It’s hard to believe that summer is over and a new academic year is already in swing. If summer is a time for contemplation, fall is ultimately a time for taking action.
The 2003 ALA Annual Conference seems a world away right now, but members and staff alike are busy working on new projects and implementing new initiatives that came out of our meetings in Atlanta.
For those of you who weren’t able to attend the conference this year, or who were there but missed some programs you were interested in, you can learn about key topics covered by reading member reports on a number of programs (page 556 ). As always, a selection of programs are available for sale on audiocassette as well (see page 558).
For an overview of where we’re headed this fiscal year, the actions taken by the ACRL Board of Directors at the June meeting are also in this issue (page 568).
At the end of the Atlanta conference, we officially welcomed Helen Spalding as the new ACRL president. She has selected “New Realities, New Relationships” as the 2002-2003 presidential theme. In the first installment of the “New Realities, New Relationships” column (page 580), Helen shares her plans for the presidential year and illustrates how new realities and new relationships really do shape us and the work we do.
As you start thinking of the year ahead and the ACRL programs and projects that speak to you, remember to consider recognizing a library or librarian that you admire by nominating candidates for the variety of ACRL awards described on page 588.
