Pam Spiegel

Charles E. Lee,former di- rector of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, has been named the recipient of the National His- torical Publications and Records Commission’s (NHPRC) Distinguished Ser- vice Award for 1994. Lee has been an active leader in the Society of American Archi- vists, the National Associa- tion of State Archives and Records Administrators, and the National Conference of

State Historic Preservation Officers. He was rec- ognized for his exemplary work as archivist, educator, administrator, advocate, and mem- ber of NHPRC.

Ruth K. Seidman,head of Engineering and Science Libraries at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the new editor of the quar- terly journal Science & Technology Libraries. Seidman previously served as librarian for the New England Region of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and as director of the Air Force Geophysics Labo- ratory Research Library. She said of her appointment, “I am most enthusiastic about assuming the editorship of Science & Technology Libraries at a time when libraries, as well as the re- search establishment and the academic com- munity, are facing serious challenges.”

Ruth K. Seidman

Victoria Steele,acting associate dean for library advancement and exter- nal relations and head of special collections at the University of Southern California Libraries, is a 1995–1996 Fulbright Scholar to the United Kingdom. She will be affiliated with the library at University College

London, where she will be working with senior library officials to create a develop- ment program for the li- brary. Beginning her resi- dency in the fall of 1995, Steele will be the last librar- ian to receive the Fulbright Commission’s United King- dom Librarian Award due to the program’s discontin- uation. Steele is the author, with Stephen D. Elder, of Becoming a Fundraiser: The Principles and Practice of Library Development (ALA, 1992), which recently won the G.K. Hall Award for Library Literature.

Appointments

Patricia Senn Breivikhas been appointed dean of the University Libraries at Wayne State

University, effective June 1. Breivik will head the Wayne State University Libraries, the Library and Information Science Pro- gram, and the Wayne State University Press. Since 1990 Breivik has served as associate vice- president for information resources at Towson State University in Mary- land. Before that she served for over ten years as director of the Auraria Library at the Univer- sity of Colorado-Denver; dean of library ser- vices at Sangamon State University; and assis- tant dean of the Pratt Institute Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Profession- ally active, Breivik currently serves as vice-presi- dent/president-elect of ACRL and chair of the National Forum on Information Literacy.

Anne Buckhas been appointed university librarian at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. She previously served as university librarian at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, developed and directed the Bellcore Library Net- work, and was group su- pervisor at AT&T Bell Laboratories. She has also been a public library director, consultant, and trustee. A member of the Highsmith Press Editorial Advisory Board, Buck is also treasurer of the American Society for In- formation Science (ASIS), vice-chair of the Engineering Information Foundation, and director of Engineering Information, Inc.

Patricia Senn Breivik

Mary W. Ghikashas been named associate executive director for member programs and services at ALA in Chicago. Ghikas most re- cently served as executive director of the West- ern New York Library Resources Council in Buffalo. She will head one of two new depart- ments developed by ALA executive director Elizabeth Martinez. She will coordinate the work of all divisions, conference services, member- ship development, chapter relations, round tables, and the awards program.

Noreen Halehas been named ACRL’s associ- ate director for special programs and advancement. Announcing the appointment, ACRL ex- ecutive director Althea Jenkins said, “With more than 20 years as faculty and librarian in higher education and manage- ment, and training con- sultant for numerous nonprofit organizations, Noreen Hale will make a major contribution in helping the association achieve its goals.” Prior to joining ACRL, Hale was an independent consultant specializing in program design, new product development, and curriculum review for such clients as Inland Steel, AYCO Corporation, and Loyola University. She has held senior positions in management, training, curriculum development, and image relations at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke Medical Center, National Louis University, and MacNeal Hospital. She holds an M.A. in government from the University of San Francisco, and an MLS and Ed.D. degree in adult education from Indiana University.

Noreen Hale

Frederick M. Martzhas been appointed director of library systems at Yale University. Martz joined the Yale library in 1970, became head of the Circulation Department in 1978, and was later named senior database administrator in the Library Systems Office. He has figured prominently in efforts to develop and implement automated systems for the library, including Geac and NOTIS. He received his B.A. from Yale, his M.A. from the University of Virginia, and his MLS from Columbia University.

Steve Bischoffhas been appointed systems librarian at Connecticut College, New London.

Janice Braunhas been named special collections librarian and director of the Mills Center for the Book at Mills College, Oakland, California.

Ruth C. Carterhas been promoted to assistant director for automated and technical services at the University of Pittsburgh Libraries.

Bert Chapmanhas been appointed government publications coordinator at Purdue University.

Tomalee Doanhas joined the Kresge Business Administration Library at the University of Michigan as access services manager and reference librarian.

Dana M. Edgeis the new reference librarian and coordinator for interlibrary loan at Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, North Carolina.

Rheena Elmorehas been appointed assistant undergraduate librarian at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

Jody Footeis now assistant education and psychology librarian at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

Beth Goodmanis now systems librarian at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Retirements

Mary Fortney,map librarian in the Government Publications and Maps Department at Northwestern University, retired in mid-March.

Irene B. Hoadley,director of the Sterling C. Evans Library Capital Campaign, Texas A&M University, retired at the end of 1994 after two years in that position. She had served as director of the Sterling C. Evans Library from 1974 to 1992. Hoadley’s career included positions as head of the Circulation Department at Kansas State University, and librarian for general administration/research and assistant director of libraries (administrative services) at Ohio State University. Professionally active, Hoadley served two terms on the ALA Council, as president of the OCLC Users Council, and in various capacities in AMIGOS, ARL, and several state library asso- ciations. Within ACRL she has served on the Publications Committee, the Standards and Ac- creditation Committee, the Academic Status Committee, and the College & Research Libraries Editorial Board. She was named ACRL’s Academic/Research Librar- ian of the Year in 1994.

Irene B. Hoadley

Richard D. Johnson,director of libraries at the State University of New York (SUNY), Col- lege at Oneonta, retired in December. He had held the post since 1973. Before that he held library positions at the University of Chicago, Stanford University, and the Claremont Colleges. A member of the ALA Publishing Committee, Johnson also chaired the planning and advi- sory committees for the third edition of Books for College Libraries, and chaired the editorial advisory board for Booklist

(1988-1990). Active in ACRL, Johnson chaired the program committee for its first national con- ference in 1978 and coedited the conference proceedings, was editor of College & Research Libraries from 1974 to 1980, and was given leave from SUNY-Oneonta to serve as acting editor of Choice in 1982. He was named ACRL’s Aca- demic or Research Librarian of the Year in 1984.

Richard D. Johnson

Janet Paulkrecently retired as library human resources officer from the General Libraries of Emory University, Atlanta, after 20 years on the library staff.

Carol Winberryretired last summer as head of science at the Thomas Cooper Library, University of South Carolina (USC), Columbia, and was named librarian emeritus. Winberry received her MLS from Emory University. Before joining USC in 1974, she worked at the University of Michigan, Colorado State University, the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Library, and the South Carolina State Library.

Deaths

Thelma Brackett,former New Hampshire state librarian (1933–1942) and University of New Hampshire librarian (1942–1962), died last summer. Brackett first worked in Yureka, California, delivering books on horseback to rangers in the mountains of Siskeyou County.

Elizabeth Futas,director of the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island (URI), Kingston, died February 6 while attending the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia. A graduate of Brooklyn College and the University of Minnesota, Futas received her Ph.D. from Rutgers University. She taught in the library science program at Emory University before her appointment at URI. Active in ALA, Futas served on the Council and the Executive Board and was involved in many ALA activities including the Social Responsibilities Round Table and the Feminist Task Force. She was past editor of RQ and the author of several books and numerous articles. At the ALA conference in Philadelphia Futas was chosen to receive the Beta Phi Mu Award for distinguished service to education for librarianship.

Miss Roy Land,professor emeritus and 47-year veteran of the University of Virginia (UV) Library, died last October. Land worked in circulation at UV from 1930 until her retirement in 1977. Active in the profession, Land served as president of the Virginia Library Association, treasurer and board member of the Southeastern Library Association, secretary of ACRL’s University Library Section, and ALA Council member. In 1959-1960 she served as a consultant for the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia and visited libraries in Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Taiwan.

William Andrew Moffett,director of the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, died February 20 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 62. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Moffett received his undergraduate degree from Davidson College, his M.A. and Ph.D. in his- tory from Duke Univer- sity, and his MLS from Simmons College. Before joining the Huntington, he served as assistant professor of history at Alma College (1964–68) and at the University of Massachusetts (1968–74), director of libraries for the State University of New York/College at Potsdam (1974–79), and the Azariah Smith Root director of libraries at Oberlin College (1979–90).

Moffett was an active member of ALA’s Committee on Intellectual Freedom, the Duke University Libraries Board of Advisors, and the UCLA Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences Advisory Committee. He was also active in ACRL, serving as its president from 1989 to 1990. The recipient of many professional honors, Moffett was named ACRL’s Aca-

WUlíam A. Moffett demic or Research Librarian of the Year in 1993. That same year he received ALA’s Immroth Memorial Award for Intellectual Freedom, the Special Libraries Association’s Professional Librarian of 1993 Award, and an honorary doctor of laws degree from the SUNY/Potsdam. The Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science gave Moffett its Alumni Achievement Award in 1994.

Moffett is probably best known, professionally, for giving access to the Huntington's photographic archive of the Dead Sea Scrolls to qualified scholars in 1991, breaking the 40-year scholarly monopoly on Scrolls study. At the time Moffett said, “When you free the Scrolls ýou free the scholars. Opening access to the Dead Sea Scrolls is an affirmation of the mission of research libraries: not merely to store and preserve information, but to make it available in as free and unfrettered a way as possible.”

Elma Cole Pamplin,who retired from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as a reference librarian in 1976, died in January at the age of 79. She held many jobs before joining the CIA in 1953, where she also worked as an intelligence analyst.
