Marianna Tax Choldin,the C. Walter and Gerda B. Mortenson distinguished professor at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana- Champaign, is the third recipient of the Pushkin Medal for extraordinary contributions to Russian culture and education. Choldin has worked closely with Russian libraries and librarians for the past decade and addressed issues such as access to information, intellectual freedom, and the history of censorship.
Ann Hamilton,associate university librarian at Georgia Southern University, has been elected vice president/president-elect of the Southeastern Library Association for the 2001- 02 biennium. She recently completed her term as immediate past president of the Georgia Library Association.
Anne L. Highsmith,consortia systems coordinator for Texas A&M University Libraries, received the Distinguished Achievement in Librarianship Award. Presented annually by the Association of Former Students, the award recognizes exceptional contributions to the effective service and operations of the University Libraries and its affiliates throughout the Texas A&M University System. As systems coordinator, Highsmith oversees the integrated library systems for six of the libraries in the Texas
A&M system. She played a central role in the recent migration of the library consortia from NOTIS to Voyager. Highsmith has published extensively on technology applications and in the field of music. She served on the original TexShare Management Team, which resulted in a successful cooperative effort for the 52- member institutions of the Texas Council of State University Libraries (TCSUL).

Public Service Award from the Fund for the City of New York for extraordinary public service in the field of public education.
Appointments
Debbie Malonehas been appointed library director at Trexler Library at Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales. She is the ACRL- Delaware Valley Chapter president. Previously, Malone was head of technical services at Ursinu College.
Rona Ostrowhas been appointed chief librarian at Lehman College Library, CUNY. Ostrow came to Lehman College from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she served as assistant campus provost, and from Marymount Manhattan College, where she served as chief librarian. Prior to that she served as associate dean of libraries for public services at Adelphi University, associate director of the Graduate Business Resource Center at Baαich College, CUNY, and as a reference librarian at both the New York Public Library and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Harvey Varnetis now director of Providence College’s Phillips Memorial Library. Varnet, who was director of the libraries at Simmons College in Boston for the past three years, previously served as director of library services at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts (1993-96). He was the coordinator for the library, the Centre for Educational Technology, and the Computer Centre at the Sultan Qaboos University in Oman (1983-85). Among his other career highlights, Varnet was a Fulbright professor in educational technology at the University of Calabar in Nigeria for a year and served as both the director of the library and as the chief information services officer at Governors State University in Illinois (1985-93). Varnet is the current president of the New England Chapter of ACRL and has been elected to a twoyear term as president of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Fulbright Association.
Pat Weaveris now the director of the Campbell Library at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. She had been head librarian at Pennsylvania State Abington since 1997.
Lizabeth (Betsy) A. Wilson,associate director of libraries at the University of Washington (UW) since 1992, has been appointed director of university libraries at UW. “I am honored to have been selected to lead the UW Libraries into the 21st century,” Wilson said. “Education and research in this century will demand a complex, integrated, and increasingly flexible library. As the next director of the libraries, I am excited about shaping the library of the future for the university of the future.” Wilson was one of the creators of the award-winning UWired project, a collaboration that has helped educators and students incorporate technology and information literacy into teaching and learning. She also lead the Web initiative at the Libraries, which resulted in the creation of the Information Gateway. In addition to her position at UW, Wilson has served as executive director of the Cicognara Library Program since 1988, which is an international collaboration of the University of Illinois, the Vatican Libraiy, and the Samuel Kress Foundation. She has published widely on information literacy; teaching, learning, and technology; educational collaborations; and assessment and evaluation of library services. Wilson is a member of the Board of Trustees of OCLC and she has held numerous leadership positions in the ALA, including her current position as president of ACRL.

Retirements
Paul Shermanhas retired from his position as administrative and personnel services librarian at the New York City Technical College Library, a post he has held since 1976.
Louise Spainhas retired after 13 years as director of media services at the LaGuardia Community College Library. She will continue with the library as an adjunct.

Janice M. Wilsonhas retired as public services librarian at the California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles campus library.
Deaths
Madhavarao “Bali” Balachandran,62, faculty member at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign from 1972 to 1999 and head of the Commerce Library for 17 years, died September 29. He also served as coordinator of the Library-wide Social Sciences Division from 1985 to 1996. During his career, he authored, compiled, or edited seven major reference books covering the fields of regional and local business and economic statistics; business information sources in trade, banking, finance, and European business; indexes to reviews and guides to reference books; and a series of bibliographic guides identifying a core collection for academic business libraries.
Ilona Siren Caparros,former reference team leader at the Alexander Library and a member of the Rutgers University Libraries, died at her home in Elizabeth, New Jersey, shortly after starting her sabbatical leave. Caparros began her career at Rutgers in April 1973 as technical services librarian and subsequently served as microforms librarian from 1980 to 1989, when she joined Information Services at Alexander Library. Prior to joining Rutgers, Caparros worked at Widener Library at Harvard University, Plymouth State College Library, and at Newark State College (now Kean) Library.
Neal Harlow,92, former director of libraries at the University of British Columbia and dean of the Graduate School of Library Service at Rutgers University, has died. During his tenure as dean, Harlow planned a new building for the library school. Upon his retirement in 1969, he set to woi’k on researching the history and early maps of California’s coastal cities and published five books. His last book was a translation of Auguste Duhout-Cilly’s A Voyage to California, the Sandwich Islands, and Around the World in the Yeaι~s 1826-1829, which was published by the University of California Press in 1999. In 1989, the Historical Society of Southern California named him a fellow in recognition of his scholarship. ■
