About the cover

Highlighted on this month’s cover are two of ten panels from the Diego Rivera mural, “Pan American Unity,” which is owned and housed by the City College of San Francisco (CCSF). The mural originated during the “Art in Action” project hosted by the 1939-40 Golden Gate International Exposition held on Treasure Island. At 1,800 square feet, it was Rivera’s largest single-standing mural. Painted al fresco, in the manner of the Italian Renaissance masters, the mural incorporates the fusion between the history of Latin America and the United States. The panels shown include images such as the Golden Gate Bridge; Coatlicue, Aztec goddess of death and the earth metamorphosing from an Indian woman into a machine; artist Frida Kahlo, wearing traditional dress and earrings given to her by Pablo Picasso; and film star Paulette Godard. CCSF has developed “The Diego Rivera Mural Project,” which includes curriculum materials centered around this unique work of art. For complete information, visit www.riveramural.org. This “back to school” issue of C&RL News will keep you up-to-date on the projects and initiatives that came out of the ALA Annual Conference and informed by a number of engaging articles.

Earlier this year, ACRL began gathering information from its members and leaders to assist in crafting a new strategic plan. The association expects to have a new plan for the future solidified by early 2004. Input from ACRL members is an important aspect of the strategic planning process. If you’d like to assist ACRL by making your voice heard, please participate in our online member survey this month on the ACRL Web site, www.acrl.org.

At the close of this year’s Annual Conference, Tyrone H. Cannon was officially welcomed as the 2003-04 ACRL president. As president, he will play a significant role in shepherding the association’s strategic planning process. His article “Partnerships and connections: The learning community as knowledge builders,” which bears the name of his presidential theme, provides more insight into the strategic planning process, in addition to further exploring his theme and goals for the upcoming year.

The Board of Directors’ Actions from their meetings at the ALA Annual Conference can be found on page 518 and provide an overview of the projects, programs, and initiatives that ACRL will be working on in the coming year. To learn more about key topics covered at the Toronto conference, don’t miss the reports on conference programs that also appear in this issue (p. 509).

Also included in this issue are two documents approved by the ACRL Board of Directors at Annual Conference, “Characteristics of programs of information literacy that illustrate best practices: A guideline” (p. 544) and the Scholarly Communication Committee’s “Principles and strategies for the reform of scholarly communication (p. 526).”
