HARRY TARLIN, director of Utica College Library, New York, for 15 years, retired in December. He had previously served for 15 years at Bran- deis University.

Deaths

BARBARA BEGG, reference librarian at the Science & Engineering Library, University of California, San Diego, passed away on October 13.

FLORENCE HILDEBRANDT, rare book cataloger at the University of California, Davis, from 1964 to 1967, died in Massachusetts a few months ago. She had earlier served as head of the Loan Department at Davis.

CONRAD C. REINING, former head of the African Section at the Library of Congress, died on October 30 after a long illness. An internationally recognized anthropologist, Reining served as head of the Section from 1960 to 1966.
