Neal Benezra, a curator in the department of 20th-century painting and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, has been appointed chief curator at the Smithsonian Institution’s Hirshhom Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., effective in early 1992. Benezra joined the Art Institute in 1985 as an associate curator then became a full curator two years later. Before that he was curator at the Des Moines Art Center in Iowa. A native of Northern California, Benezra earned simultaneous bachelor’s degrees in art history and political science at the University of California at Berkeley in 1976, and a doctorate in art history from Stanford University in 1983. He has published widely, won a number of fellowships, and served on numerous panels and advisory committees (for the National Endowment for the Humanities, Sculpture Chicago, and other organizations).
Scott Drone-Silvers has been named director of the Learning Resource Center at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Illi- nois. Drone-Silvers re- cently earned his MLS at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and has a bachelor’s in secondary education from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He is a member of ALA, the Special Library Asso- ciation, and Phi Alpha Theta, a national honor society for history.

David L. Easterbrook has been appointed curator of the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern University, effective December 1991. Since 1986 Easterbrook has been principal bibliographer at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and serving as bibliographer for professional studies there for seven years. Before that he served as African studies area specialist at Indiana University and African bibliographer at Syracuse University. Easterbrook hholds a B.A. in history from Kalamazoo College and an MLS from the State University of New York at Albany. He has been an active member of ALA, ACRL, and the African Studies Association serving as chair of the Asian and African Section of ACRL and chair of the Archives-Libraries Committee of the African Stud- ies Association. The author of many publications, Easterbrook was the recipient of the 1989 F ulbright Award for study at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.
Sallie H. Ellison has been named director of Purdy/Kresge Library and Media Services at Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit, Michigan. Ellison joined WSU as assistant director of the Library in 1989, then was appointed acting director in 1990. Before that, she was man- ager of information ser- vices for the Industrial Technology Institute in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and research librarian for General Motors Re- search Laboratories. She received her MLS from Drexel University and her bachelor’s in political sci- ence from Fisk Univer- sity. Ellison is a member of ALA and the Special Libraries Association. She is a past-president of the Michigan Database Users Group and currently serves on the Committee for Social Issues of the American Council of Research Libraries and on WSU’s Minority Faculty Host Committee.
Sallie H. Ellison
Debra Gilchrist has been named director of the Pierce College Library in Tacoma, Washington. She previously worked as reference librarian and head of bibliographic instruction at Pacific Lutheran University Library, and in reference and bibliographic instruction at South Dakota University Library.
Julie Johnson McGowan, associate director of the School of Medicine Library at the University of South Carolina for the past 13 years, has been appointed director of the Dana Medical Library at the University of Vermont, Burlington, effective October 1, 1991. McGowan has also worked as coordinator of technical services in the School of Medicine Library at the University of South Caro- lina, and on the staffs of the University of South Alabama and the Tampa Public Library. She re- ceived her bachelor’s degree from Randolph Ma- con Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia; her MLS from the University of Maryland; her master’s in art history specializing in medical iconography and her doctorate in higher education administra- tion from the University of South Carolina.
Richard W. Meyer, associate library director at Clemson University, has been appointed director of the Elizabeth Coates Maddux Library at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas. Meyer earned a B.A. in library science and B.S. in chemistry from the University of Mis- souri; an MLS from the University of lllinois; and an M.A. in economics from Clemson Univer- sity. His previous posi- tions include assistant li- brarian at the Savannah River Laboratory of E.I. DuPont de Nemours Company in Aiken, South Carolina; assistant library director for technical services at the University of Dallas; and director of library technical services at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. Active in the University Libraries Section of ACRL, Meyer has published articles on automation and manage- ment in various academic journals. He is a founding board member of the Higher Education Network Association in South Carolina.
Richard W. Meyer
Laurene E. Zaforozhetz has been appointed director of the Noel Memorial Library at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, effective October 1, 1991. Zaporozhetz holds a B.A. from Michigan State University, an MLS from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. in education from the University of Oregon. Her career includes serving most recently as director of the Tampa Campus Library at the University of South Florida and positions at the Massachusetts Bureau of Library Extension, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the University of Oregon, and Bowling Green State University. Active in ACRL, Zaporozhetz has held many committee positions and was chair of the Education and Behavioral Sciences Section. She is currently a member of the Board of Examiners for the National Council for the Accreditation for Teacher Education, and is an active speaker and author in areas of the behavioral sciences and customer service theory and application.

Richard M. Dougherty, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Information and Library Studies, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa in recognition of his scholarship, leadership, and service to the international community of libraries by Purdue University at its commencement in May. Dougherty is past-president of ALA.
Shirley Fitzgibbons, associate professor in the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University, has been elected chair of the International Federation of Library Associations’(IFLA) Section on Children’s Libraries. An invited speaker at IFLA’s 57th Council and General Conference in Moscow in August, her presentation focused on the factors that contribute to reading motivation among middle grade school children.
James D. Folts, Larry Hackman, and Judy Hohmann of the New York State Archives and Records Administration were the recipients of the Society of American Archivists’ Philip M. Hamer/ Elizabeth Hamer Kegan Award for the program of activities they initiated to increase public awareness of the records of the New York Supreme Court. The centerpiece of their work is a history and finding aid titled Dueltj and Constantly Kept: A History of the New York Supreme Court, 1691-1847, and. an Inventory of Its Records, written by Folts, and published jointly by the New York State Archives and the New York State Court of Appeals. Hackman is the director of the New York State Archives and Records Administration, Folts is an associate archivist there, and Hohmann is a senior public and education program specialist. The award was presented in Philadelphia in September.
Charles A. Hamaker, assistant dean for collection development at the Louisiana State University Libraries in Baton Rouge, was presented with the Alumni Award of the School of Library and Informatíon Sciences of Brigham Young University. The award was given in recognition of Hamaker’s service to libraries in collection development and to acknowledge service that exemplifies professional and personal excellence.
Barbara Haner, science reference librarian at the University of California, Riverside, was named the winner of the Geoscience Information Society’s (GIS) 1991 Best Paper Award for her paper “Guidebook Citation Patterns in the Geologic Journal Literature: A Comparison between 1985 and 1967” (GIS Proceedings, volume 20, pp. 159-69, 1990). She was presented with the award at the GIS annual conference in San Diego in October.
Brian Land, director of the Ontario Legislative Library (OLL) and member of the University of Toronto (UT) Faculty of Library and Information Science, was awarded the Canadian Association of Special Libraries and Information Services’ 1991 Award for Special Librarianship. Land was cited for his work as executive director of the OLL, for his work with the Association of Parliamentary Librarians in Canada, and for his reference source, The Directory of Associations in Canada. Land received his B.A., M.A., BLS, and MLS from the University of Toronto. After holding positions with the Toronto Public Library and the University of Toronto Library, where he rose to the rank of associate chief librarian, Land became director of the UT School of Library Science in 1964.
Mary Bobinson, a student in the Wayne State University (WSU) Library Science Program, was awarded this year’s Baker & Taylor/Michigan Library Association (MLA) Grass Roots award. The cash prize of $250 funded her attendance at the MLA conference in October. Another WSU student, Joanne Venetos Dallis, was chosen as an award alternate.
Debora Shaw, associate professor at the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science, has been appointed associate editor of Hypermedia, a leading international research journal devoted to practical and theoretical developments in hypertext, hypermedia, interactive multi- media systems, and related areas. It is published three times a year by Taylor Graham of London and Los Angeles. Shaw is currently director-at-large of the American Society for Information Science and brings to her new assignment considerable research experience in interface design, information retrieval, and database management.
Bobbie Smith, head librarian and coordinator of libraries at Long Beach City College, California, has been elected the 1991-92 president of the Board of Education of the 75,000-student Long Beach Uni- fied School District. She was elected to the govern- ing board of the school district in 1988, and is the first African-American member and president in the district’s 106-year history. Smith earned her bachelor’s degree from Eureka College, Illinois, and her MLS from the University of Illinois. She is a member of ALA and the California Library As- sociation; past-president of the Academic Senate and of the City College Teachers Association; a member of the Long Beach City College Planning Council; and served for four years on the California Teachers Association State Council. An active life member of the NAACP and executive board member of the Long Beach branch, Smith is also a past executive board member and parliamen- tarian of the National Council of Negro Women. She is the recipient of many awards and honors including the Mary McLeod Bethune Award from the National Council of Negro Women, a U.S. Navy award and citation as a role model and pacesetter, a National Education Association Award for signifi- cant contributions to national political action on behalf ofpubliceducation, and the Masonic Lodges Meritorious Service to Public Education Award.

Kathy Tezla, social sciences coordinator for collections and technical services in the General Libraries of Emory University, has received a Fulbright scholar grant to support her research in the Szechenyi National Library in Budapest, Hungary. Tezla will spend three months this fall consulting the extensive collection of American-Hungar- ian immigrant newspapers to complete an edition of documents dealing with female immigrants who came to the U.S. from Hungary between 1895 and 1920. The Corvina Publishing House in Budapest will publish the work in English translation.
William D. Walker, associate director for the New York Public Library Science, Industry and Business Library, has been named Astor Fellow for 1991-92 by library president Timothy S. Healy. During his tenure, Walker will develop a public service model to meet the increasingly sophisticated information needs of the scientific and business communities. The model will specifically address the innovations in information technology in the next century. Walker’s experience in the field includes positions as director of the Medical Library Center of New York and head of information services at the University of Illinois Medical Center. He holds an MLS from the University of Michigan and is a member of Beta Phi Mu, the national libraiy science honor society. He has published numerous articles on library technology. The Astor Fellowship was established in 1982 through a $1 million gift from the Vincent Astor Foundation and supports the development of special projects and innovative programs.
Ann Baker Ward, head of the Interlibrary Center at the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries in Raleigh, has been selected to participate in the university’s Language/Cultural/Professional/Development Program, a collaborative project of the U.S. Agency for International Development, Florida A&M University, and NCSU aimed at providing faculty with an opportunity to gain knowledge of another culture and competency in another language. Ward will spend three months, from January to March 1992, in Togo, a country in western Africa, receiving intensive French-language instruction and attending lectures on U.S. assistance efforts for economic and social development. Her participation in the program will help her learn more about the information resources needed to support research in tropical areas.
Nancy Williamson, professor in the University of Toronto Library and Information Science program, was honored as the Distinguished Academic Librarian of the Year for 1991 by the Canadian Association of College and University Libraries at its annual meeting in Montreal in June. Williamson was cited for her achievements as a teacher and as a researcher in classification and subject access to information in online retrieval systems. She recently chaired the 5th International Study Conference on Classification Research in Toronto, and is currently chair of the Committee on Classification Research of the International F ederation for Information and Documentation. She received her B.A. from Mount Allison University, a BLS and MLS from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University.

Retirements
Carolyn Bucknall, assistant director for col- lection development at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin Libraries, retired at the end of September. Bucknall began her career at the UT Library in the early 1950s as a clerical assis- tant, then worked as a half-time library assis- tant, and as a serials cata- loger. In 1961 she joined the University of Wash- ington, Seatde, staff as a serials cataloger, then joined the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, staff as head of serials acquisition and catalog- ing. In 1965 she accepted the position of head of the Acquisitions Depart- ment at the State University of New York at Binghamton. She returned to UT in 1967 as chief acquisitions librarian and was appointed to her most recent position in 1975. Bucknall received her B.A. in 1953 and her MLS in 1960, both from UT. She has served as chair of the Chief Collection Develop- ment Officers of Large Research Libraries, vice chair of ALA's Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Resources Section, current chair of ALCTS’s Collection Management and Development Section, and has served on numerous other committees and subcommittees of ALA and ACRL.
Carolyn Bucknall
James F. Govan, university librarian at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has announced his intention to retire in June of 1992.
Dorothy Louise Hagedorn, associate university librarian at Tulane University’s Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, New Orleans, retired recently after 20 years of service.
Jack Leister, head librarian at the Institute of Governmental Studies Library at the University of California, Berkeley, retired in September after more than 30 years of service. On the Berkeley campus Leister served on numerous library standing, advisory, and ad hoc committees and task forces. He served as statewide president for the Librarians Association of the University of California in 1980-81, and was an active participant in the Affiliated Librarians’ Administrative Group. Leister was especially active in the Special Libraries Association (SLA), serving on the Board of Directors for five years, on the Finance Committee, as conference planning chair of the Honolulu conference in 1979, and as president of the local chapter in 1976- 77. In 1987 Leister was named one of the first Fellows of SLA, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the association and to special libraries. The author of bibliographic works in the field of state and local government, Leister also served on the editorial board of Greenwood Press’ Index to Current Urban Documents. He was also instrumental in the inception of Statistical Reference Index, a major index to non-federal statistical datapublished by private organizations and public agencies in the U.S. In recognition of all his accomplishments, Leister was awarded the university's Distinguished Service Award upon his retirement.
Mary Pound, publications coordinator at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin Libraries, retired in August. She began working at UT in 1955 as physics librarian.
Wesley Schram, reference librarian at Wayne State University, Detroit, for 22 years, retired in January 1991, but has stayed on in a part-time capacity. He is a member of ALA and ACRL, and has held leadership roles in the Southeast Michigan League of Research Libraries and the Bibliographic Instruction Committee (COBI).
Ruth Taylor, librarian at the Shiffman Medical Library of Wayne State University, Detroit, has announced that she will retire in February 1992. A Shiffman employee since 1969, Taylor served the library in many capacities, including director of the library from 1981-83 and adjunct faculty member to the Library Science Program. She has been an active member of the Metropolitan Detroit Medical Library Group, the Medical Library Association, the Michigan Database Users Group, the Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association, and the Midwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association.
Deaths
J. Travis Leach, serials acquisitions librarian at the University of Arizona (UA), Tucson, died in September. He had worked at the library for 19 years. He was first hired as a graduate student assistant in the Catalog Department in 1970, spent a year working at the University of California at Davis, then began his tenure at UA in 1972 as a catalog librarian. He received his B.A. in 1958 and a Ph.D. in 1962 from the University of Louisville, and his MLS from UA in 1971.
Manuel Dennis Lopez, librarian in the University Libraries of the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNYAB), died in September at the age of 57. A member of the SUNYAB staff since 1964, Lopez served as curator of library exhibitions, reference librarian at Lockwood Library, and head of the Architecture and Planning Library. His contributions were recognized in 1978 with the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship. Of special importance to Lopez was the support of the university’s large international student population, and his orientation to the libraries for international students won national recognition and was featured in C&RL in 1983. An accomplished scholar in librarianship, Lopez recently received notification that his book Chinese Drama: An Annotated Bibliography had been published by Scarecrow Press. He was also the author of New York: A Guideto Information and Reference Sources (1987), and served as the coordinating editor of the 1984 William Hein publication of the Catalog of the Polish Room Collection: Lockwood Menwrial Library. Lopez earned his B.A. from Clark University and his MLS from Drexel University.
Judy Morton, former head of the Engineering Libraiy at the University of California, Berkeley, died in October. Morton joined the library’s staff in 1949 and retired in 1981. She received her MLS from UC Berkeley and served in World War II as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, WR.
Jane Pairo, manager of SOLINET’s Preservation Program, died in October in Philadelphia while attending the Society of American Archivists Conference. Pairo joined SOLINET in January 1990. Before that she had served as assistant state archivist in Virginia and had more than 20 years experience in education, archives, preservation, and management. She earned her MLS from Catholic University and her M .A. in education from the University of Virginia.
David Rosenbaum, former reference librarian at Wayne State University (WSU), died in August. Rosenbaum joined the WSU Libraries in 1969 and retired in 1987. He remained at the Purdy/Kresge Library on a part-time basis until December 1990. A frequent contributor to library journals throughout his career, Rosenbaum was also a part-time instructor for the WSU Library Science Program from 1966-75.
Lawrence Zweizig, reference librarian at the ALA Headquarters Library in Chicago, died in September of Hodgkin’s disease at the age of 24. Zweizig joined the ALA staff in 1991. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Washington and an MLS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His father is Douglas Zweizig, a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin- Madison School of Library and Information Science. ■ ■
