BriceG. Hobrock, formerly assistant dean of libraries for administrative services at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has been named library dean at Kansas State University, Manhattan, effective February 1.

Hobrock has served as assistant library dean and a library faculty member at Nebraska since 1975. He also has been an associate director of the library at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a research chemist at Esso Research and Engineering Company.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University, a master’s degree from the University of Denver, and a Ph.D. degree from Kansas State. In addition to his administrative library work, he also has been a senior Fulbright Fellow to Brazil and a consultant to the Brunswick Corporation and to several colleges.

CharlesE. Kratz, head of public services for the University of Missouri-Kansas City Libraries, has been named associate college librarian at Rider College, Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He began his new duties in early January.

Kratz served as head of public services at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Libraries from September, 1980. He served in the assistant director’s capacity for one year between September, 1979, and September, 1980.

Before that, Kratz was head of public services for the University of New Haven from January, 1978, to August, 1979. He was also evening public services librarian at New Haven for two years.

Kratz earned his MLS degree from the University of Maryland in 1976. He also holds BA and MA degrees in history from the University of Notre Dame.

President of the Missouri Library Association/ Junior Member Round Table, Kratz has reviewed books for Library Journal and Choice Magazine. In addition, he wrote the proceedings for the academic library workshop of the 80th Annual Meeting on Cooperative Collection Development, Missouri Library Association.

Elvin E. Strowdhas been appointed university librarian and director of the Perkins Library System at Duke University, Durham, North

Carolina, effective January 1. He has been acting librarian for the past year, following Connie Dunlap’s retirement.

Strowd joined the Duke library staff in 1955 as head of circulation. In 1970 he was named assistant university librarian for circulation and departmental libraries, and in 1978, assistant university librarian for public services.

Elvin E. Strowd

Strowd has served in various capacities with the North Carolina Library Association, having been director of the Executive Board and recently chairman of the College and University Section. For six years he was advertising manager for The Southeastern Librarian.

He has held positions in acquisitions and circulation at Wilson Library at UNC-Chapel Hill, was assistant field director of the American Red Cross at Fort Gordon, Georgia, from 1951-53, and in 1950-51 was an instructor of history at Guilford College in Greensboro.

He received a Council on Library Resources Fellowship for 1970-71 and the Durham Savoyard’s distinguished service award in 1973 for services as producer and member of the technical crew.

Strowd holds a bachelor’s degree from Guilford College, as well as a Master’s degree in history and a BS in library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

WendyS. Engel has been appointed reference librarian at the Medical Library of Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.

Frank Fabryhas been appointed library conservator at Case Western University Libraries, Cleveland, Ohio.

Judith Felstonis now archivist at the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, Philadelphia.

Lynn Wilcoxhas been appointed science catalog librarian at the Mugar Memorial Library, Boston University.

Nadeyzhda Zilperhas been appointed Slavic bibliographer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

RETIREMENTS

LeslieW. Dunlap retired on December 31 as dean of libraiy administration at the University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa City, after 23 years of service. Dunlap came to Iowa in 1958 as director of libraries and professor of libraiy science. His previous positions included associate director of the University of Illinois Library, 1951-58; librarian of the University of British Columbia, 1949-51; assistant chief of the Manuscripts Division of the Library of Congress, 1948-49; assistant chief of the General Reference and Bibliography Division of the Library of Congress, 1945-48; and head of the Acquisition Department at the University of Wisconsin Library, Madison.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Oregon in 1933, Dunlap earned three additional degrees at Columbia University: a master s in American literature (1938), a bachelor’s in library science (1939), and a Ph.D. in American history (1944).

A life member of ALA, Dunlap has also served as president of the Iowa Library Association in 1968-69. In 1970 President Nixon appointed him a member of the first National Commission on Libraries and Information Science for a term of six years.

He has contributed articles to many professional journals, and in 1976 co-edited a monograph, The Publication of American Historical Manuscripts. He was also project director for the 2-volume Wallace Papers (1975), and editor of Readings in Library History (1972), American Historical Societies 1790-1860 (1944), and the Letters of Willis Gaylord Clark and Lewis Gaylord Clark (1940).

John P. Herling,chief librarian at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, retired on February 1.

A. Kathryn Oller, associate dean of the School of Library and Information Science at Drexel University, Philadelphia, since 1969, will retire on June 30, 1982.

A member of the Drexel faculty since 1952, Oller was promoted to associate professor in 1956 and to professor in 1968. She served as acting dean of the school in 1967-68 and was named to the new post of associate dean in 1969.

She holds an MLS from the University of Illinois (1951) and a doctorate from the University of Michigan (1963). Oiler’s primary teaching interests have been in reference resources and services, particularly for the humanities and social sciences, and in government documents. Her 30 years of service constitute the longest tenure of any faculty member in the school since its formation in 1892.

Oller began her professional career in the Huntingdon County (Pa.) Library, and later worked for the Juniata College Library, the Adams County (Pa.) Public Library, and the Pennsylvania State Library before entering the field of libraiy education.

John K. Musgravehas retired after 15 years of service as Southeast Asian bibliographer and Head of the Southeast Asia Division at The University of Michigan Library, Ann Arbor.

A. Kathryn Oller

Before assuming his position at Michigan, Musgrave was curator of the Southeast Asia Collection at the Yale University Libraiy. He served nationally on many committees, including the Executive Committee of the Southeast Asian Microform Project and the Committee on Research Materials on Southeast Asia, Association for Asian Studies. He also served as a consultant for the development of Southeast Asia collections at other universities.

Musgrave earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, majoring in history. He also received a master’s degree from Harvard with a concentration in history and Far Eastern languages, and pursued graduate studies at Yale University and the University of Rangoon. Musgrave’s master’s degree in library science was earned at Simmons College.

MadelineC. Yourman retired in February from the position of deputy chief librarian at Brooklyn College.

DEATHS

Norman L. Kilpatrick,former director of libraries at Florida State University and associate director of libraries at the University of Iowa, died on January 27. Kilpatrick, who also held a position at Kraus Periodicals in New York, had retired in 1969.

Lewis W. Morse,professor of law emeritus and former law librarian at the Cornell Law School from 1935 to 1965, died on January 25. A member of the Cornell faculty since 1931, Morse had retired in 1969. He had also served as associate dean for alumni affairs and placement at the law school.

KatherineP. Rossi, associate librarian and coordinator of the Technical Services Department at the F. Franklin Moon Library, College of Environmental Science and Forestry, State University of New York, Syracuse, died on February 6. She had been at the Moon Library since 1966. ■■
