CPA announces new Web site

The Colorado Preservation Alliance (CPA) has created a Web site entitled “On the Road to Preservation.” While focusing on topics of interest to Colorado cultural institutions, much of the Web site has broader appeal. It features the full-text of articles from the Colorado Preservation Alert, bibliographies, Web site and resource lists, and a calendar. Examples of article titles indude “The $103 Preservation Library,” “Shelving Books and Use of Book Trucks,” “Leather Dressing: To Dress or Not to Dress,’” and “The Proper Care and Feeding of Videotape.” There is an extensive Disaster Recovery Database, which provides basic information about the salvage of materials that have been damaged by water, fire or mold, as well as links to more detailed information. The URL is http://www.aclin.org/ other/libraries/cpa/. There is also telnet access at ACLIN-›Information Resources-›Library Professional Services-›Colorado Preservation Alliance. For additional information contact Karen Jones at (303) 275-2214 or Sharon Partridge at (303) 232-9507.

To film or to scan

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) will present a three-day workshop “Preservation Options in a Digital World: To Film or To Scan” on May 11-13, 1999, in Denver, Colorado. This workshop explores the uses of two reformatting technologies, preservation microfilming, and digital imaging.

It will evaluate the similarities and differences between them and indicate which management techniques used for microfilming projects can also be used for digital projects. Attendees will learn to plan projects, select and prepare materials, understand the technologies, inspect production, and maintain quality control. The faculty includes Susan Wrynn (NEDCC), Paul Conway (Yale University), Becky Ryder (University of Kentucky), and Bob Mottice (Mottice Micrographics, Inc.).

The workshop fee is $250 and includes a copy of Introduction to Imaging by Howard Besser and Jennifer Trant. Registration is limited to 18 participants, accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information contact Gay Tracy, NEDCC, 100 Brickstone Square, Andover, MA 01810-1494; phone: (978) 470-1010; fax: (978) 475-6021; e-mail: tracy@nedcc.org; www: http:// www.nedcc.org.

RAP and ARCC merge

In October 1998, the Regional Alliance for Preservation (RAP) and the Association of Regional Conservation Centers (ARCC) merged, making RAP the “education and information arm” of ARCC. RAP’s five members (AMIGOS Preservation Services, Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, Northeast Documents Conservation Center, SOLINET, and Upper Midwest Conservation Association) will work with nine ARCC members (Balboa Art Conservation Center, Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center, Intermuseum Conservation Association, Peebles Island Resource Center, Rocky Mountain Conservation Center, Straus Center for Conservation, Textile Conservation Center, Textile Conservation Workshop, and Williamstown Art Conservation Center) to broaden RAP’s outreach activities. In particular, RAP can now provide information about the preservation of a variety of materials and objects. For more information, consult the RAP Web site at http:// www.solinet.net/rap/.

CALIPR available in Spanish

Calipr, the preservation planning software developed in 1989 by the Conservation Department of the University of California, Berkeley, is now available in Spanish. It is an automated expert system that uses statistical sampling techniques and a survey questionnaire to evaluate condition, risk, and value of collections in order to determine appropriate preservation actions. The Spanish translation was done by Alan Haley and Amparo R. de Torres.

The software can be downloaded at http:// sunsite.Berkeley.EDU/CALIPR/download2. html. Copies are also available on disk from Jeanne Drewes, project director at Johns Hopkins University; phone: (410) 516-5486; e-mail: jdrewes@jhu.edu. ■
