Ann-Christe Galloway

John Buschman,librarian and department chair at Rider University Libraries, presents an examination of the library field and its relationship to the democratic public sphere in his book, Dismantling the Public Sphere: Situating and Sustaining Librarianship in the Age of the New Public Philosophy (West Port, Connecticut: Greenwood Publishing Group, 2003). Buschman, who joined Rider in 1988, is editor of Critical Approaches to Information Technology in Librarianship: Foundations and Applications (Greenwood Press)— for which he wrote three chapters. He is a member of ACRL and the Progressive Librarians Guild and coeditor of the journal Progressive Librarian.

Trudi Bellardo Hahn

Trudi Bellardo Hahn,manager of Library User Education Services and adjunct pro- fessor at the College of Information Studies, University of Maryland, College Park, has co- authored a new book, A History of Online

Information Services, 1963-1976,with Charles P. Bourne, a pioneer in information retrieval services. Bourne was formerly director of the Institute of Library Re- search at the University of California and vice president of DIALOG Information Services. The new book provides a rich narrative of the early development of online information retrieval systems and services, from 1963 to 1976—a period important to anyone who uses a search engine, online catalog, or large database.

William Hannafordhas been awarded two Fulbrights. He will spend six weeks in the fall 2003 as a Fulbright senior specialist in Thesssaloniki, Greece, at the University of Macedonia, consulting and giving a seminar in management and leadership. In the spring, he is slated to spend six months at Moldova State University as a Fulbright Scholar, again focusing on management and leadership. Hannaford has been a library director at five different institutions, including the American Farm School in Thessaloniki, and has lived in Greece for a total of three years. His publications include a number of articles and three books. Hannaford has recently moved to New Mexico, where he plans to teach philosophy after completing his Fulbright work.

Susan Holler,manager of the Knowledge Navigation Center at the University of Michigan (UM)-Ann Arbor, has been awarded the University Librarian Recognition Award (which recognizes innovative early career achievements) and Jean Loup, librarian at UM, has been selected for the University Librarian Achievement Award (which recognizes exceptional distinction in career-long achievements).

Catherine A. Lee,library director at Wesleyan College has been selected as a Georgia Governor’s Teaching Fellow (GTF) for the 2003-2004 academic year. Lee will participate in the GTF Academic Year Symposia Program where she will attend a number of three-day symposia on the University of Georgia campus while engaging in instructional improvement projects at Wesleyan. Lee is the first librarian accepted in the GTF program.

Sarah Thomas,university librarian at Cornell University, began her one-year term as president of the Association of Research Libraries on October 16, 2003, during the ARL Fall Membership Meeting in Washington, D.C. She succeeds Fred M. Heath, vice provost and director of General Libraries at the University of Texas-Austin, who continues to serve on the ARL Executive Committee as past president. At the same meeting, Ann Wolpert, director of libraries, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was elected vice president/president elect. Three new Board members were also elected by the membership to serve three-year terms. They include Camila Alire, dean of Library Services, University of New Mexico; Marianne Gaunt, university librarian, Rutgers University; and Betsy Wilson, director of University Libraries, University of Washington.

Anne Turkos

Anne Turkos,university archivist and as- sociate curator of archives and manuscripts at the University of Maryland-College Park, was inducted into the University of Maryland’s M Club as an honorary member at the group’s annual dinner. The M Club, composed of all ath- letic letterwinners at the university, is one of the oldest such orga- nizations in the United States, having been founded in 1923. Turkos, a long-time ac- tive advocate for pre- serving and publicizing the University of Maryland’s athletic heritage, was inducted for fostering the strong linkage between the University Archives and sports throughout the history of the campus. The Archives contain a vast quantity of materials relating to athletics, including photographs and slides; media guides; game day programs; newsclippings; audio and videotape; film; game statistics; press releases; correspondence; minutes of the Athletic Council; ceremonial footballs; examples of uniforms over the years; and many other sports-related memorabilia items. Before coming to the University of Maryland in 1985, Turkos spent four years as a field archivist at the Baltimore City Archives and Records Center (BCARC).

Deaths

Caroline Coughlin,58, academic librarian and library educator, has died. Coughlin served as director of the Drew University Library in Madison, New Jersey (1985-94), where she also held the title of associate professor of bibliography and research. Prior to that appointment she was assistant director (1978-85). During her tenure she led projects to renovate and expand the Rose Memorial Library, automate the library catalog, and fund an Endow-A-Book program. Coughlin published a number of books and research papers in the areas of information resources management, library administration, personnel management, and issues in librarianship. She was co-editor of the official journal of the youth services division of the ALA (1974-77). In 1992 and 1997, she co-authored revisions of a standard text, Lyle’s Administration of the College Library. She was active in ALA, saving on its Council (1976-77 and 1979-80), as well as on numerous committees. Coughlin expressed a keen interest in supporting ALA’S Spectrum Initiative. Milton G. “Roy” Daniel,director of Brigham Young University’s Learning Resource Center, died June 24. Daniel began serving at the university library in 1979 as supervisor of the Learning Resource Center. In 1982 he became manager of the Learning Resources Division and earned his M.A. in Communications from BYU. He was also instrumental in managing personnel, equipment, and scheduling during the libraiy’s recent major expansion.

Chad John Flake,curator of Special Collections at Brigham Young University, died June 18 from leukemia. He came to BYU in 1955 after earning his M.A. degree in Library Science at Denver University. While at BYU he served as general reference librarian, documents librarian and helped acquire and preserve many rare books and manuscripts as curator. He became assistant professor in 1968 and associate professor in 1973. His award-winning work, Mormon Bibliography, 1830-1930, serves as an important reference guide.

Mary Jane Tacchi,61, coordinator of Young Adult Seivices at the New York Public Library (NYPL) since 1998, has died. She began her career within the NYPL Branch Libraries in 1966, first working as a reference librarian at the Wakefield Branc in the Bronx. Tacchi later became the supervising borough specialist responsible for oversight of young adult work in all Bronx branches. Using that broad experience, she went on to become assistant coordinator of Young Adult Services for the Branch Libraries, and subsequently, young adult coordinator. As a longtime member of ALA’s Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), Tacchi served on numerous committees, including, most recently, the Professional Development Planning Task Force and the YALSA Research Committee. She chaired the YALSA Selected Film and Videos for Young Adults Committee.

Egon Weiss,84, librarian emeritus of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, has died. He became assistant librarian at West Point in 1958, director in 1962, and retired in 1987. During his years at West Point, he oversaw the construction of a new library and introduced computerized technology to deliver integrated library services. During his tenure, the staff grew to more than 70 and he greatly expanded library services as well as the special collections on military history. ■
