Ann-Christe Galloway

Richard W. Clement,special collections librarian at the University of Kansas, is the recipient of the Gretchen and Gene A. Budig Distinguished Librarian Award for 2003. Clement joined the university faculty as assistant special collections librarian in 1986. He was named special collections librarian in 2001 and was promoted to librarian III in 2002. He is an elected member of the Grolier Club (an international bibliophilic society) and is editor of ACRL’s RBM: A Journal of Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Cultural Heritage.

Victoria A. Horst,public services librarian at Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina, has returned to the United States after a one-year stint as library director at Iringa University College in Iringa, Tanzania.

Catherine A. Lee,library director at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, has been selected as a Georgia Governor’s Teaching Fellow (GTF) for the 2003-2004 academic year. Lee will participate in the GTF Academic Year Symposia Program, where she will attend a number of three-day symposia on the University of Georgia campus while also engaging in instructional improvement projects at Wesleyan. Participants in the GTF Program are selected based on their teaching experience, interest in continuing instructional and professional development, ability to have an impact on their own campus, and a strong commitment by their home institution for release time and other forms of support for the duration of their participation in the program. Lee is the first librarian accepted into the GTF program.

Appointments

Ewa Barczykhas been appointed interim director of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries, where she has served as associate director since 1998.

Patricia Denholmhas been appointed director of the Sidney Silverman Library at Bergen Community College. Denholm, who joined the Bergen Community College in 1999 as assistant director of the Sidney Silverman Library and served as interim director for the past year, brings to Bergen nearly 15 years of library experience. She served as the head of acquisitions at Essex County College Library and the records man- ager for the William T. Grant Foundation. She is a member of the ACRL Bylaws Committee, the Virtual Academic Library Environment Shared Information Literacy Committee, the New Jersey Library Association, and Beta Phi MU, Theta Chapter—the national library honor society.

Patricia Denholm

Hector Maymi-Sugrañeshas joined Shippensburg University as the new associate vice president of information technologies and services/dean of library and media services.

David J. Nuttyis now director of university libraries at the University of Southern Maine in Portland. Prior to this appointment, he was dean of library and technology services at Richmond American International University in London, associate university librarian for user services and technology at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and assistant university librarian for public services at Loyola University Chicago. He has been active in ACRL legislative issues and served as Chair of the Government Relations Committee.

Taylor Ruhlhas been named university li- brarian for the University of La Verne’s Wilson Library. Ruhl has spent nearly 30 years as an academic librarian, and the last four as di- rector of library and media services for the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) in Essex, Mary- land. Prior to his ten- ure at CCBC, Ruhl op- erated an information services consulting practice (1996-99) and was dean of university libraries at Regent Univer- sity in Virginia Beach, Virginia (1994-97).

Retirements

Marie Morris Nitschkehas retired after 35 years in the General Libraries of Emory University. Nitschke began working at Emory as documents librarian, moving on to reference and research services for most of her career. She specialized in Ameri- can History as a part of her collection management responsibilities.

John Schacht,reference librarian in Re- search and Information Services at the Uni- versity of Iowa Libraries, has retired.

Peter Watson-Boonehas retired from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), after 13 years of service as director of librar- ies. During Watson-Boone’s tenure, the UWM Libraries added 1.5 million items, a 43 per- cent increase in holdings; implemented a new online catalog; established a digitization unit; and inaugurated ser- vices, such as E-re- serve, document deliv- ery, electronic full-text, and digital spatial data. Watson-Boone led the planning for the Stage IV expansion of the Golda Meir Library building and substan- tially strengthened the Libraries’ Archives, Special Collections, and American Geographical Society Library (AGSL). In 1999, the libraries received a ma- jor funding commitment from the Univer- sity of Wisconsin System Administration to recatalog the AGSL’s vast collections. Watson-Boone has been active locally, re- gionally, and nationally in library organiza- tions, most recently serving on the Execu- tive Committee of ACRL’s University Librar- ies Section. A cofounder of two RASD sec- tions (CODES and MARS), he received ALA’s Isadore Gilbert Mudge Citation in 1991 for distinguished contributions to' reference librarianship. Watson-Boone was university librarian at Idaho State University from 1987 to 1990; before that, he held various library positions at California State University, Chico and UCLA. He served on the editorial boards of Reference Seivices Review, Behavioral and Social Sciences Librarian, Journal of Aca- demic Librarianship, and Journal of Access Services, and has authored over 75 publi- cations, including monographs, chapters, ar- ticles, technical reports, and book reviews.

Deaths

Gertrude “Trudy” Jacobson,83, who retired from Iowa State University in 1986 after serving many years in library instruction, has died. In 1983, Jacobson coauthored “Motivation via Videotape: Key to Undergraduate Library Instruction in the Research Library” in the Journal of Academic Librarianship. She also coauthored “Ninety Years of Library Instruction” in the 1981 ALA Yearbook.

Gerald Jahoda,77, professor emeritus of the Florida State University School of Information Studies, has died. Jahoda began his library career as the chemistry librarian at the University of Wisconsin and later directed the technical information centers at Colgate-Palmolive and the Esso Research and Engineering Company. In 1963, he joined the faculty at Florida State University. He dealt with a progressive failure of his vision by incorporating assistive technology into his own work environment and by becoming an advocate for blind and physically handicapped students and library patrons. He applied his research skills to developing new techniques for audible indexing, while continuing his work in improving information access to sighted scholars and students. He was a prolific author and active consultant.

ElizabethA. Windsor, 94, retired head of the reference department at Iowa State University Library, has died. She began her career at Iowa State in 1954 and retired in 1974.
