College & Research Libraries News

In the News

This month’s issue features ACRL’s Annual Report for 2002-2003- In it you’ll find an overview of the many initiatives and member services implemented during our productive fiscal year. The roll-out of the Academic and Research Library @ your library campaign, the resounding success of ACRL’s 11th National Conference, and the launch of our first Web-based seminars are among the highlights of the report.

Recently, ACRL, ALA’s Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP), the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of American Law Libraries, the Medical Library Association, and the Special Libraries Association endorsed a new Statement on Fair Use and Electronic Reserves, in response to confusion about the TEACH Act and ongoing uncertainty regarding e-reserves and fair use. The e-reserves statement appears in its entirety in the Washington Hotline column, on page 756.

The role of the community college library is addressed in the Partnerships and Connections column on page 721. Bernard Fradkin talks about the opportunities and challenges presented during uncertain economic times to libraries with a mission to serve the greater community.

Each year, ACRL awards the Samuel Lazerow Fellowship for Research in Collections and Technical Services in Academic and Research Libraries. Reports on the research conducted by the 2002 and 2001 winners can be found in the News from the Field column, on pages 704 and 705.

To help you get started planning your schedule for the Midwinter Meeting, a list of ACRL events and meetings in San Diego is included in this issue on page 713.
