RLG publishes proceedings of digital symposium

The Research Libraries Group (RLG) has published “Digital Imaging Technology for Preservation,” the proceedings of a symposium held at Cornell University in March 1994. More than 90 preservation and information professionals from RLG libraries attended the two-day symposium to consider both the potential and reality of “digital preservation.” In addition to presentations by speakers, the symposium included an “Imaging Exposition” by vendors of digital imaging systems/applications and participants in library digital imaging projects.

Copies of the 139-page, paperbound symposium proceedings are available from RLG for $20.00 each, plus $8.00 shipping and handling. Orders may be sent to the Distribution Services Center, The Research Libraries Group, Inc., 1200 Villa Street, Mountain View, CA 94041-1100; fax: (415) 964-0943; e-mail: bl.dsc@rlg.stanford.edu.

CCAHA receives NEH grant for workshops and surveys

The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia has received a three-year, $210,117 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support two new workshops and to subsidize a conservation survey program. One workshop will cover environmental monitoring and the other will cover handling oversized architectural records. Each will be offered six times during the three years in various locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. The overview con- servation surveys are de- signed for nonprofit institu- tions which have paper- based collections of long- term value to the study and understanding of the hu- manities.

The center is currently soliciting applications for the limited number of con- servation surveys. The sur- vey consists of a one-day site visit by a member of the

CCAHA staff and a report featuring observations and recommendations. Cost to the institu- tion is $300, plus travel expenses for the sur- veyor. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and institutions will be selected throughout the year.

For more information, contact Virgilia Rawnsley, Director of Preservation Services, CCAHA, 264 South 23rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103; phone: (215) 545-0613; fax: (215) 735-9313.

UC-Berkeley investigates digital encoding of finding aids

The Berkeley Finding Aid Project at the Library of the University of California, Berkeley, has been investigating the best methods for digital encoding of the finding aids used by special collections, archives, and pictorial collections. Project staff have begun creation of a 1,000 finding aid database using a Standard Generalized Markup Language Document Type Definition (SGML DTD) prototype standard. Approximately 20 other institutions are participating with Berkeley in this project. For more information, contact Daniel V. Pitti, librarian for advanced technologies projects, University of California, Berkeley; e-mail: dpitti@library. berkeley.edu.
