FEDLINK RFP

The Federal Library and Information Network (FEDLINK) has mounted an online request for proposal (RFP) for preservation services. This RFP is intended to help the staff members of federal government libraries and information centers identify and select appropriate vendors for preservation services that will be outsourced. It is divided into six sections, called lots, which specify the requirements for Conservation of Rare Books and Other Bound Rare library and Archival Materials (including protective enclosures), Conservation of Flat Paper and Other Unbound Rare Library and Archival Materials (including protective enclosures), Preservation Photocopying/Scanning of Books, Preservation Microfilming, Preservation Duplication of Photographs and Negatives, and Preservation Consultation and Training. Although developed in conformance with federal procurement procedures, these detailed specifications could be of use to any organization involved in outsourcing.

Binding workshops

The Greater Western Library Alliance, Heckman Bindery, Archival Products, the Association of Library Collections and Technical Services, and the University of Kansas Continuing Education are sponsoring a one-day workshop about library binding in two locations. The first workshop will be held on April 29, 2004, in Kansas City, Missouri, and the other will be held on May 13,2004, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Topics to be covered include processing materials, working productively with a library bindery, and the role of binding in a preservation program. Brian Baird of the University of Kansas, Lora Lennertz of the University of Arkansas, and Hilary Seo of Iowa State University are the instructors.

CCAHA workshops

The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) will again offer its three- part workshop series, “Disaster Mitigation for Cultural Collections,” April 19-21, 2004, in San Francisco. It will be cosponsored by the California Preservation Program. The first day Julie Page of University of California-San thego and Michael Smith of LaSalle University will cover “Assessing Vulnerability and Identifying Risks.” The second day Jack Watts of the Fire Safety Institute and Nicholas Artim of the Fire Safety Network will cover “Fire Safety, Detection and Suppression.” The third day, Monona Rossol of Arts, Crafts, and Theatre Safety, Inc. and Wilbur Faulk of Contemporary Services Corporation will cover “Understanding Health, Safety and Security Risks.”

Workshops cost $90 for one, $170 for two, or $240 for all three, and the registration deadline is April 5, 2004. School for Scanning

The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) will once again hold “School for Scanning: Building Good Digital Collections” in Chicago, June 2-4, 2004. This three-day conference provides the latest information about, and best practices for, converting paper-based collections into digital assets. Its primary authence is administrators and project managers, not technicians.
