ACRL is poised to hold its 9th National Conference in Detroit, April 8-11,1999A creative and hardworking National Conference Executive Committee, ably led by Charles Beard, has a host of learning opportunities planned.

Two keynote sessions will focus on topics of vital concern to academic librarians—copyright and scholarly communication. Jim Neal, director of libraries at Johns Hopkins University, and Pat Schroeder, president and CEO of the Association of American Publishers, will have a frank discussion of copyright issues of concern to librarians and publishers.

Michael Rosenzweig, a biologist at the University of Arizona, will examine alternative methods of scholarly publishing in the closing keynote entitled, “Reclaiming What We Own: Expanding Competition in Scholarly Publishing.” Rosenzweig is uniquely qualified to address this topic as he recently abandoned the thriving scholarly journal he founded 12 years ago because he believes the publisher had made it so expensive that many libraries and colleagues no longer can afford it (see page 160 for details).

We hope that you can join ACRL in Detroit for this exciting professional development opportunity. In addition to learning, there will be opportunities to network with your colleagues and have fun. To start the gastronomic delight, Bill Kane gives us a look at the finest eateries Detroit has to offer (page 173).

Also in this issue: Be an informed voter this spring. Read what candidates for ALA President Nancy Kranich and Jim Schmidt have in mind for the association (page 185). And help ACRL have a voice on the ALA Council by supporting the ACRL members running for Council (page 191).
